Of course it does. That's what the interface was designed for. I have no problem with that at all, and i'm sure it works great on an Xbox. The thing that annoys PC users is that they didn't change it one iota for a PC where the interface does NOT work very well because you have a completely different control system. On there is it rubbish. Fortunately there are a lot of talented modders out there who are hard at work fixing it and slowly but surely transforming it into the interface the underlying game deserves.KloHunt3r wrote:Eh... This probably isn't going to be received well on these forums:
I played Skyrim on my cousin's Xbox and I found the UI that ships with the game actually works very well with a controller.

No kidding. You can't even pick things up and put them back down again with the same keys. (I've eaten many a beetle leg and moth wing meant for potion-making because the inventory keys keep swapping around.)RegisterMe wrote:I found inventory management, particularly when you add a companion into the mix, a complete ball ache.
Oh, and as an added bonus if you redefine the action keys to something that makes sense all the inventory management keys become mislabeled.
Great job, guys!
And let's not forget the way the highlighter inches its way upward as you manage inventory until it finally moves completely off the top of the screen, or the way the selector skips up one item when you put a stacked item into a container that doesn't have any of that item already in it.

UI doesn't stress me too bad (yes I'm on PC).
I can see the appeal of sorting but to me having too much stuff (regardless of if you can sort it) is more of a headache than the interface.
As for followers, they just get the bare minimum they need: 1 x Melee, 1 x Ranged and the 4 components for armour and 2 jewellry. then maybe only add health potions (in my runs followers never use anyother potions bar health).
I tend not to give them lots of weapons to switch around, only thing they do get is heavy stuff to carry for me
and my PC's tend to have a clean out of potions/ingredients etc everytime I get home, I even cull arrows.
and if it's not a potion, magical or valuable I don't grab it as loot, so all those non-ebony/daedric weapons/armor get left behind.

Patch 1.4 out for PC, seems to be just a general round of bug fixes and preparation for steamworks & the CK (which by the sounds of it is being finished off for release within the next week or so). Console update is generally a week after the PC one if memory serves.

Has anyone found any engaging questioned beyond the main quest, dragon one, dark brotherhood and thieves guild?
I'm trying to find something beyond "retrieve item A" from dungeon C to get payment of.... Not a lot considering I just killed a million bad guys for you.
If I can't find something really tangible to start doing I'm going to break this game like I did with Fallout 3
I'm already free running across the rooftops in Solitude, attracting wild animals into small towns and just causing general caos wherever I can without getting bounties put on my head

Mage's Guild (College).
I wanted better dialog options against that moron who accuses you of breaking his "magic-finding machine" though.
I wanted to tell that idiot, "'The Eye of Magnus' is the most powerful artifact anyone alive today has ever seen. If your super divining rod of uber-magic-finding didn't point to the one thing in the universe it darn well ought to point to then you could accuse me of sabotage. As I'm the one who actually found the Eye of Magnus and switched it on you should be thanking me for giving you an object with which you may calibrate your machine. If it pointed anywhere other than the College of Winterhold I would stay right here and hold your hand until you got the machine working properly, because if it's not pointing at the Eye of Magnus it is darn well not working properly!"
I so wanted to give that idiot a piece of my mind ... Brylena looked ready to kill the moron, but she kind of looks that way all the time, so maybe she wasn't as pissed off as I was. Still, sometimes I can tell ...

Well some of the daedric quests can be quite interesting.... (sounds like you've already done at least one...)

Wow! I've already started nearly all of those! They all looked like boring fetch, kill, steal quests so I ignored them or went off and did my own thing halfway through.
I'll definitely be revisiting those quests.
I purely want some decent adventuring. All the loot from dungeons and quests is sad next to my Daedric armour and weapons, 110 damage sword whereas a "special" loot with a name and abilities only does 20 damage and maybe 10 points of magic or something. Balance fail :/
Does anyone else desire the ability to fight from horseback?
Maybe some big horse back battles?

