Massive memory thrashing problem...

Post by alex2069 »

My game plays beautifully in most sectors... Most...
Argon Prime:
I can NOT jump into this sector WITHOUT having the >3gb switch enabled.

Omicron Lyrae + Eighteen Billion + others that I can't remember - most of them core systems - not all the core systems:
These systems I can only jump to if; I have the >3gb switch enabled, AND I'm actually using a MINIMUM of 3gb. <- wtf, lol

If I am using less than 3gb, whatever the current usage is, it will ALWAYS drop like a rock down to ~1.5gb, increase to ~1.7gb, then drop again, etc, rinse an repeat (see pics below).

This has been happening since the 1.2.1 patch (I have the 1.3 patch now). I'm unsure if it was in-effect in earlier patches as during that time my game was much "younger" and I never had any problems. <- If I start a new game, I CAN enter any and all systems.
Also, I do have a couple of scripts/mods installed, but I've ruled them out through the process of elimination, as well as looping through the problem sector I was testing, and dumping all ship info, task usage, etc. trying to figure out what scripts if any were being stupid.
This process was later resolved by me realising that I wasn't using the >3gb switch anymore since the 1.3 patch updated the exe. After I re-enabled the switch, I could jump into Argon Prime again, but as per above, still no-go with the other sectors.

With all of the problem sectors, it doesn't matter how I enter the sector (Jump Drive, Gate, or "put into environment"), the problem is the same.
If, however, I destroy a chunk of the ships (grab the ship array of the sector, destroy say 30% of them), I can enter any and all systems (even without the >3gb switch) with no problems.

Also, when I say I can't enter the sectors, I mean, I can, but it's just impossible to do anything; MASSIVELY jumpy, no HUD, etc. To get out you do Shift+J, you have to hold it down for a couple of seconds before you can hear the "beep" sound of the jump screen opening, at which point you can see the sector map, but no actual UI with it. If I hold down left or right or whatever to change sector, same thing. Press (and hold) enter, it'll eventually enter the sector. Press (and hold) enter again, it'll eventually say "Jump Drive charging" or whatever it says. Then for the next 2 mins, Betty will try ever so hard to count to 100%, lol.
(10%->20%->30%->10%->20%->30%->40%->20%->10%->50%, etc).
Eventually I'll jump out and the game will return to normal.

Some pics of my problems:
This first image shows what happens if I jump out of a problem sector. The first half of the graph just goes up and down ~200mb. Guess when I finally jumped out of the sector? lol
[ external image ]

This is me jumping into Eighteen Billion, then jumping out again. Can you guess which period is me in Eighteen Billion? :P
[ external image ]

This time I jumped to another sector first (the memory usage peaks at about 2.2gb), then jumped back to a problem sector.
[ external image ]

Me still in a problem sector (guess when I alt-tabbed :p). At which point I tried to restore, but it had a fit and I had to kill the process.
[ external image ]

This is me avoiding the problem (mostly core) sectors, picking up a patrol mission (which btw are WAY to easy now; you really go to the extremes don't you Egosoft? lol).
Guess when ships were spawning. :P
Incase you don't get it, it's those spikes in IO and a slight bit of thrashing; why, when I have plenty of free ram at that point, I don't know.
[ external image ]

Still the same patrol mission. Was nice and smooth after it got over the load bits. Almost at the 3gb; I'll be able to visit Omicron Lyrae soon!
[ external image ]

I netted a nice 6million credits (was NOT "Very Hard", but bleh), and I can finally jump in to start the Exterminator mission (been meaning to for a while; figured the 1.3 would've balanced it a bit).
[ external image ]

Guess when I entered Omicron Lyrae? lol
Also, why it does a massive drop in memory usage is beyond me, as I still had free RAM (~5%), and if at this point I jump to ANY other (non-problem) sector, the memory usage will continue to rise (it usually peaks at about 3.6-3.7). It's only these problem sectors that cause a massive drop in memory. I'm assuming it has something to do with the sheer number of ships/objects (given that by destroying a chunk of them allows me entry without waiting for 3gb+).
[ external image ]

So that ends my adventure, my story of how I enter Omicron Lyrae, lol.

