I think the escort script just bugs out after 10 minutes or so.
Had a quick look at it and the other AI scripts that are supposed to take
care of your fleet and it's so riddled with stuff flagged as 'to do' it's hardly surprising nothing works as intended. Still, why bother making sure at least the player can enjoy his capital assets right? Incredible!
Meanwhile I have modded myself triple the amount of enemy capital ships escorted by actual fighter wings (as opposed to just 1 or 2 fighters popping up which don't stand a chance against anything) and it already helps a lot enjoying the game.
Good news is the Xenon Branch9 destroyer actually DOES shoot.
It just takes EONS for it to shoot at you.
It engages enemy AI just fine.
On a sidenote: Ordered my Galactica to escort me and it took off with full afterburner into Xenon-Space

Guess it must have had a bad day in space too.
