What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
The 25th anniversary year for the X series is rapidly approaching its end, and it’s been a few months since 7.10, our last major update for X4: Foundations, launched in August. Those familiar with our development journey will already know that this apparently quiet period actually means that behind the scenes we’re working hard on future developments. At such times we’ve always tended to be a bit more cautious in our public communication, to avoid setting expectations that may turn out to be unrealistic. Our highly iterative development process, and the shifting plans that lie behind it, often mean that we can’t predict exactly what will happen and when.
However, we’re now at a point where we believe that we can comfortably share a picture of what lies ahead for X4 in 2025. So, today we’re excited to present a general roadmap, which will provide an insight into our direction and give you an idea of what you can look forward to. Please keep in mind, though, that some of the details of this roadmap may still evolve – so consider this our current vision rather than a finalised plan!
First quarter 2025 – Flight Model Update
Our next major free update for the base game will feature a significant change that’s been in the pipeline for a long time: a complete overhaul of the flight model. Over the past few years, we’ve been working towards making flying in the X4 universe smoother, more realistic, and more natural. This latest update involves substantial changes to ship control and flight pathing, and has required extensive mathematical expertise to execute.
To facilitate this, we’ve partnered with John Pritchett, a former Senior Physics Programmer on the Star Citizen development team, to lead the transformation of X4’s flight model. We’re delighted to be able to incorporate John’s contributions, and we look forward to hearing your feedback once you’ve experienced it first hand. It’s definitely something you’ll need to feel in-game rather than see in screenshots or videos, so stay tuned for a Public Beta (soon™).
As part of these flight model changes, we’re also adjusting the balancing of every ship in X4 to make the most of these improvements. This task involves revisiting engines, thrusters, and other ship components, with our team running extensive iterations to prepare a balanced experience.
Beyond the flight model changes, we’re also adding several new clusters to the game as part of this update, creating additional connections to the Terran and Boron areas of space that were added in their respective expansions, X4: Cradle of Humanity and X4: Kingdom End. These new connections will be paired with some adjustments to the in-game economy – we’ll be giving more details on that once the Public Beta has started.
On the graphical front, this update will introduce yet more significant enhancements to our graphics engine, including DLSS and FSR 3 implementation.
We’re looking forward to launching the Public Beta for this transformative update as soon as possible. However, as you can imagine, these “game-changing” features require a little more time in the internal and private testing phases, so follow our Steam updates or our other communication channels (see Linktree to stay informed).
First quarter 2025 – “Mini DLC 1” (working title)
Alongside the free updates to the base game, we’re planning a smaller-than-usual DLC release early next year. While content specifics are still in the works, this “Mini DLC” will be more compact than previous X4 expansions. A confirmed feature is the re-imagining of a fan-favourite ship from earlier X series games; one which has been eagerly requested by members of the community. The DLC will also feature some activities surrounding the acquisition of this ship, and maybe even its blueprints. Stay tuned, as we may reveal the ship as a Christmas surprise this year!
Third quarter 2025 – Diplomacy Update
Later in 2025, we are planning a free base game update that will focus on Diplomacy gameplay in X4: Foundations. This update will introduce a new room in the player’s headquarters, where faction representatives can gather and offer you strategic options. In addition to this room, players will have access to agents (NPCs) who can be dispatched on independent missions to achieve diplomatic goals in the X universe. The highlight of this update will be Diplomatic Events, giving players the opportunity to manipulate their own relations with other factions, and even in some cases between specific NPC factions. We’ll have more to share regarding further features of the Diplomacy Update as we get closer to its release.
Third quarter 2025 – Additional Mini DLC
Depending on the success of the first Mini DLC, we may follow up with similarly sized DLCs to accompany other free base game updates. As you can see, our focus in 2025 is on consistent, impactful improvements to the base game and, as in the past, those base game updates will be free to existing X4 players, with Mini DLC purchases supporting ongoing development.
2026 – Exploration Update
In early 2026, we aim to release another major update, this time with the focus on Exploration. This update will introduce new anomalies that guide players to unexplored sectors of the X universe, each with unique and exciting discoveries. As development progresses, we’ll refine the details around this overall theme, such as improvements to Long-Range Scanner gameplay, and a range of missions for discovering these anomalies. Although this feature is still fairly early in its development cycle, Exploration will definitely be an essential part of X4’s future vision. We welcome your thoughts on this theme!
2026 – Another Major Update, Too Early To Really Talk About!
Looking further ahead, most likely in the latter part of 2026, we have plans for yet another major update marking another milestone in the game’s development. While we’re keeping details very much under wraps for now, we can assure you that exciting additions and premieres are planned for the series.
We hope this roadmap gives you a clearer, though admittedly still somewhat vague, vision of what’s in store for X4 in the coming year. We can’t wait to kick off the Public Beta for the next update, so be sure to stay connected to our communication channels. If you’re new, then check out our Linktree for a comprehensive overview of our news and community resources.

Hype for the Hyperion! I think no other ship gets more requested than this one.
I'd actually say that for me the Springblossom tops the Hyperion as my personal favorite, but there is no Springblossom without Aldrin, and no Aldrin without a proper expansion adding them and their entire shipset as a faction. If we're talking about a single ship, that leaves the Hyperion as the only viable choice, which is fine.
Oh, and I hope that Terran ships will finally shine more after the proper rebalance, and maybe the entire affair of new weapons on old ships (EMP weapons specifically) can be finally resolved? I still hold out hope for that, you know.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it, the idea of a mini-DLC sounds promising.