Hooray for the 1.4 patch
my Mage character had a ctd bug where I couldn't travel the distance between Whiterun and the Honningbrew meadery without a ctd, and the palaces were ctd aswell....
my other 3 characters had no probs but the mage was a no-go.
Now I went from Whiterun to Blackreach, onto the icy wastes and back to the collage before running to just before Ivarikstead (sp.) before having to quit the game... yay!
(she's a no fast-travel pc game, all on foot for her, plus only by day, rest at night and eats regular meals)

I've been doing the no fast travel thing, which I'm liking a lot. Unfortunately, my food is more along the lines of nothing for three weeks, then 68 tomatoes, 28 grilled leeks, 11 wheels of cheese, 21 salmon steaks, 15 bottles of wine, 6 bottles of ale and 12 sweet rolls to finish. Not bad for fifteen secondsSnowship wrote:(she's a no fast-travel pc game, all on foot for her, plus only by day, rest at night and eats regular meals)

Please forgive me for my cardinal sins, such as not reading the 92 page thread before making comments and asking question that have probably been covered a dozen times before...
I bought Skyrim over Christmas because it was on offer, but I've only very recently finally found time to install it and give it a go. I have to say that the first 10 minutes were one of the worst first impressions I've ever had of a game.
The most jarring thing of all was that game made no concessions whatsoever to a PC gamer who isn't familiar with using a console controller. It took me a while to even work out that "LS" and "RT" were supposed to be control names, and even once I'd had that little epiphany I still couldn't find all of them. Indeed I still don't know what "LS" is. And what if I hadn't had a controller? It wasn't mentioned in the system requirements that I would need it. Surely a PC game should at the very least present the keyboard controls in-game during the "tutorial" phase, shouldn't it?
A secondary annoyance was there was no way to adjust the volume short of Alt-Tabbing out of the game, and the when I did that I was left with a blank, black screen when I went back in. As a result I had no idea what was going on in the cart, because the volume happened to be on low when I started the game. In the end I had to restart from scratch. It took me several attempts just to get past all this to the character selection screen, and then it was back to the control frustration, trying to work out what buttons to press to make it do something useful.
So, my first question is, is there any way, realistically, to play this game using keyboard and/or mouse? I've been trying to get used to the controller, but struggling to establish any logical relationship between the various sticks and buttons and their functions, and now I am reluctant to even bother going back into the game unless I can play it without the damn thing. I did find a keyboard layout for the game somewhere, but when I tried mashing the keyboard in-game early on I found that none of the keys appeared to do anything useful at all. I'm left questioning whether this is because I've done something wrong, whether the layout I found was simply inaccurate, or whether I need to set some settings of some kind to make it work. Do I need to unplug the controller for the keyboard to be usable? Or was I just unlucky, experimenting with the keyboard at a time in the introductory part of the game when most of the functions were not yet enabled?
Another thing that's bugging me is motion sickness. This isn't the game's fault, but I had the same problem trying to play the Half-Life series, and the only solution I found then that allowed me to play for more than a few minutes at a time was to play in a brightly-lit room rather than one that is dark apart from the screen. This isn't ideal as it severely limits when I can play the game. Does anyone else get motion sickness from first-person games, and have they found any other ways to solve, or at least reduce, it?

I don't remember being prompted with game pad controls during the tutorial...CBJ wrote:It took me a while to even work out that "LS" and "RT" were supposed to be control names...
All of Bethesda's recent games are horrible at alt-tabbing. But "double tapping" (alt-tab, then alt-tab again) seems to get me past this issue with Skyrim.A secondary annoyance was there was no way to adjust the volume short of Alt-Tabbing out of the game, and the when I did that I was left with a blank, black screen when I went back in.

This might be it. For the first 5 or so minutes of the game your hands are bound. Someone has to untie you before you can really do anything. How far did you go?Or was I just unlucky, experimenting with the keyboard at a time in the introductory part of the game when most of the functions were not yet enabled?
I don't, so I can't really help you there.Another thing that's bugging me is motion sickness.
But let me get this straight: you have motion sickness, yet decide to make a living developing video games that revolve entirely around space flight?

Oddly enough, space games and flight simulators don't give me motion sickness; only first-person games, and even then not all of them. The worst so far have been Half-Life, Far Cry 2 and now Skyrim. I don't remember having any problem with Oblivion, and the Mount & Blade games don't give me any trouble at all, whether on foot or horseback.

I have similar problems – Interestingly, only in Minecraft and Elder Scrolls games so far, not in other games. Not sure where the difference comes from, but I was never able to solve/reduce it.CBJ wrote:Does anyone else get motion sickness from first-person games, and have they found any other ways to solve, or at least reduce, it?

It's okay, I was just busting chops.
Anyways, yeah, the opening of the game is a little unwieldy. But don't pass judgement on the game until you're given free reign and start exploring the world.
On the motion sickness, once you have full control try switching to third person view.