Oh, and finally, my DxDiag: (updated again)

I doubted it'd be related to those, however I figured I might as well update them anyways on the off chance it did help, but to no avail. I've update the DxDiag as well.
It looks more like a bug rather than things not playing nice; most noticably due to the IO thrashing; the game is stuck in some sort of cache/memory loop; ~65mb constant IO is not normal, what is it trying to read in? Half my computer? lol

X3TC doesn't like the ffdshow codecs, so if you have it installed (on its own or as part of a codec pack) you need to either uninstall it, or exclude X3TC from the programs that use it.

If you haven't already ?

I'm still wondering about AC3 !

Edit :
The game does everything in its power to select the correct codecs to play back sounds, but certain badly-behaved codecs can still interfere. The most common culprits are ffdshow, Nero and Ulead. For ffdshow see

If you haven't already ?

I'm still wondering about AC3 !

Edit :
The game does everything in its power to select the correct codecs to play back sounds, but certain badly-behaved codecs can still interfere. The most common culprits are ffdshow, Nero and Ulead. For ffdshow see
Same linky as above
For FFDShow: That has been disabled since the first run of X3TC (it asked if wanted to use it; I selected no - I've had problems with other games from this). However I did go into the options and confirmed it for both the audio and video, and it is definitely disabled.

As for the Nero stuff: Woops, lol.
I forgot I reinstalled Nero (uninstalled it for X3R as well). However the problem continues. :(
Strange thing though, after Nero had finished uninstalling, it asked for a restart (I said no), started up X3TC and jumped to Omicron Lyrae, and it worked fine... I think...
I alt-f4ed out, and figured I'd better reboot to make sure. However it's still a no-go. I'm thinking I might've jumped to the wrong sector (hit 'o' too few or too many times and wasn't watching?). So I dunno, I might've imagined it, lol.
My DxDiag has been updated... I might try removing some of those other codecs and stuff.

Well, I found my problem!
Using Process Explorer I checked all the loaded libraries X3TC was using, and most of them were from MS, EGOSOFT, or from files within the X3TC directory...
Except for one!
RealMediaSplitter.ax <- BAD
I've never liked Real Media, lol

After removing this, I can jump and go anywhere I want!
Yay!

So there ya go mods, there's another one to add to the list of things X3TC doesn't like.

Also, I think my game is actually running smoother, lol.
Aldrin isn't anywhere near as jumpy as it used to be.

Edit: That actually might be another nice way to help people find their performance issues. Selecting X3TC in Process Explorer and hitting Ctrl+A lets you save its loaded libraries list.
I wouldn't be surprised in the least if there were other strange codecs on other peoples machines destroying the beauty that is X3TC. :P

Edit Again: Ahhhhhh for **** sake!
It's screwing up again damn it.
Why does it work sometimes and others not. Tried a reboot, but now I can't jump back in at all. Gah.

Another trick I've seen CBJ suggest a few times is to reinstall WMP 10 or 11 when you've done some messing with your codecs - helps ensure the list is clean. Worth a try.

I can't. :(
The latest version of WMP for download is 11.0.5721.5146. I have version 11.0.6001.7000 so it refuses to repair/install.
And no, you can't uninstall WMP from Vista... At all, lol.
Searched over Google for a good 10min trying to figure out how, but everywhere I looked said it's not possible.

However I'm pretty certain it is not a codec related issue. I found a nice little program and disabled ALL codecs, lol.
It was still using the ffdshow.ax, but only as VFW so it shouldn't have an effect on it, but using this program it disabled this as well (it was no longer being loaded/wasn't in the DLL and Handles listing), but still no good - I also confirmed this wasn't effecting it by renaming the file so it couldn't be loaded.

