HELP! Workshoptool cannot upload- closes Steam when starting to upload!

Post by Commodore MJ Fire »

Wanted to upload my Mod to the Workshop- but after it starts the command console, it closes Steam automatically! I can restart the client and then work with the Workshoptool to create the package as in the tutorial described- but when I type 'y' to the upload question, it closes Steam again, when it starts uploading the main file! At the command console you can read the two 'please wait...' messages, but it does nothing more- of course, you have to be logged in to upload- BUT THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE WHEN IT AUTOMATICALLY CLOSES STEAM WHEN STARTING TO UPLOAD!
Does anybody (including the Egos) know, how to fix this? I have Win7 64-bit and its not the hardware- internet connection is stable at this time, and deactivating firewall changes nothing. Please, help!

Really? No one?
I just want to upload it to the Workshop to make it easier for everyone to use my Ency-Mod... And then the Workshoptool doesn't work... :(

Forgot to say- I also simply tried to wait. 2 hours, and last night I slept while it's working- 6 to 7 hours! but after the two uploading messages, nothing happens... But i think nothing can happen, when it CLOSES Steam before uploading to it. And re-installation does not working- the same as before.

I know that my mod is bigger than other mods (370 MB dat) but this is REBIRTH, so this size should be also standard for a Mod. Uploading it to MEGA or others takes not more then 2 hours...

This !

Workshop has sadly a limitation of 100 Mo for uploads of mods.

A thing you can do is to separate your mod in 4 pieces, this is not the best thing to do, but it should work..

EDIT : You can also upload base files on Workshop, upload large/optional files on Mega, and share the link of Mega on your Workshop description

Thats the Problem, the reason I wanted to have the Workshop as official platform is because it gets more and more difficult to find a really free uploader. Its starting that people get problems with downloading at MEGA, and there are more and more signs that MEGA turns to one of the other freaky pay sides out there- and MEGA was one of my last hopes.

Ok, this 100MB thing is crazy, the Mods out there now are just little modding pieces, not the real... mods, you know what I mean, as Xtended from X3.

So how should this work? When this bigger modding begins -and I think my mod is a small example, what we are talking about- they will in every case be bigger than 100MB. Ency is a baby, mostly just made from textures!

So that means Steam is again one of these false friends- and the bigger Projects get again the problem, that there is no official uploading platform they can use. This is not fair, Steam/Egosoft!

And the Link to Ency, who wants to know, what I am talking about:

I don't understand the problem with Mega.. It's free and there's no limitation on the bandwidth. Also everyone can download from it, no registration is required neither.

Maybe Steam will increase this limitation but for the moment mods with textures and models will have some problems :/ (Imagine this mess if you update your mod every day, if the player has to wait for 300MB download each time he launch his game..)

No really, as I said early, the best thing I see for the moment is to upload on steam the base of your mod, and upload optional files on Mega, with a link in the description (or if you want to stay on workshop, split those optional files into different workshop mods).
Cons : Players have to download more than only one thing and you have to work a bit more to separate your files,
Pros : Players will not have to redownload the entire mod if you do an update, only one of your different "workshop mods"

I also had no problems with MEGA, end it was my favourite uploader- until some of the users downloading my mod told me that there are limitations... :(

One of the biggest: Internet Explorer is not supported at MEGA- you need Firefox or other browsers to download something.

And then they told me, when you don't want to install the MEGA browser-app, downloading bigger files is nearly impossible- 12.5 kb per second (!).

So downloading is not as easy as I thought at MEGA. That's why I wanted to use the workshop- no more problems when downloading, and it's a official Rebirth platform.

But of coure, after all, MEGA ist still one of the best (and only) upload sides where you can download things for free.

Yes it seems that the limitation of MEGA is on the bandwidht, 10GB in 30 minutes max. (I've just checked that)

For Internet Explorer, the best thing to do is to not use it. Anyway, even if you like it, YOU SHOULD NOT USE IT FOR THE MOMENT, there's a 0-day loophole that has just been discovered and it affects EVERY versions of IE, so for the moment everyone should forget it.

You can also use Google Drive, there's no limitation (exception for your storage, 15GB by default). And you should have an account, i'm sure you're using Gmail or another google thing ^^

Yes, I know, and again, no n Problems for myself at MEGA- that are problems from other users told me at my mod threads.

The reason why this limitations disturb me a bit is my freaky wish for freedom- I don't want the people to exclude from my mod just because of the browser or program they use or don't want to use- because in other cases I also had problems with that by myself...
Thats also the reason why nexus is not an option for me.

And you also have to realize, that after all they're still many people using IE- a group too big to exclude just because you by yourself know that other browsers are better. I want that as many people use my mods as possible :D
hm, do i get problems with google drive when the traffic gets too high? that was the problem with dropbox...

I understand. But people who use this kind of softwares don't, and don't want to.

Drive doesn't seems to have any bandwidht limitation. The only one as I said is on your side (capacity)

Ok, then I will test it.
At this time, I of course still use MEGA for my mod, and some very friendly private uploaders at this forum gave me a place at their side.
When Ego/Steam won't upgrade the workshop (500 MB is much more realistic), then I also will try to split the mod- into the 4 systems.
