Stations causing (severe) stuttering

Post by Tommety »

Alright, so I've been trying to tackle this one for some time now, not much is left to turn off anymore and it's starting to get frustrating.

I see a lot of stuttering/lag topics here, but I haven't seen one with the same 'symptoms' as I have.

So, from what I've observed over the past months or so is this:
Most of the game works like a charm, occasional stutter when large/many ships enter/leave a zone, but that's ok.

My slideshow starts in rather specific sectors, Argon Sector M148 and pretty much any Terran sector with their extremofile stations, the Terran sectors are the worst.

Aside from the slideshow I also noticed the familiar HUD blinking symptom. It vanishes and rebuilds itself constantly.

So far I've come to the point where I no longer even have explosions show up, downgraded all the effects from photon cannon and the like.
Even asteroids that are blown up no longer show that animation they do.

But the severe stuttering remains, in fact it makes the game unplayable.
Setting the swapfile to the max did seem to help a little in the amount of time it takes to reach the end point.
Using gamebooster actually made everything worse.

With all the graphical tweaking I've done to the game I'm starting to think it's not at all something with graphics.

So, how does the stuttering start, I'll describe how it starts when in sector M148, since I frequent that the most with the Final Fury storyline.

It starts off nice, you notice a stutter when turning and crossing paths with what I strongly feel is that military base/outpost stations.
It's just a slight stutter at first and I'm not too picky about that.

As time progresses so does the severity of the stuttering. To the point where I have to ctrl/alt/del the game because nothing else responds anymore.

Of course, this was unbearable when the Kha'ak attacked the sector.

I reset the swapfile yesterday to its basic setting, this did make it a lot worse, just so you know. So I will set it back to the max I can make it (I'll admit, I don't know what the swapfile is really), but it's not a solution it's a temp fix as I pointed out.

For the Terran sectors it doesn't really seem to matter what I do, there it is almost immediately the final stage slideshow, unless I load the game when in that sector.

To point out, I use advanced jumpdrive to jump to those sectors when I truly notice it, in those sectors I notice I jump way off center meaning I see all stations at once. But when loading the game I only need to pass 3 gates or so for the same result. Hence, it's become a habit to avoid those sectors unless absolutely necessary.

Last detail that makes me believe it has a lot to do with the stations.
The stuttering almost vanishes completely if I can get my ship to face away from any station and ditch my current target if I have one.

Regarding drivers:
I am using the most recent vid card driver.
Onboard sound card, doesn't seem to actually have new drivers from what I managed to find.
Onboard sound card is: C-media CM6501 Like Sound device.

Used to have both HAALI and FFDshow, removed at least HAALI, not too sure about FFDshow since I had it before installing the K-lite codecs.
It didn't solve this problem.

I did install 3.1, but both the plugin manager and my savegames state it's still 3.0 (strange...)

So; if someone has managed to solve a similar problem, please enlighten me, because while I can play most of the game, it's the storylines that are difficult to complete with this. And I like my storylines.

Now, here's the mandatory DXdiag:

Hello Tommety. Your issue could be a mix of several different things so I would advise trying a few different adjustments.

First if you have the wrong version number with a vanilla install then you have a game installation or patching issue. I suggest that whatever your DVD version, you download and then run Patch 1.01-3.0 and then immediately the same for 3.0-3.1 as that will replace all non-core game files and so hopefully make any necessary game repairs. You may/will lose all the edits you made to the vanilla gamefiles though - I don't know if you would see that as good or bad.

Second we know that pagefile (the use of a reserved part of your hard drive just as if it were system RAM even though access is slower than for actual RAM) has some effect. For TC at least I suggest that you set pagefile both intial and max values to the same 4.5 Gb. That should cut down on in-game pagefile resizes and rewrites.

Next, unless you really want to keep them, I would get rid of the Nero applications as their codecs are damaging to TC gameplay. If just uninstalling the application or codec pack (like k-lite) that installed them does not clear them, you can download and run (as admin) a tool called Codec Sniper to get rid of them.

Just as test, go into Control Panel, Device Manager, Audio/Sound devices and right click on your sound device. Disable it and so stop its old driver from running. Now start TC and see if that is better than with the sound enabled. That will confirm or eliminate problems due to your sound driver and we can work on the results of that. If you reboot, the OS will try to reload your sound driver and maybe even load a default MicroSoft driver if you prevent it loading the C-Media one - you could even try the default one to see how well that performs as your C-Media one is very old and is not designed or approved for Win7.

Lastly, just as a check, run the latest MicroSoft DirectX 9.0c Runtime Web Installer. That will check and maybe update all the 9.0c files that TC uses under Win7 DirectX 11 control.

