[TC] performance issues and some other glitches

First, I have pretty powerful machine and these are not type of problems that I used to. Few informations that may prove useful:

In the beginning I had no problems whatsoever. Then CTD begun to appear more and more frequently. I've read some of the FAQs and disabled my FFWD codecs. No problems with stability I had afterwards, the game is rock stable and I had no CTD in weeks.

Now I don't know if these things are in some way connected but after that I slowly begun to notice performance problems. Game would just hiccup occasionally and went to very low fps count every several seconds - some times even to unplayable levels. Those problems are not constant, they appear randomly, sometime game runs for few hours with no problems and then in some sectors things slow down significantly, then I get several faster frames then again almost freeze then again several frames then again freeze and same further. Only connection I was able to point out is that "foggy" sectors like OL are much more prone to described problems and that battles with more ships and weapons and weapon flashes do the same.

Another type of problem is that my ingame menus occasionally disappear for second or two and then return like nothing happened. Again, this doesn't happen all the time, game runs normally for few hours then in a short time menus disappear /and return (usually when I'm docked in station, managing fleet or buying /selling) in 20 seconds like 5-6 times.

Just to mention that my comp is intel i5 /3.6 GHZ, 4 GB of ram and Radeon HD 4890. Fully patched game and same for Win 7. Newest drivers for GPU and no problems in any other game or program whatsoever. CPU is cool and stable.

Two things to do and two to try.

1. Get rid of the Haali codecs by uninstalling any application or codec pack that loaded them (eg k-lite). If they persist then download Codec Sniper and 'run as admin' to delete the Haali codecs that are left.

2. See if there is a newer VIA HD audio driver issued later than and specifically for final Win7 release.

3. Try without the USB sound device plugged in, and maybe with it disabled in Device Manager.

4. Try fixing your pagefile/swapfile both initial and max size to 6 Gb then reboot. Your pauses sound like dynamic pagefile resize/rewrite/defrag issues. TC is not a good manager of dynamic pagefile and keeps asking for just a little bit more in-game. Fixing it may reduce the interruptions. It is easy to put back to OS-managed if you don't get any improvement.

Now making page files on both disks on recommended sizes seem to get the game "breathe" easier, I would say.

But strangely enough, removing my K-lite codec pack caused two CTDs already. That's strange, isn't it? Two CTD's in one mission, in exactly same time. I'm not sure what to do next, gonna try reinstall k-lite and disable ffwd again. BTW I had no haali codecs and this is my list of current codecs, without K-lite. If you see anything suspicious here, tell me what to kill.

I have the exact same problem as you. Fps drop down at certain spots, Game freezes, HUD and side menu dissapear. Sounds like the same problem.

It was really bad until I updated to the lastest version of the game now it is playable. I imagine you have already donw this.

I have a better processor than you but you have a better graphics card than me. I have intel 980x and EVGA GTX 295.

Now reinstalling my k-lite codec pack helped with stability - no more CTD. I disabled Haali codecs from the beginning and later disabled ffwd as shown in FAQ. Game seems to run smoother because increased pagefile.

Again, in most of systems no problems with framerate, but when I'm in omicron lyrae, exactly below the EqD, where couple of my M7 are stationed and when i circle from left to right I always seem to get a glitch /hiccup when EqD comes into view, either north or south side. When i turn my nose down no problems anymore. Also sometimes it seemed like I'm loosing textures on my ships from outside view, slowdowns were critical there. It happened two times already, restart of game helps. It seems like a sort of graphical problem. I'll try removing my drivers then reinstalling.

Getting (different) CTDs with and without k-lite means that your problem is indeed codec-related or to do with codec priority. If you CTD only without k-lite then it means that something is trying to use a k-lite codec while playing TC - which is inherently wrong as TC actually wants the MS WMA codecs. CTDs will give an error message that will say what the faulting module was - that info would help here as it might pinpoint what application was calling the k-lite codecs.

By the way, removing/disabling your USB headphones & driver was meant as a temporary diagnostic measure and not advising permanent removal. The other diagnostic measure is to keep the headphones but temporarily disable the VIA chipset and driver in Device Manager to see what effect that has with TC (if any).

Hello guys, finally had some time to address the problem
an update:

cleaned up video drivers, reinstalled them
remove k-lite completely
test game with most of video settings and options changed for testing
disabled first, then second audio device (played with other)


All this yield no results whatsoever, even was unable to recreate
CTD problem, game is perfectly stable, runs well except in foggy
sectors beneath large structures like EqD, heavily populated with
(my) ships.

All symptoms are mentioned already, menu occasional dissapearence,
game hiccups with almost to freeze moments when complex structures come into view and ship texutures gone dark and game slowed competely.
These are very specific symptoms.

I don't plan to reinstall my system yet, thus for now I see no alternative but to rearrange my ships to clear sectors (reducing their number in OL seem to reduce the problem noticebly), bit crude but for now effective solution.

Do you still have the error messages/problem history reports from when the CTDs happened with no k-lite? I ask because even though you are no longer having CTDs, it may be that something is still calling for k-lite codecs in-game and so wasting cpu cycles while it cannot find them and has to divert to another (hopefully correct MS WMA) codec.

It may tell us what was doing any incorrect codec calling and may still be even now. Mind you if it just says x3tc.exe then we are no further forward. Although the observed symptoms are graphical, the underlying cause could still be lack of cpu effort due to wasted cycles.

30 minutes of technical discussion followed by: It depends on how you use your PC. If you do not run a lot of concurrent applications you can set your swapfile to 0.

The more cautious will suggest 1.5 times your installed RAM.

You can span the swap across drives or place it on one. Probably good to move it off the boot drive. Tell windows to make the min and max 1 and 1/2 times the amount of installed RAM on a (fast) drive other than C.
