X4 does player logos the right way

Post by fm10m1kse »

This is just a random praise thread.

I don't know why exactly I enjoy making player logos so much, I just do. I used to mod Homeworld 2 (you had to decompile/recompile the game) for the sole purpose of replacing the Hiigaraan logo with my own.

I enjoy simulation/management games in general, and many of them include ways to have player logos. Many of these games include an in-game logo creator system which I kind of hate. The majority of these systems are based on shader creation systems like you'd see in Blender, and I find them obnoxious to use, when I could just pop open a photo editing program and very quickly make my own logo. So thank you Egosoft! I find your custom player logo system very easy to use, and basically does exactly what I'd want from a logo system!

PS feel free to share your own custom logos in this thread.

The only thing that could be improve, that I proposed long ago is to have "two modes" for each logo.

"Dark mode" and "Light mode" - this mean each logo made by Egosoft or created by players should have two version - light/bright one and dark one.

This is beause on certain hulls/paint mods the logo might no be visible clearly - e.g. dark logo on dark hull, bright logo on bright hull.

Each hull/paint mod woudl have "light/dark' flag as well.

The logic would be like that:
If light hull/paint is selected, then display dark logo
If dark hull/paint is selected, then display light logo

This should resolve the issue for most, but extreme cases.

It is possible to animate your playerlogo.
What i remember, you only have to increase the number of the file.
Like A1, A2, A3,... but i dont know how fast it will play the pictures :gruebel:

Yep, I like how you can make them out of a simple .png with a transparency layer.
You can also make them out of a .dds texture, take your pick.
I made mine with Paint.NET, from original artwork by Chris Achilleos ..

This one is "New Red Hood", I use his "First Lady" image in game, just used this one because its forum friendly. The Images I got from his "Beauty and the Beast" Portfolio, bought it back in the 90's from an Athena store.

Hope you dont mind but I worked on yours a bit, here it is on the side of a Yasur ..

De-aliased it a bit, gave it a bit of glow, and gave it a transparency layer to cut off those square corners, I also changed the white to a sort of cream colour which contrasts well with a lot of X4 ship hull colours - download the .png here if you fancy it ..

Oh it's not mine, I just found it on a Google search and added a transparency background to make it more attractive on my ships.

Great work on the work you put into it! I'll download it to check it out :D