If using Game Booster made things worse then I suspect that either you let it delete too many key services or that you have another system issue, but we can look at that later if you want.

Let us know how you get on with these and I hope you have good luck.

There's an SPK1 for Win7, update your sound driver, and disable/remove the Nero codecs.

Regarding the SPK1, will do.
The sound card driver, well on the net I can't seem to find an actual driver update. But perhaps my search skill is lacking.

And how would I remove these NERO codecs?

And thanks.

EDIT:
Scratch the Nero codecs question.
I noticed a NERO 7 essentials in my software list, I reckon that removing that solves the codec issue?

My sincerest apologies Alan,

I must have overlooked your reply (with a DXdiag post I tend to get scroll-happy) in my original reply.

I will most certainly look into your sound suggestion first.
I do think I know what (in part) made the 3.1 patch go weird though.
I recall that it, amongst other things I'm sure, adds a 14.cat

I'll save the X3TC reïnstall option for last, since I have the suspicion that it would render my saves unusable. The original 3.0->3.1 update ruined a mod I had placed under 14.cat and resetting that .cat made my save at that time go bad.

The HAALI codecs are gone I don't find anything of when searching for it, as are the NERO essentials.

The swapfile has made things better again, so at least that's confirmed as a working aspect, I'm just hoping to find a permanent solution.

Also, I am now certain that the largest culprit is the military outpost station.
I've visited several other sectors next to Argon M148 and those zones immediately start causing a stutter when my ship is looking in the direction of their Military Outpost. Again, it's not as bad as jumping into a Terran sector, but it was very noticeable.

So, I will start on that sound card advice of yours and check back here to report whether or not it has eradicated the problem, made it more manageable or did nothing at all for my problem.

I will also see if the soundcard advice happens to fix another issue of mine:
Where I seem to have background music only in the Terran Sectors (the irony) and some specific non-terran sectors, I believe I can count those on one hand.

In any case, thank you very much for your time as well Alan.
And again, sorry for overlooking your initial reply.

And if the only thing that seems to lessen the problem is the swapfile/RAM size, I guess I have found a reason to boost my computer again by getting Win 7-64bit and a ton of RAM memory and perhaps an SSD disc, which I think might tackle the bottleneck issue of the 'standard' harddisc. And all that just for X3 :D

EDIT:
Regarding the swap/pagefile, I seem unable to set it any higher 4095 MB, which to my knowledge is only 4GB. Yet here I see everyone using 4.5 GB as rule of thumb. Any reason why mine is limited by 0.5GB?

No problem and I hope it helps.

By the way, Vanilla 3.1 only adds cat/dat 13. Other mods/false patches will previously have been adding 13 or above when used with TC patch 3.0. (For example mod XTC 1.1 designed for use with TC 3.0 adds cat/dat 13, 14 and 15.)

Edit on Pagefile: You can normally force the max pagefile size as far as your drive has space and to suit your OS mappable addresses, although 1.5 x RAM fitted is a general guide to max size. You may be being advised not to go above about 4 Gb as with a 32 bit OS it cannot map over 4 Gb RAM. Further, some of your RAM is already mapped to your graphics card as video RAM, hence you could not load even a full-RAM size swapfile back. If you look at your posted DxDiag you will see that your previous pagefile available was set above the 4 Gb limit in any case.

Well, the sound card advice did seem to improve framerates in SETA, which maybe lacked 1 FPS at 1000% anyway, it didn't do anything for the station stuttering.

It did seem to disable the startup movies (deepsilver/egosoft) as well.
It didn't attempt to load a different driver when rebooting though, if I wanted to skip the C-media one it just remained driverless.

What I did do this time was shut down the target window.
It didn't fix it, but lessened it a little bit, which I guess is because that way there's no camera looking at the station/into the sector.

Okay I've noticed something new.

I needed a new transporter device (I could use a cheat to get it of course)
and from all the zones I've discovered I could only buy one from the Research station in Saturn.

So I jumped there and of course could only ctrl/alt/del the game.

But I did notice something (because I jumped facing toward it).
The planet's surface had not loaded. You saw the white shape of the planet, but it didn't have its normal surface.

It also seems that in Terran sectors it doesn't matter which way I'm facing, it's just impossible to do anything (except force closing the game).

Thinking back, I've had this before in other zones with a planet and it did make that zone a lot choppier than usual, but it was not nearly as impossible as in the Terran Sectors.

I'm currently trying to get a save game made in there, so I can see if reloading the save game makes the surface load (and subsequently lessen the slideshow effect).
But so far I spent 15 minutes waiting for the side bar to come up (which didn't happen).

