TC Woe and despair -infamous severe stuttering bug returns...
.
.
Hello again
As I see I'm not the only one with this problem, and unfortunately no solution for now worked. There are few remedies that could ease the symptoms but only to a certain degree and only for certain time.
Interesting thing is that problem often shows up in vanilla, patched games, powerful and fully updated computers who show no issues whatsoever in any other games or programs.
I already posted here recently link. I addressed the problem then by rearranging my fleet and avoiding problematic sectors but that was obviously just postponing problems, not solving them. From then i reinstalled my pretty old but very resilient windows 7 installation, carefully rearranging my software and not letting anything get in a way of X3 TC. I did not install nero, ffdshow, or any other codec pack that could interfere with TC (I'm watching movies in that dreadful VLC /he has all the codecs embeded ;-) Then i reinstalled my game (Steam, had to download it all over again, wanted everything to be intact).
Nothing helped.
This guy here ("Stations causing (severe) stuttering" post, just several posts down) has exactly the same problem, as do several others which posts I bumped in earlier. In his post he claims that disabling the "glow" in game launcher solves problem, almost to full. Other guy says that disabling/renaming mov002 in game installation folder disables movies on big space screens and eliminates stuttering. I'm sorry guys, I believe you have just postponed your problems, I have particularly problematic save in the middle of antigone memorial where I'm building my secondary military production complex, with my 6-7 different TLs, huge complex and bunch of asteroids and nothing you proposed works there.
my save game link
Lets repeat the basics:
intel i5 /3.6 GHZ, 4 GB of ram and Radeon HD 4890. Fully patched game, completely updated Win 7, completely updated video and sound drivers. no suspicious codecs (list will be attached latter), pagefile enlarged and fixed in size as per recommendation.
Full list of symptoms:
-Occasional game hiccups/stutters, very low fps, game even unresponsive to any input on worst occasions.
-Some sectors prone to problems more then others (some-zero, some-unplayable).
-Sectors full of player stations, ships, fog or just TERRAN especially prone to issue.
-When stuttering begins its often encompanied by HUD blinking symptom. HUD vanishes and rebuilds itself constantly.
-Facing ship away into empty space reduces problems completely /until position held.
-When stuttering, textures on ships sometimes get very dark then return to normal. I tried to take screen capture but game was to clogged to respond to F9.
-On stuttering, music is sometimes played in loops /whole system is practicaly clogged.
-Pressing F2 and circling around ship in outside view multiplies stuttering by factor 10, up to Ctrl+alt+del as only solution. Good for testing purposes.
-One little thing, i have noticed that sometimes planet textures refuse to load, but am uncertain if this is connected to problem. picture is here:
(Argon Prime btw, Tommety noticed same thing - guy with the same problem)

Hi. You might get a few more fps or less stutters in busy sectors if you use the latest branded (RealTek etc) driver from your mobo manufacturer or the audio chipset manufacturer update sites for your onboard sound card and mobo/OS/cpu rather than use the default generic MicroSoft HD Audio driver you are using now. It will not fix everything but it might help a bit.
Another thing that might help you reduce in-game stutters is fixing your pagefile size to avoid in-game resizes, rewrites and maybe defrags. Set the pagefile both max and initial to the same value of something like 4 to 6 Gb given your amount of available RAM. (Your current max pagefile size if as shown in the DxDiag is decidedly over the top.)

