Many Moons have passed since last I asked.........
Can someone give an update and expected release of the Scripting Documentation.
I think I've been fair in waiting till Feb had well and truely been over before asking....seeing as it'll be April on Thursday I think enough time has passed.
An update every 2nd week would have been nice.....I'm tired of people in the know not sharing information with us.

I can catagorically announce that a decision on whether or not they will think about answering your question will definately be made sometime in the near future.....or not

Oh now chaps...this is a bit churlish. What about the splendidly detailed docs released about three weeks ago. I'll summarise for those who missed them.
1) Game has scripts.
2) Here's how you access them
3) Dont try and be too clever !
4) What do you mean this document has virtually no substance.
5) And what it does have was posted on a sticky in this forum 3 months ago !
6) So long suckers.
I'ts the one area i'm REALLY dissapointed with, haven't had the game on my hard drive since mid January, can't be bothered with the plot (sic!!), and scripting was in my top three reasons for wanting X2. Damn damn and damn again.

Hmmm......I have a feeling the script documents are being held back for release with the X2 Expansion pack (which costs money) why else will no one let us know whats happening with them....of course I'd love to be proved wrong on this....then again I probably will be and the docs won't be in the expansion pack either.

What exactly do you want documented? Aside from basic instructions like how to create a new script or how to run scripts, there's really not much to document. Everything else you need to know is basic programming knowledge that should be second nature to you if you've ever written a program in any language.
And even if you haven't, a little tinkering can go a long way with such a simple system of scripting.

I want the whole hog...I want to know what each command does and how it's implemented...I'm not a programmer ... never was.Redjack wrote:What exactly do you want documented? Were you trying to be a smart arse by posting in this thread???
If you can program and understand every command in the script editor then please feel free to write a tutorial for those who don't understand it.

It's a lot simpler than it looks, and I'm sure you could figure it out if you just gave it a shot instead of waiting for documentation that's not going to come. If not, then I don't think scripting is the thing for you.
There's a reason Egosoft hasn't released better documentation. No, it's not because they hate their customers.
Out of the several games I've scripted for, the only official documentation released on scripting for those games were basic command reference lists.
Why? Because it's assumed that anyone who wants to get into scripting will know what loops and variables are.
X2 is not any different, and I'm sure Egosoft doesn't have time to write a basic programming guide that contains the same info that you can find on thousands of internet sites.

I have programming knowledge, and understand loops, variables and arrays very well. Fact is, The Script Editor is a custom programming language with some unusual commands - what exactly these commands do, and the syntax data should be fed to them is unclear without a command guide.
I don't need a tutorial on variables, I need to know what is acceptable to put into the CREATE FLYING WARE command, for eg. Now unless CREATE FLYING WARE is a common command in programming languages (Which I know it's not) then your point is moot.

Did you read my post above? If not then I say it again....I want to know what each command in the script editor does.Redjack wrote:It's a lot simpler than it looks, and I'm sure you could figure it out if you just gave it a shot instead of waiting for documentation that's not going to come. I don't want to know how EASY you or other programmers find it....I'm looking for something that was PROMISED to the customers...get it yet???
If you persist in argueing that it's so EASY to script then please create the command list explanations for me...if not then please don't comment on it's ease of use in my thread anymore...thankyou.

Hey Arg, I agree with you.
There are just some commands there that don't make any sense to me and my limited programing knowledge.
Some commands I've given the balck box treatment and worked out what they do, but we're missing a lot of information about the commands, and the way the universe works in general. Understanding the scignificance of sector objects or the ware type codes for instance
In the unofficial Scripting Handbook at Xai Corp, I now have a complete list of the commands and am working on commenting each with what they do and how to use them. I need help with this though.