If this rings a bell with someone, meaning you know what causes this new aspect, please enlighten me.

My alternative route is jumping in various Terran Sectors, one with a planet and a zone like Kuiper Belt that doesn't have a planetary surface.
If those planetless zones are playable like that, next step would be to figure out what causes the lack of surface loading in those zones like saturn.

Also, I've gone through the hassle of making my game 3.1 compatible again. It hasn't had a noticeable effect as of yet on my problem.

EDIT:

Alright, so. Jumping into Kuiper Belt was not a problem at all.
This was what I sort of expected, since it only has one station.
From there I jumped to Saturn. This time it did have its rings and planetary surface loaded.

The game still locked up, excep this time, if I faced away from the stations, I VERY SUDDENLY, snapped out of the slideshow. Meaning from 1FPM to normal FPS. Moving up, at the exact same rotation level, it immediately went down to FPM again. The swithcing takes less than a second.
All I did was pitch up/down for this, speed was 0 at all times.
The planet was also in view the whole time.

So I took my time to get my nose back into facing the 'normal' part of the zone. Then I made a save, shut down and reloaded the save and the locking up was gone.

So...all in all I'm beginning to think that jumping into a zone does something to the loading of zones. At least loading a save game in the zone itself does something much better for my performance there.

Also, I did all of this straight after loading a save game, so not first playing for an hour or so and then moving into Terran sectors.

This all sounds very like a common game issue (the sector entry and random slowdown bug) that was fixed in a subsequent patch. I wonder therefore if your patch coverage is actually incomplete or corrupted. Now that you have got your game more or less to 3.1 but still with issues, I strongly suggest that you do what I advised earlier and install patch 1.01-3.0 and then 3.0-3.1. That will not affect any mods or false patches that install (or should be installed) as cat/dat 14 and above.

I will do that then. As it does seem like the last resort now.
Just to be sure I understand correctly. I don't have to uninstall the game first, just run the two patches (1.01->3.0 first then the 3.1 patch)?

EDIT:
Well, I ran the patches.
It has helped a little bit, but for any decent experience in the Terran Sectors I need to make a save, shut the game down and then restart the game again in order for it to be (reasonably) stutter free.

Stutter also still remains in the sectors with a Military Outpost, but that was M148, which has two of 'm.

Did some random experiments, such as making a 360 degree turn. Moving causes most of the stuttering.
I also targeted a large station in the Terran sectors and spun around that one.

In both cases (but mostly in the ship turning) the stuttering lessened to some extent after spending some time spinning around.

Also, once again the stuttering was mostly linked with the planetary surface not loading properly. I was mistaken the first time though.
I thought Saturn wasn't loading, but apparantly the zone has a second planet. Which didn't load on the jumping in.

In any case jumping into the Terran sector rather than going through the individual accelarators seems the worst thing to do, so I guess I should just let go of the jumping into terran sectors for now.

I know this because when I loaded the game in Saturn the planet surface had loaded, I jumped to Argon Prime and back and the surface was gone again, and the stuttering came back again.

It might help if you posted an updated dxdiag report, showing all the changes you've made.

Also, to really get to the bottom of this, you need to have a vanilla installation of the game. Modified games all too often turn out to be the problem, and so in order to eliminate that as a possibility, we require tech issues to be reproducible in a totally unmodified game. So either uninstall and reinstall TC, or create a new installation in a different folder. And yes, this is both legal and possible.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Hey, I have the exact same problem as you. But it is with a fresh install of windows 7, and a updated version of the game. I hope egosoft pull there heads in and fix this problem, it seems that a lot of people have the same problem.

All my stuttering issues clears right up if I rename 00002.dat to something else.

1) Go to the X3TC game folder and open the mov folder
2) Rename 00002 to something else like 00002_bak

The above will remove videos from the billboards that you see in sectors, and for me, it helps a ton with the stuttering. It also eliminates the constant harddrive activity while playing the game.

If you use Steam, make sure to disable auto update for X3TC otherwise the file will just be downloaded again and you'll be back at square one.

Well, I have found the cause of my problem and fixed (most of) it.

I came in contact with the X-games through X3 Reunion, I have played that for a while and through that I built the habit to launch the game through the Plugin Manager.

I had tinkered with many settings for the game, except for one thing apparently. The 'Enable Glow' option in the graphics menu when 'properly' opening the X3 game.

I turned that off, and I immediately noticed that the Terran Sectors were working just fine since then. Graphics wise I don't notice a difference, but it sure helped my issue.

Simply unchecking a graphics option...who would have guessed....