During my anger at it playing up again, I walked away to get food, came back 5 min later and... It was working, lol.

I have no idea why, but it eventually fixed itself:

Of course once I tried to jump to another sector it screwed up again... That sector being Argon Prime now... Gah. x.x

Edit: Ok, well, I'm stumped.
I did a restart (again), first thing I did was load up X3TC, and jump straight into Omicron Lyrae and... It works perfectly...
I quit out, try again... Doesn't work anymore. Gah.
So I quit out (again), start it up, jump in, and lo and behold, it works perfectly.
So this is starting to really piss me off, lol
I figured maybe it was something running in the background, so I close every application, shut down every single non-essential program. Start up X3TC, jump to Omicron Lyrae, and yay! It works.
Close it down, start it back up (again again again!), jump in, and bah. Doesn't work.
So I try AGAIN, close down X3TC, start it back up, jump in, and what do you know it damn well works, lol.
So I try closing down and starting it over and over. At first it looked like it was working every second time, but that was soon ruled out; it's completely damn random!! Sometimes it'll work, sometimes it wont.
Anyone have any other suggestions? x.x

See what happens if you rename the file mov\00002.dat to something else such as _00002.dat.

EDIT: An other suggestion is to try a different graphics card with less memory. Perhaps the large amount of memory is not being handled efficiently.
Come watch me on Twitch where I occasionally play several of the X games

I tried doing the rename thingy, but it's no good.
At first it looked like it had helped, but I think if it did anything, it might've decrease the number of times it would occur, or it almost looks like it occurs later in the system - I'll jump in, it'll work fine for 5-10 seconds, but then it'll just start going all stupid again.

As for the alternate gfx card... I'll have to rip it out of my other comp (probably do it later tonight).

I tried doing a fresh install (another directory), and created a new game, opened up the script editor and jumped myself to Omicron Lyrae... It was bad and jumpy... x.x
So apparently a new game and a script/mod free install also has the problem. However what was weird is that if I closed it down and tried again, out of all the times I tried (many, lol), only twice did it screw up again. After that, it would work perfectly.
However, if I then went and played my original installation, it would be as normal (either work or not, stupid thing), but then go back to the fresh install, it would screw up once, then work perfectly there-after.
This happens almost almost every time, so is there anything that the game sets/saves as it quits that could possibly affect the clean installation? But then once the clean installation quits, it'll work fine until I run the "dirty" one (or so it appears).

Not that Im saying it must be this but your description of your massive lag when entering a sector happened to me in X3:R + Xtended with one of the stations getting destroyed and being respawned in the same place over and over and over and over.. GPU couldnt handle the number of polys I guess..

It's definitely not that as destroying a large chunk of the ships before jumping in allows me to avoid the problem.

I put in my old GF 6600 GT, updated its drivers, but no good either.
Tried it 5 times for good measure, lol.
First time it screwed up as soon as I jumped in (like "normal").
Second, third and fourth times I was able to jump in, but after flying around for a min it would start screwing up (see pics)
Fifth time just screwed up as soon as I jumped in like normal. x.x

After which I promptly put my 9800 GTX back in. Wow, I'd forgotten how shit that old thing was, lol.

So, any other suggestions from anyone? x.x

Is this vista 64 or vista 32? As you obviously shouldn't get more than 3 gigs of memory usage under vista 32 with the 3gb boot switch (and that switch doesn't exist and isn't necessary with vista 64)

My theory is it's not related to the number of ships, but to the variety of them, but there's other things at work here - I had no problems in OL just on 2 gigs, let alone more.

Any chance you could screenshot what your threads tab looks like? And (I'm away from my computer so I don't know the correct name) the part of process explorer that shows what DLLs a program has loaded? My working theory is that something on some systems but not others is stealing process memory

EDIT: Have you got an example of a save where jumping to a sector will cause the memory yo-yo-ing you can send me? Preferably one that isn't using any scripts. I'd like to compare and contrast on my system.
