Well let's see. In their basic form here's a list of new things/ changes-

-Many, many new weapon types, both missiles and guns.
-A new Race, the Terrans.
-About 50 new sectors.
-getting on for 100 new types of ship including 6 completely new classes (Frigate- M7/ Missile Frigate- M7M/ Military Transport- TM/ Advanced Interceptor- M4+ / Military Corvette M6M/ Bomber- M8 )
-An ingame encyclopedia that provides useful info on ships and equipment as you discover them.
-5(soon to be 6) new storylines (each about 7 missions long)
-Many new types of mission
-A new and much improved interface (although it may take a little getting used to if you're a fan of the current interface)
-You can now buy and train marines and use them to capture capital ships.

Fundamentally it's the same game, but it does play quite a bit different this time around. There's quite an emphasis on missions this time and they are by far away the best way of making money. They also earn you race rep FAST. All of which means that if you concentrate on missions the game plays a LOT faster then the previous x games with money coming much more quickly. A good thing because you'll need it.

As for the 'plots' unlike the previous X games completing each one get's you something you couldn't normally get, such as access to unique and powerful ships, special one off items of equipment and powerful stations with some extremely useful (and on one case universe changing) abilities.

In a nutshell then, It's X3R with a different story and lot's and lot's more to do.

Pros:
  • Much better mission-receiving system. instead of wandering the universe, docking, scanning BBS messages and occasionally finding one that interests you, you go into a sector, scan the stations for one offering a mission-type (Fight, Trade, Build or Think) you want and then com that station to get the details.
  • Much wider range of missions
  • Generally better-balanced missions
  • Four mini-plots
  • No ring-race or corridor-race missions
  • Much tighter user interface, with very good use of mouse control. The optional Cursor Steering mode (which resembles Freelancer's) is very nice, and keyboard and joystick control are also improved. The menu system finally includes context-sensitive menus!
  • Much expanded range of ships, and a lot of new sectors. The missile frigates (M7M class) are a joy to use!
Cons:
  • Bonus pack scripts need porting
  • Brand-new set of bugs (though many have been fixed)
  • Generally requires a beefier PC to run at its best, and a few high-end PCs perform badly. Most people are fine with it, so it is worth getting now, and waiting for a patch if you have problems.
  • Some veterans find the changes hard to get used to and for them some of the pros are cons.

Biggest difference for me was that the emphasis has shifted from dogfighting to flying larger ships. The M3+ carried all in R but it gets blasted far more often in TC. M7 is the new 'smallest ship you can get away with'.

TC is much faster, you get cash quickly and spend it quickly. Which has good and bad points. Easy to get a huge empire but also easier to get to that aimless "Maybe time to restart" point.

It might be quicker to list the similarities rather than the differences.

From a tactical perspective at least, the two are as different as chalk and cheese.

One of the few things that has put me off TC is no Khaak start.

I am really enjoying the Khaak in X3:R.

Well, they do have plans to port the XTM mod over to TC but we'll have to wait and see if it gets completed and whether they add to it or start a different mod.

I never actually played XTM, but bare in mind the XTM team worked on X3TC and some (or maybe a lot?) of the extras were inspired by XTM...

As has been said - X3TC makes it easier to get bigger ships (faster cash and race reps, plus boarding), makes you more likely to need them (some nastier weapons and also more pirate/Xenon cap ships buzzing around) and also makes it easier to control fleets (wing commands and auto resupply).

However much I liked X3R, I much prefer X3TC :D

Thats a shame its moved towards capital ship based game play.

Still the long struggle to get money was always one of my favorout factors of X2 and I feel its missing from X3:R.

On the other hand, a lot of stuff is expensive. M7Ms alone are 50m+. And marines eat cash like food.

Yeah, but cash is very easy to come by, so long as you do the right missions...
