Please? Very few of us can afford a commercial package like 3D-Max, so it feels rather discriminatory to only be able to use that to import models into X².
Would it be possible to have plugins for other 3D programs such as Blender, Truespace and Cinema4D? Or is this down to technical issues that are only resolved using Max?

(Some of us are quite poor )
It would be useful if importing models wasn't confined to a 'a million squid program' format
I'd much rather regret the things I've done, than regret those I haven't.

*tries to figure out the conversion process*
Heh I don't know anyone that owns Max!
I'll throw my vote in for other formats - that's something nearly every dev overlooks; most modders can't afford 3ds! Heck it was all I could do to buy Cinema4D (and then BodyPaint)! But most mod tools are just copies of what the devs use, and many many devs use 3ds max
Hey devs any chance of an external ship utility - something that can import .obj or something and put a ship together?
At the moment I am in the process of obtaining 3dmax.

Here is the trial version, unfortunatly v6, you need to give an email address and then use the link sent in the mail.
I have made enquiries for a cheap version for non comercial use.
But not necessarily a student version.
When I get numbers and info I will post the result.
Well if your a student, and you can prove it. Then it costs about 100€ which is very little.
If your a developer like me then you have to register with them in Canada aparently, sign something in your own blood probably, and then you get release`s of everything according to the german helpdesk. Hopefully for a yearly subscription of not too much.. hope fully...
I know nothing about 3D modelling...but I do know there are loads of programs that you can 3D model with...I'm throwing my vote with the guys for support for programs other than 3dsmax.....and only because I saw how much that program is...fooken ell nora
I dont know 100€ / 100$ for a student version is very good I think, and to be able to use one of best the tools on the market saves you time and effort.
Unfotunatly its not so easy to get the old version that they are using though. At the moment V6 is the current version..
I'm a max user and there is a free version available called GMAX. I know it can accept regular MAX and VIZ plugins but the plugins are version dependent and I don't know what version GMAX is up to.
You could probably download GMAX from the discreet website or the Autodesk website.

I downloaded that last week actually - haven't got around to installing it yet tho.... I'll give it a whirl and see if the plugin works on it (or an Egopeep could give us the nod), but I would much rather use Cinema4D.

GMAX is *not* a free version of 3ds MAX, it's a modelling app that shares some of 3ds' features but it is locked down hard, and discreet charges like $50K to the developers to allow them to make plugins for it.
