Voice Source - English

Post by thedesertwolf »

Considering that this is a topic that has been brought up several times before I thought it'd be prudent to give the modding community access to some native-speaker lines English dialogue.

I am first and foremost not a modder however I am entirely for providing the modding community with resources like this.

As it would be bizarre to hear multiple characters voice acted by the same individual having multiple people would be preferred.

Mark the npc type you'd like to add lines too as well as lines and the links to them. May as well make this as easy as possible to anyone who wants to pick them up.

I am not a voice actor but I will try my best to make it a heck of a lot more amusing. Volume quality might be a bit wonky at first as I figure out how to use the software. I am currently using the Moo0 voice recorder to do this.

If anyone has suggestions for a hosting site - That would also be appreciated. Media fire is... OK but not 100% what I'm looking for.

It can be pretty cool ! But...

The problem is that you need a recording studio ^^
Or a very good environment and a very good mic.

Thankfully I've got... :D A decent mic and some pretty ok recording software.

Still need to fine tune some things. At least it is being worked on.

It is still better than the current amount of engrish going on in the game. Heck if things go well we can get a bunch of other folks to add to this and get a whole range of selection going.

Trying to be constructive and potentially useful. Even if I do make the Black Market dealer sound like some back alley pervert... though the more I think about it, the more that idea amuses me to no end.

Ahh I found this darn thread again! A call out to anyone with decent recording software and some time on your hand, feel free to record yourself and put your clips up here so that we can help make the game sound as good as it should!

We need the following in both genders for each race. I'd love to get between 3 to five people per each one to give the voice acting a distinct feel of variation between them. I've already provided some examples above.

Things needed
- All races and genders - Pilots
- All races and genders - General goods
- All races and genders - Mercenaries
- All races and genders - Architects
- All races and genders - Arms Dealers
- All races and genders - Engineers
- All races and genders - Black Market Dealers

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not 100% certain what the codex is they use for the voice files but considering that it will be a sound file and aught to be well documented to their targeted paths. It shouldn't be too horribly hard to change.

Look at it this way, it's something fun, silly and none too difficult and it will help give the game a level of immersion to English speakers that it desperately needs.

Cool, gotcha, the assumption that we are all men may be closer to the truth,
however, I may be able to procure some women, for a modest fee, of course, and their vocal equipment. *the above is a joke, btw*
I know at least a couple of women who might help us, one Japanese, with an ny accent while speaking english, and the other german, with a good command of english, I suppose we need to take into account that lines spoken would also have to be repeated from neutral to warm, to cold and to angry due to player standing.

If we get enough interest, might I also suggest localisation?

the only limit with this is really access to a decent mic and a proper recording environment.
failing that, volumes of background chatter would be nice as well, making places feel a little more popular, I can also probably get a bunch of advertising soundbites from various sources that could com you when you fly close to those large advert things on stations.

oh, and I will look in the unpacked files I have for subtitles.

That sounds like a fantastic addition Staberind, I'm attempting to collect together a few friends and if luck has it I aught to be able to borrow my little brothers recording room next time I do these to get a proper sound bite to go with whomever I can borrow to fill in the gaps.

Just have them listen to the voice acting currently in game and then see if you can convince them to come up with their own lines to make the whole universe feel far more alive.

I'll be adding two more characters and associated lines after the holidays and after I have everything together I'll get to putting together credits for everyone who helps make this pet project a reality. Absolutely zero reason to not give credit where credit is darn right due.

Right now people I've collected are as follows, hoping to have a variation of at least three voices per so this should deter no one who wants to chip in.
Argon Architect 1 - male
Argon engineer 1 - male
Argon black market dealer 1 - male
Possibly Argon Female pilot 1 (Pending.)

It was quite surprising to me how many men do women's voice overs in cartoons and visa versa (that is to say that I knew it happens, just didn't know how MUCH it is done), so no need to worry if you can't find women to do womens parts, there are plenty of men that do womens voice overs in cartoons who you would swear is done by a women, and of course the opposite as well. The boy voice of "Bart Simpson" is done by a women, and some of the voices of women in "Bobs Burgers" are done by men etc. etc. etc.

