Well this looks amazing. I'm so excited. It's unfortunate that the game has ended up being another 'X' game instead of a new IP, but what can one do. There is nothing wrong with the universe itself so there is no reason to change it. As long as the game itself is good then the X universe offers a lot of background and story possibilities and is already very well developed.
I only have 2 concerns at this stage:
1. How much have they reused from x3? Is this going to be the same galaxy map and the same names and the same everything but with better graphics? One thing that is the definately the same is the ships computer which is unfortunate because it is pretty much universally hated by everyone*
2. Dozens of hours of gameplay sounds very very very short for an Egosoft game. Are we to presume by this that there is a big focus on story this time around, with a central plot which at some point simply ends leaving the player in a lurch. What would be really bad is to have a plot finish and then the game just lets you keep playing anyway but for no reason. What would be the fun in building up a big trading empire or fighting stuff if everything that actually happens in the universe has already stopped.
So I'm just saying, I hope Egosoft can engineer replayability into this game and still give us a high quality plot line. They managed to pull it off with x3, but then even that left the player with little reason to carry on doing anything beyond a certain point. You know what, I don't even know what my point is anymore. I'm just saying I hope there is both a good plot and a lot more than 'dozens' of hours of gameplay to be enjoyed.
In fact I think I know what I'm trying to say here. If there is a central plot line that requires the player to do stuff (trade etc) on their own in order to succeed, then it had better be hard enough that it will take the player hundreds of hours to achieve everything that needs to be achieved in order to complete the plot. But if there is some way of sailing through the entire plot without needing to build up a vast army or trade, then that could be dissapointing.
Also, here is my wish list
1. Better auto pilot
2. Better fleet management. There is nothing I hate more than having to manually fit every ship I own, it's just boring. There should be that option for people who want to do it, but there should be options that are more streamlined for people who don't.
3. More varied non plot missions
4. Stations not to go hostile just because one laser/bullet touches them
5. slower increase of rep so that it's harder (but more meaningful!) to build up a positive rep
6. A propulsion system which makes me feel like I'm going fast. Even if it takes 20 minutes to cross a sector, that is fine. But I want to feel like I'm hurtling through space on the way there. I want the stars rushing past me and everything to feel exciting and cool. I don't mind traveling for a long time, I just want to feel like I am definitely moving, which is a feeling I never had in x3.
7. Capital ship battles that last for more than 30 seconds. I don't want it to be BANG BANG BANG..... Boooooom. I want to have an actual tactical battle where I hvae time to think and make a few decisions. The shields on a capital ship shouldn't be drained in just a few seconds. And the hull should take a long long time to fully breach. In fact it really shouldn't be one uniform hull and shields % for big ships like carriers and destroyers. The hull should be divided into sections which function independantly but are interlinked. Each section could house different parts of the ship, leading to tactical decisions during battles. Same for shields actually. The ship should have more than one % for shields.
Anyway, that's me sounding ungrateful over. I'm so so so so sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited about getting this game as soon as possible. I'm literally so excited. Also I to everyone who has mentioned TES V coming out in the same quarter, do you really believe that? I think we'll be lucky if it comes out by this time next year. So that leaves plenty of time for enjoying TNBT exclusively until it comes out
*Saying that though, it's not so much the voice that gets to me, but the fact that one has to hear it constantly over and over again all of the time. If I'm quickly scrolling through targets and stuff then it gets so annoying. Paticularly how she has to say "Alpha" or "Delta" or "Gamma" etc after every station name.
