Framerate Issues of Epic Proportions

Hello there, first of all the required information.

I can't produce a DxDiag right now however i'll post one up in about an hour, the reason i'm writing this now and not waiting till i'm home is simply because i don't have the time when i get home, i will however have time to post my dxdiag and i will. For now however i don't think they will be much use but my basic specifications are:

Q6600 clocked at 2.7Ghz.
4GB DDR2 Ram, only 3GB recognised though as i'm running Vista 32bit.
ATI Radeon 4750

I'm running game version 1.2 English and i'm not running any scripts of my knowledge, the game in question is the Argon start, however i had similar problems when i first played, that was a Terran start. I restarted believing the problem was caused due to playing in the Terran Sectors, however unfortunatly this isn't the case, it happens in many sectors. If it's worth noting i have followed the ffdshow disabling topic and disabled it for TC, which gave a small improvement, not big enough unfortunatly to make the game playable in certain sectors. Also i'm running my game at 1650*1050 on high settings with 2x on both AA and AF.

Basically what i'm getting are incredibly large framerate issues in a large number of sectors, and subtle framerate issues/momentatry pausing in every other sector. Luckily i'm not the biggest FPS freak like alot of people so most of the time i'll happily put up with it, but there's many times where it's just unplayable, and considering i think i have a better than average PC, i can't quite understand the issue. I've had the game for about 5 days now and i've been mentally noting where it occurs and certain other things which may be of help, although i'm sure you've heard most of them before.

The main cause i have found so far for issues regarding the framerate is the bright stars you see in the background of space and the colourful space clouds you see emmitting light. In most scenarios i've found if the star/space clouds is emmitting alot of light my computer will craw, and i really mean craw, something like 1 frame every 10 seconds, it's unbearable. I'm pretty certain it's the stars/space clouds or more importantly i think the light there emmiting in these situations causing the problem because if i turn this ship away from them so there not in view the framerate jumps right back up to a solid framerate. This doesn't occur in sectors which have smaller and not so bright stars however, only the brighter ones.

Another issue i've found which is a bit inconsistent in it's occurance but does happen fairly often is that sometimes it appears that the texture for the land on a planet doesn't render straight away, instead theres just a murky brown colour for the land mass. Whilst this is the case the framerate drops down below a frame a second. However as with the previous issue, if i wait long enough to be able to turn away, the framerate jumps straight back up. Furthermore one time when this problem had occured, i was in Menalanious Frontier or the sector to the right of it at the time, after about 10 minutes the texture of the planet suddenly popped in and the games framerate shot up to flawless.

During the Terran save i had i was doing the mission after the one where you follow the pirate to his base, anyway i was flying through Saturn i think and a Xenon capital ship decided to show up and as soon as it did my framerate was completely floored, in this situation i could do nothing but quit the game :(

Other smaller framerate issues i've noticed are with Asteriods and some Terran stations, but these in most cases can be put up with. Furthermore i've marker Kingdoms End and Elena's Fortune as no go sectors as the game is all but unplayable in there for me. Argon Sector M148 has caused me alot of problems with framerate however it's very inconsist as when i first went there it was fine, well asides from one military base being hostile to me, it didn't attack me or anything though *shrugs*

Also i've noticed that sometimes Alt Tabbing out of the game and back in can temporarily relieve the framerate issues, it's a handy technique i've had to use to get out of slowdowns before. One thing though which i can't stress to you enough is how inconsistant the graphical slow downs are, i've tried to list anything consistent i've noticed throughout gameplay, however these slowdowns are still very random, with a few exceptions which appear to always happen.

Anyway thats my piece, once again i'm really sorry i haven't included my DxDiag it'll be the first thing i do when i get home in about an hour. I thought i would just write up my experiences for you too look over, i hope theres something of use to you in there but i imagine you know most of this already, hopefully when i post up my DxDiag there will be something you can reccommend to me to improve the performance of the game, i absolutely love the game, it's such a shame about these problems.

- there's a later Realtek HD Audio driver at their site - make sure you get the right version..

is that Catalyst vers 8.10, that you're using for the ATi card, 'cos that's the latest one available at AMD/ATi's site..??

don't know if it would make a difference, but did you run the DirectX Installer that came with the disk..??

- note to mods and devbods, how crucial is this, by the way...??

- also try removing the XBOX360 headset thingy..
- the whole universe is running in BETA mode - we're working on it.. beep..!! :D :thumb_up:

Hey thanks for your reply, i will download the latest realtek drivers as you say next opportunity i get and report back the results.

As for the catalyst drivers, i have the latest graphics display driver as i updated for this game, however i think the control panel isn't the latest version, i don't know if this matters though.

I think the xbox 360 headset thing is in reference to me using my xbox 360 control in X. How do i remove it just unplug it? I've found i prefer flying with the mouse anyway so this isn't a problem :)

Also on a side note would it be worth me trying to over clock my processor a little more? Say to 3Ghz, would that give a noticeable improvement? I haven't done it sooner because i'm not really sure about how to overvolt safely.

can't advise on the Oc'ing - dangerous stuff

- might hail a passing boffin, If we're lucky.. :D

- can't readily say if the CCC console will make much difference
- mine's an AGP version of the 3850, which is a whole different game..

- there was something about fan controls in the write-up, IIRC
- dunno whether that would affect anything, though..

- what settings are you running X3:TC at, via the game's GUI at start-up?
- the whole universe is running in BETA mode - we're working on it.. beep..!! :D :thumb_up:

I've heard of complaints regarding the ATI CCC, seems to be a better/lighter version available from a third-party. I personally feel that processor speed is what will ultimately make TC run faster, so do some Googling to find overclocking resources for your processor.

Hi mystic,

You have ffdshow and nero codecs installed. While not necessary the source of your problem these arn't really compatible with X3TC. See this regarding ffdshow. You should uninstall the Nero codecs though.

Other common solutions for stuttering:
-Set your textures to medium. It doesn't really matter whether your computer can run the Large Hadron Collider, some people just get weird stuttering on High.
-Go to your x3/mov/ directory and find the file 00002.dat. Rename it to anything. This file contains the billboard movies, which load from time to time and can cause stuttering.

Thanks for the advice guys, i'll try implement some of them later tonight.

I'm running on high settings with 2x AA and AF, however last night i knocked textures to medium and the game appears to be playable in most circumstances, although theres still noticable slow downs. I'll keep it like this for now, however i don't think i should have to lower the settings with the hardware i've got, which makes me wonder if theres something else causing the problem, i'll certainly look into overclocking though, maybe i can achieve 3.2 on my chip, the extra half a Ghz will probably do wonders.

Sandalpocalypse - I did say in the OP that i had excluded ffdshow already, however that post was rather long so i imagine it was easy to miss, however i'll look into the Nero codecs, i do use them quite a bit though i think so this wouldn't be an ideal solution, however i'll do it and if the performance increase is noticable i'll keep it :) thanks for the tip!

Thanks for your help guys, i was also hoping someone part of egosoft could say something regarding this issue if theres anything to say :)

have you tried turning down your screen resalution down by a good amount for the game?

i did that along with reducing the field of view to about 70%.
i believe the field of view is under the "graphics" setting
i also disabled in-game music and reduced texters to medium.

i went from about 7 frames per second to about 30 in most sectors with these changes.

if any one is interested, my current system is....
intel P4 @ 3.0ghz
2 gigs of ram
geforce 7800 gs w/256 megs
