Make EVE, Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous fully playable offline and I may agree with you.
Seriously, we need more offline singleplayer space sims, not the other way around. The genre is flooded with MMO and multiplayer-based ones and few worthwhile singleplayer ones.
Simple co-op do sound tempting though...

They don't have to be stupid to try it. If you go on a big streamer doing X4, the first thing every normie in the chat says is like "what's this is this Skyrim in space xD" "can you land on planets", or "is this multiplayer". The problem is, if they commit to doing it, I don't have faith that important bug fixes and improvements will make it in, because just too much dev time would be needed for multiplayer stuff.

It is you who needs to grow up since you fail to realize that Egosoft can barely make a single player game. Making a multiplayer game isn't only "making multiplayer lobbies". Atleast from what im taking from this as its always been an "Maybe this time we might get a multiplayer option that will allow us to play with friends when we want to" but alas it never came and now they laid the ground works for a possible multiplayer option which would be amazing
As for anyone thinking "oh no EGOSOFT is gonna go do a bethesda" i just say 1 thing calm down grow up realize that EGOSOFT isnt that stupid we know that when they release a game at launch it will have some missing features it will have bugs it will have unfinished features left over from development but in the end of the day they always get it right so im sure things will be fine

Basically this. People being scared of "oh no, X4 will be the new Fallou76", yea, it doesn't work that way. For one, multiplayer games require a totally different engine, mechanics and game built from the ground up. You don't just press the [insert multiplayer] button. Also, as it's been mentioned (and quite obvious anyway), Egosoft can barely cobble together a halfway decent single-play game. How can you expect them to create a functioning netcode and an entire multiplayer experience. It's not happening, get used to it.

Considering one of the Steam Achievements for the game is for the Venture missions, it's extremely likely that Ventures will be added in a patch coming in the not-distant future. Far more likely they put the bolts/nuts in and left space for that functionality in the engine so in the future (X5+) they could make a multiplayer version if they felt like it. All the previous X games essentially used a version of the same engine which became a brick wall for implementing new things they could have done with a purpose built engine, this is just Egosoft planning for the future.

I'd be totally fine with a multiplayer instalment to the series as long as it offers a localised solution: meaning either private servers or LAN.
Any version that demands "always-on" services or forces me to play with random users would be a "thanks but no thanks" from me.

I just cannot agree. Beyond trying to balance it, because regardless if it's coop or PVP, it would need balancing so it played mostly the same regardless if solo or with a friend, but I don't want nor need to play every game with friends. This is best played solo, at one's own pace. When playing coop, there would be two (or more?) thinking and unpredictable influences on the economy that the AI would have to react with, and keep up with. So now the economies and factions are balanced for multiple influences, while I, the solo player would be affected. Sure, add some coding logic to scale it up or down based on the number of live users, but in the end, one or the other always gets sacrificed. Either the MP would suck, or the SP would suck. Rarely would there be great gameplay for both.
As others have said, there are more than enough online or MP space games...

It means exactly that - maybe not raids, as i really don't see Ego scripting boss fights well. It means the end of x series and x universe - most of all because one does not 'forget' major factions, one deprioritises them because players are the real factions. Multiplayer means that and also:
- Storylines can't/won't be implemented, it will stay a sterile arena sandbox with a couple of halfhearted, glitched mission chains at most- because progression, permanent change events and different galaxy states aren't MP friendly.
- The absence of faction and faction capital descriptions or any attempt to create a world (who needs that, it's going to be about YT and the same Elite and Eve guilds anyway)
- the mechanic of shared boost and shields that makes so little sense will make an awful lot more if you realise it's a PVP mechanic.
- genericness and 'fair balance' of mechanics (all ships are almost literally the same and shields and weapons too, nvm some of them are alien but 'balance' should prevail. Expecting paranid speed nerf *rolls eyes*
- minimum effort into literally everything that isn't MP friendly.

this obsession of turning everything into mutiplayer.. I will never understand. X Series is good as it is, and there are already lots of multiplayer options out there in other games. Many just like to play single player, and probably most of them play this game because of that.

Man I must been tired or just bad at explaining things. The point is the data mine we found suggests that Egosoft making a Normal X Game with the option of maybe in the future of some sort of direct ip MP and then there is the fun side missions for ventures.
Nothing here looks like their trying make a mmo, special paid servers, pvp, etc...
You would say Hey Mate I have my server up connect to my IP and they would connect and you guys would have some fun in a more co-op setting. If you and your friend choose to fight each other that is up to you.
Think of it like Freelancer and people today right this minute still play freelancer servers even more so because of the modding community.
I know some people speculate lack of story, etc. But it seems that the developers wanted to offer a bit more freedom in X4 not forcing plot stories but rather let you chose them later on to enter stories here and there. The first one not completed yet of course will continue overtime is the current one for the PHQ.

I do actually hope i'm wrong as f**k and clinically paranoid at that. i admit i can be a 'glass half empty and also it's pee' person - but i did see what Elite devolved into under a promise that MP will not diminish SP and perfectly good rationalisations that among other things managed to take in my very own self with her £140 - only to come across a very miserable end, the petering out of the Elite universe, giving way to an insanely, infinitely boring hero cult of a teenager called...seriously i can't say it without having tears in my eyes about the desecration of First Encounters...mf harry potter. So it is not like my projection of future events is absurdly wrong. I can be wrong in the end, especially if you say so - but hardly out of touch with the world these days.