Psssst, nobody needs to know that the group of pixels on their screen who they've fallen in love with is actually a man voice acting a female character lols.

I've got a studio mic (Blue Yeti Pro), some hardware for it, and would be willing to give a go at some of the lines.

I realize you wouldn't want the same person for all of the characters so if it'd be possible to get a script of the lines you'd like me to VA -I'm male- I'd be more than happy to help.

Maybe us forum volunteers can do a better job than the street volunteers. Wouldn't that be a hoot.

I have found the software of screaming bee http://www.screamingbee.com/ to be amusing and quite dramatic at producing a totally different personality.

I can take part of it too :
I'm a young french actor and actually want to work in video games voice overs :p
Can do french of course, and some english too (with still french accent, hope it doesn't matter too much)

I can get my hands on recording stuff, got a friend working in music

Oh yeah, forgot, i'm male. I could maybe talk some friends into it, both male and female once text is written.

And by the way, I Can also do text french translation (or is it traduction in english too ? i'm a little hangover from Christmas Eve, pardon my english :p)

Having someone doing proper translations into other languages is fantastic but for now we just need to get the ground work done on the English side. As noted above we aren't exactly lacking as far as NPC's to work with. After I get back home (Monday-ish) I'll be working on dialogue's for the assorted races, classes.

Accents are absolutely fine. Actually if there weren't any it would be a bit strange considering how massively spread out colonies were. Take a look at Earth by itself, how many different languages and accents do we have? Frankly adds character if you ask me.

Anyway, best wishes all!

I'll be getting back to folks with the entire array soon as I get something more than my little test batch there up.

Most of those look like they'd be better off than some of the combat lines already in place KRM398. The merchants I'd prefer to have a bit more flare to them (Face it, if you look like someone beat your face in with a shovel and then the back end of an elephant it kinda just leaves your voice)

I'll see about getting recordings going again around Monday and I'll leave the results here. Still need to finish up the initial batch but also need a fair bit of interest here to make this little project into a big reality.

Anyway - Fly safe o/

Trying to picture some old fart doing his job as a trader maybe have a trademark line like this:

By Golly...I'll take good care of you here!

You'll never beat these prices BY Golly!

So you again, one of my best customers, by Golly, its nice to see you!

or maybe:

well if it isnt the low life again, what do you need now?

hey lowlife, I have everything you need right here!

get back here you lower life form, I dont chase after people you know!

if you need some thing stop here, low life.

I'll beat any prices anywhere even for you, low life.

you stop where you are! if I cant beat any other traders offers its free! (more or less)< whispers

these are the lowest prices around! (more or less) <in whispers

need some thing for your ship? have junk to sell? You've come to the right place! Best prices around guaranteed! No need to check other places, trust me! (silent giggle)

heres a few more you your project, have fun.

Not sure Golly would work in all languages, here in the UK it's short for golliwog, a racist slur. In Aus it's a gob of spit or phlegm or used to indicate a liar.

For the most part though it's thought of as an expression of mild surprise.

When you are looking to add your own voice overs you need to watch out for little things like this.

"By Profitss!", may be better, perhaps more applicable, in fact,
Are the goner still about? I am sure we all remember a certain opinion on religion mentioned in the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy,
I wonder how possible it is to add more factions, perhaps one that changes its relations with you quite dynamically depending on how many escape pods you kill? or something not readily apparrent.

Teladis are very responsive to bribes and deals so new thoughts might be:

Lets make profits together!

dont pass me by! there are profits to be made here!

the greater the profits, the greater the rewards!

profits are lifes rewards.

the greater the skills the greater the profits

only a Master Trader could make these profits possible!

there are no profits in failure!

let there be profit!

a deal is a deal..

surely we can deal on this...right?

this is the best deal imaginable, take it or leave it!

this deal makes us both good profits...

no one can beat this deal! (probably)< whispered

Did you already find somebody to implement those files in a mod?
Its a shitload of replacing/adding work but i kinda start seeing red hearing those cheap static voices over and over again. ^^

I could offer some spare time, if needed.