.
.
i believed i adresed both issues.
first, i went to asus site and find a link for my sound chipset there. nfo file says:
file: ALC1200_Audio_V6015859_Windows7
DeviceDescr = Realtek High Definition Audio
VendorProductKey = Realtek
Version = 6.0.1.5859
installation went with no problems.
interesting, in my device manager for High definition Audio Device stands:
Driver provider: Microsoft
Version:6.1.7601.17514
Weird. I'll try to reinstall audio drivers but fact is that my game has same problems even with all possible sound devices disabeled in device manager. Checked.
As for pagefile i put same amount on both disks. Maybe is that what you see. here:
[ external image ]
EDIT: I've noticed that I have left disk C on "system manage". I've corrected it to "none"
Now I'm trying to remove my windows drivers , then installing asus/via one but windows revert their drivers each time on restart. trying to solve the issue....
Done. Looks like asus site pointed me to outdated driver (shame on you asus!) so windows would automatically rewrite newer version. I identified my sound chip (VIA VT1828S) and got drivers directly from VIA (ver. 87.00.30.100811). Needles to say, problem with game remained. I'm no expert but i believe that it's something graphic involved. I know Egosoft are quite busy on their new title, it would be shame to forget about X3 TC. That game has lot of fans and players all over the world.

I'm no expert but i believe that it's something graphic involved. I know Egosoft are quite busy on their new title, it would be shame to forget about X3 TC. That game has lot of fans and players all over the world.

Forceful retirement (?)

you know those cases of rare disease that few people in the world have, no one knows what causes it and it's completely uncureable? well i know hot they feel now : ) no not really like that but... you see, my game has rare and seemingly unresolveable technical difficulties and due sudden stutters and hiccups on several sectors had become completely unplayable. before you say reinstall game, windows, drivers, remove codecs, i did all that and more. i have powerful computer with newest drivers and everything by the book and still can't play. you could find my post in "technical support" here, if you encountered something similar or have something to add, any input will be appreciated (you could comment there not here, just to be on topic).
now since problem occurs in certain sectors with lot of my own stations and ships, i thought that starting anew with more oriented combat marauder style with just a few assets could actually be more playable. hell if i succeed in just few months of gaming i'll be happy. i love this game and maybe developers fix the issue in meantime (yea, right ;-) or something else arises.
i am sorry that i can't finish most of storylines and plots, get my rank higher, board more xenons (i have 17 5/5 marines dammit!) but what the hell, i'm happy to be able to play at all. this game offered me far more then those 20 bucks i payed for it and certainly has much more to offer, so no hard feeling on my side.
now i think this could be good time to add some mods, but am uncertain what to put. i will open new subject in modding forum here , your advices are welcome.
terraformer company thanks you on your time and attention. company just went bankrupt and now it's a new time, time for Ariel Brennan, wild and uncontrollable cousin of good known and respected family who ran away from home when she was 16, got picked up by some mercenaries, had some problems with law and now she is prowd owner of brand new mamba, ready to conquer the galaxy....

Well, I have not analyzed your reports, there are others far more knowledgable for that.
However, I too had your problems, though my pc is not as powerful as yours. I have solved my problems, for now at least by removing the annoying fog, removing the tubes on the complexs, and removing the annoying videos on the satelite billboards.
Have you tried these? If not it may be worth the try. Its not really a modified game, but in my opinion is improved.
Sorry if I am stating the obvious to you.

I've had problems with games and asus integrated audio before, so that's a good place to investigate. Years ago when I was playing Titan Quest, I was using a computer with integrated audio and an Asus board. For whatever reason, it was causing severe frame rate issues on a game that really did not have much 3D animation. Disabling the on-board audio completely fixed the frame rate issue, but of course games are not as fun if you can't enjoy the audio so I bought a cheap soundblaster audio card and that did the trick.
A little clarification on disabling the auido, do it at the BIOS level so the OS doesn't even try to load it.
For your case, you can just disable audio completely and see what that does to your gameplay issues. If that works, you can buy a cheap sound card.
The other part of your setup I was wondering about is your disk drives setup. It seems you have 2 Samsung 1 TB drives that are partitioned unusually. Can you talk about the setup a bit? It may just be the drivers using old names, but I see references to IDE controllers. I'll admit I didn't read the whole specs list in depth since there was so much, just focused on parts that seemed unusual to me. If you really are using IDE controllers instead of SATA or RAID, that would be a huge bottleneck on your system and could explain terrible framerate issues.