Aldrin factions/ships/region would be much better for proper full DLC in 2026.
My hope for 2026 exploration update is some kind of procedurally generated region that would be successor to Unfocussed jumpdrive sector from X3.
Last, but not least, I still hope for Nomad E, Condor E and Stork E as free update (and remastered Argon and Teladi Large turrets).
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
Looking forward to trying out the updated flight model (presumably with the new boost behaviour?)
Hopefully some of these new sectors/clusters have decent Xenon strongholds to make them a little more viable. Better diplomacy options also sound interesting, it would be great to have something more than the simplistic A/B plot based options available right now.
Since you're contemplating what seems like purely content based DLCs, any chance of the Timelines specific ships/station modules as one?

Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
I hope that for Diplomacy, they will take notes from X3: FL Diplomacy and Agents system (e.g. blueprint purchase or stealing via spies/agents).
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
My guess is either Hyperion (is it M class in terms of X4?) or maybe main ship from X:Rebirthxant wrote: ↑Wed, 27. Nov 24, 19:37 Hype for the Hyperion! I think no other ship gets more requested than this one.

I think X4 lacks M6 size ships with their power and durability, M size ships in X4 are not that powerful and durable and shield regen is so slow...
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
Hope it's the Hyp. Though I wonder if they managed to design it to keep it's fighter dock slots that makes it really good. Maybe it'll be technically an L class and use piers? Since you can carry your own smaller ships that shouldn't matter too much, and as one of the recent Timeline mission where you need to actually dock on a Phoenix instead of comming them from space shows, M class have too many restrictions anyway that making it L class with S docking doesn't hurt too bad.
Of course it could be something else entirely... Hope it looks good, performs well and flies well, looking at you Astrid.
But yeah, if it is the Hyperion and can land S ships, that would pair well with my X-shuttle. That'll be the dream.

This, does sound exactly like what the community has been asking for decades, and it will be acclaimed exactly as all other things the community had asked for decades.

Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
I honestly hope we can get some X:R feels into X4 with the QOL improvements. X:R had some very unique stations and station models such as satellite dishes and ect... Would be nice to have more blueprints to pick from for personalization of stations and more ability to walk through station models like X:R. Would be SO cool if you could ride the TRAM on a Terran habitat model and walk around stations further.
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
Very big respect to Egosoft and its team for listening and actively engaging with community and accommodating needs of players. One of the best developers!
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
It's a shame that there's no mention of the best endgame content to date: Expeditions. The beta was awesome, not as boring as the crisis

Really like the mention of new connections for the Terrans & especially the Boron. Boron are such a great faction, but their limited connection to the rest of the X universe means you rarely stumble upon them beyond their homesectors.

Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
I've been a gamer since a kid, and whilst I have followed a lot of game series in that time, I cannot think of another studio or series who have proved quite as tenacious and giving as Egosoft and the X universe.
Looking forward to every single milestone listed here.

I'm extremely excited, especially for the diplomacy additions and I look forward to hearing more about them.
Much love to Egosoft!

I'm hope that the diplomacy part to be a fully optional thing. I know that are players that ask for it, am I respect this, but I have zero interest in it. If I like a diplomacy game, them I'm to play a 4X
game.
game.
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
4X or X4 what is the difference
But seriously, X4 is definitely 4X game, you can eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. And if you don't close the map in the endgame it is basically a strategy game

More exploration gameplay!
Diplomacy!
Steady stream of improvements, content, and MOAR!
Top marks, Egosoft. Top marks.
Just be sure to keep Alexei busy pumping out new tracks too, and all is right with the (X) universe. Cheers!

Selling ships now? I see that hiring a Star Citizen dev is already having an effect
Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
Exciting news! I had guessed from the poll about the boost model that there could be a flight model overhaul in the works. Definitely joining the beta when available.
One thing I keep hoping for is the ability to customize my character's appearance instead of just selecting from a limited number of presets. I know people are going to say "it doesn't matter, you never see yourself"... except we do; in a few scripted scenes, and in the live stream view. Even more when using the "Auto-camera and autopilot" mod.
It's a small thing, I know, and there are much bigger things going on... but I still hope for this eventually.
But anyway, totally excited for everything on the roadmap!

I want to play a Yaki but the only available preset for the custom start has the full face cyberware like Orcanica. That is the one cyberware that creeps me out, specifically the eyes.
Oddly enough, I'm not that bothered by Obelisk's cyberware.
If not a full character customization system maybe at least a few more preset options for Yaki with less extensive cyberware, eventually.

Re: What’s Next for X4? An Early Look into 2025
It does not sound bad, but one concerning thing is that nothing is said about fleet AI and combat AI which is are major pain points. I'll remind what issues are:
It would be nice to see ability to properly fly off-the-grid. Meaning explore planetary systems and see their orbits. But this might be beyond scope of the game (sadly). And sit in chairs.
Would also be nice to see weapons being made compatible across different ships. imagine Terran ships with xenon weapons. But oh well.

* Large ships have difficulty avoiding collisions.
* Simplistic combat behavior of small ships.
* Enemy and station hugging.
* Impossible to order fighters to avoid danger zones like turrets.
* Collision avoidance issues in general (I mentioned boids before as possible solutions)
* Ships have difficulty holding formations in general.
* Docking problems like ships flying through a wall while landing on stations or getting stuck.
