How to remove the "MODIFIED" tag

Post by Storm_Front »

I have successfully removed the "MODIFIED" tag from my modified galaxy. Here's how:
I unpacked the cat/dats just like in 1.2 to set up for modding.I loaded my previous modded galaxy map into the maps folder and started a new game in my modded galaxy. There was the modified tag staring me in the face. I decided that had to go.
I unpacked the 04 dat file into a spare folder and started going through the new files. In the v folder, the 10443.pbd file looked very suspicious. It was titled "watermark". I promptly deleted it from the x-2 the threat/v folder. Then re-started the same modified galaxy map. The absense of that garbage was simply beautiful.
They say you don't realize how much you value something until it gone. When that piece of sh*t is gone and I still don't see the value of it. :D

I have not done any extensive testing of this. I thought it was of the utmost importance to get this information out as soon as possible.

keep us informed!

I would think that if it was going to complain about that file being absent, it would have done so already - but if that does happen, then I'm sure a totally transparent image could be created

I thought that might make your day.

JustHere4Coffee,
I agree, I expected it to crash on start-up, but everything seemed ok.

Excellent snooping Storm_Front....Ahhhh :)

[singing]
I can see clearly now the modified text is gone
I can see all modifieds in my way
Gone are the bugs and mods that made me crash
It's going to be a bright, bright sunshiny day

I think I can fly now the text has gone
And all of the modi and fieds have disappeared
Here's the fix that I've been praying for
It's gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day

Look all around there's nothing but Nebuli
Look straight ahead nothing but Nebuli

I think I can fly the ship now the annoyance has gone
And all of the modifieds have disappeared
I can fly again now the mod has gone
It's gonna be a bright, bright
Sunshiny day
[/singing]

Could anyone put up a link to a thread that explains how to unpack all that stuff? I'm not really finding it anywhere. :|

Thanks in advance. :)

Thanks for the fix!

I just hope they don't have some kind of code embedded that will hose you later in the game because that has been changed. It's not like they haven't done that type of thing already with the no-cd cracks etc.

I doubt it, since I doubt Ego actually expected this outcry against it (Funny how listening to your Beta Testers sometimes actually makes sense!), and thus never considered people going to efforts to remove it.

I'll be very curious to see what's going to happen for 1.4. If they're going to be petty, and the patcher will refuse to patch if that dumbass file isn't in its proper spot. Nice check of character that.

All you need to do in that situation is reload the 1.3 and it'll replace the missing file....then whip it back out again after update.

I know, I actually have a copy of the file ready to be put back if needed. I'm just saying it will be interesting to see what will happen regarding that.

I don't think the guys at Ego are that petty, to be honest, I'm hoping that they'll just realise that this wasn't the smartest thing to do, and come up with an unobtrusive way for this same info to be relayed in 1.4, and not bug those of us who've removed their file.

But, who knows. I've seen very reasonable devs go totally bonkers because you said that their decisions were stupid, so...

Modified universe versus original game
Starting from version 1.3 X2 has two modes of running. It can be started either in
modified or unmodified mode. An unmodified game is one which uses only the files
distributed by egosoft without any self written scripts, modified types or universe data.
A modified universe game can be started "modified" from the start (e.g by using game
mods) or a normal "real" game can be turned into a modified one (e.g if you activate
the script editor and import unsigned scripts.
You may ask why this procedure is necessary?
The reason for the difference between unmodified games and modified games is that
many people want to play X2 for an incredible long time. Part of the motivation for
playing a game such a long time would be lost once they know that it is very easy to
cheat. But in a modified universe, it is unfortunately very easy to cheat yourself
everything. So with this approach we want to give you the best of both worlds. On the
one hand you can create your own games and manipulate every aspect of X2, but on
the other hand people playing an unmodified X2 can still tell the difference and can
enjoy the cozy feeling that they are spending their time earning real X2 credits ;)
LOL they do have a nice point though ........... oh well

Nobody has ever really questioned their POINT. Just their method of implementing it. :)

That whole quote is flawed....My game is modified and all I run is the Official MKIII trader, 3.5 Station Acountant(all this does is transfer money from your factories to your account and vise vera) and the SEWS Datalink(Satellite Early warning system which scans for khaak intrusions and sends a message to you...needs to be bought and then it's 2000 for each sat hooked to it) in no way are these enabling me to get "Easy X2 Credits" so even though my game is classed as modified it's not really modified and as such everything I have earned in game is as valid as anyone who has an Unmodified game.

Amen.

Btw, why do people keep saying you need to BUY the ASEWS script? It just runs?
In my opinion, anything to help you be a LITTLE LESS annoyed by the Gnat Invasion that is the Khaak is fair game. :)

The ASEWS looks to be an older version of SEWS Datalink which needs to be bought and it's then 2000cr for each satellite hooked to it....The satellites should have worked this way from day one or as soon as deployed but wasn't...don't know why that was missed.