deca.death,
What's happening is when your the RAM required by the game reaches close to 2.5 GB, it starts swapping out assets. This causes massive issues with sectors that have a high number of unique models/textures.
You're running 32 bit Win7. You probably have a license for 64-bit, which you can download from Microsoft. Right now, your 32 bit OS is only using 2.35 GB of RAM.
Also throw another 2 GB in your system.
I almost guarantee this will solve your stuttering problems. I've ran symmetrical testing on 32 bit and 64 bit OS with the same save game combat scenario. 32 bit stuttered down to 4 seconds per frame until my ship looked away.
With 64 bit, which utilized all my RAM (6 GB) absolutely no stuttering, ever.
Edit: I should note, I've had capital ship battles with all five races, in excess of 300 ships without a single stutter in 64 bit Win7. My FPS is low, of course (8-10 fps), but it's not suffering from HUD blinking or temporary freezes. With Win 32 bit, the blink and stutter is a for sure thing with so many unique assets on render.

thanks for the effort, i actually did remove movies on my billboard but i believe my problems are not just classical low fps issue. i could live (and play) with low fps, this is something different and more serious. my game runs well and it's actually rock stable until factor "x" awakes. there is very specific problem that screws up everything and until i root it out i'm afraid that i won't be able to play.

i also was suspicious about sound, i've tried several driver combinations and removing /disabling sound in device manager. now i also disable integrated sound in bios and you probably can guess that it haven't helped. i believe we could rule out sound definitely.wathman00 wrote: I've had problems with games and asus integrated audio before, so that's a good place to investigate.

i believe both disks are sata. i dont think this is disk related problem.
thanx anyway.

Btw would that require installing into the 64bit Program files or would the game stay fine in the normal one?Litcube wrote:deca.death,

this explanation certainly seems plausible but....
why is the problem so rare then? this game is not that new. most of people still have 32bit OS and many people have worse PC then mine, not to mention 6 gigs of memory, which i believe is still quite rare. Few years ago when game was released situation was even worse, hardware/OS related. it's just hard to accept that this is OS/memory related issue. i don't say it's impossible i'm just asking why is that not generally known yet?

Hey!!!! that sounds like what my UFJD did. my game randomly crashes when i go into UFJD sectors.
By any chance do these sectors that glitch have megaplexes in them? IF so there your problem. Also, could you upload your save and i'll see if it works better on my machine. If i do that, i would appreciate knowing if what sectors are messed up

What makes you think the problem is rare?
On your current system, you can install 20 GB and still see no improvement, as your 32 bit OS can only access a maximum of 2.5ish GB of RAM.
Worse PC, less than 6GB of ram; none of this makes a difference. The issue is the game engines poor ability to cope with paging when it runs out of RAM.
Regardless, this is the solution to your problem. You can keep searching, if you'd like, but nothing else will fix the core issue you're experiencing. You're assertion that this is not an FPS issue is correct. It is not a sound issue, a driver issue, or codec issue.

kotrone, i don't believe case is similar to your UFJD problem. in the link i posted up you will find my post in support and there will be link to my savegame, right in the middle of problematic sector. this one (antigone) has megaplex in it but two others where problem occurred do not. they were argon prime and omicron lyrae, btw they were my main ship bases in the time, which is certainly no accident.

well fist, you were only guy know the answer (i wish you are right). no one in support didn't heard of these (very specific) symptoms before, and just a handful of guys ever mentioned this AFAIK. now i'm reading google results, seem that stuttering problem is not new in x3, nevertheless check this one out link, guy with 64bit OS, 6Gigs of ram and exactly the same problem.Litcube wrote:

well i will reconsider this certainly, it's just...i've just spend last two days reinstalling and fine tunning my win7 installation. if i do all again, even buy more memory and still not solve the problem .. i will shoot myself in leg. :)Litcube wrote: Regardless, this is the solution to your problem. "im stil having problems with fps and jerky movements ingame!"
This doesn't sound to me like the RAM issue.
