Questions about Gmax.

Post by Syndrome »

I've just downloaded Gmax and seeing as there are no tutorials or help files (that I can find anyway), I'll need some help from you users.

First, I have managed to create the following, basic, image:

I'm not quite sure what to call it.

Yes, very dumb, I know, but I could do a lot more if the following questions were answered:

1) How do I rotate the camera on the "Perspective" view?

2) How can I rotate models themselves on one point?

3) How do I make other shapes on the face of an already existing shape?

There will probably be more questions soon. Can these be answered though? Thanks.

I made a simple UFO tutorial for Cinema4D, but it uses pretty standard techniques that should port over to any other 3D app quite easily.

Here it is.

i read your tutorial before esd it was very enlightening,
most of the features used in it on C4D are easy enough to find on 3DS and probably Gmax aswell

i hate worded tutorials i need pics lots and lots of pics :D

hmm, I'm using 3ds, but mostly gmax and 3ds are similar if it's about simple editing..

Use the Arc Rotate tool - it's at the right of the bottom bar
Syndrome wrote: 2) How can I rotate models themselves on one point?
Well, not sure what u mean under "on one point", but to rotate an array of objects you should select the Use Selection Center or Use Transform Coord Center (that's a button on the top panel, straight after the transform buttons and coordinate rollout) Also if you are up to deal with some objects like with an array most of the time, especially during animation, but don't want to collapse them into single mesh, that's a good idea to group 'em.. This actually creates a group object all the components are related to as "children", eg they use group's coords for their transforms instead of world ones..
Syndrome wrote: 3) How do I make other shapes on the face of an already existing shape?
well, pretty strange question as splines have no faces - as you probaly know, faces are the attributes solely of meshes.. If you are about just collapsing splines into one, then you need one of them to be the Editable Spline class object (either convert or add Edit Spline modifier into it's stack).. Then select Attach option in modification rollout..

k, hope it helps.. Play with this soft for a while and u'll learn it pretty easyly without reading much info (at least I did)..

and one more thing - conical secondary coils kinda suck for a good Tesla coil, it's better to make a cylindrical one - and with toroidal, not spherical, top load capacitor
Attach the nails and electrodes!

Well this is off topic but since you asked:

How to place the gun hardpoints is done in the 3D software itself so youll have to learn that before you export your model

Not sure about the textures but if i am not wrong it imports them automaticly and you can choose one to use so...........

Now lets talk again about Gmax before this topic is locked

I had a look at the modding tutorials list and all of them pretty much are for people who actually know what they're doing. Me, I have absolutely no previous scripting, modding or 3d modeling experience. I also want to make my ship into .xsp format so I can use Cycrow's installer to install it into my game.

I think some one needs to write a tutorial just for me, and everybody else out there who has a programming knowledge factor of -100.

Oh well, I might just PM Dread or DeadlyDa or Observe (on second though no, not observe, he's probably too busy with the XFP) to just import it for me or tell me how to.

I'm just starting my first custom creation now.

Hmm, these still look like they require me to know something about the internals of X3.

Y'know, I know the X3 gameplay inside and out but I know absolutely nothing about scripting.

Perhaps you should try the scripting forum then? This is the creative one
