X3TC and Windows XP 64-Bit Problem

Post by Almost Tactful »

Hello guys, first off what a great game :)

I have a slight problem though, I am getting about half the frames per second that I should be. I'm only getting about 30-40 with all the setting maxed and I should be hitting 60-80 no problem. From what I can tell on another forum I frequent (we have an X3 bench thread) it is in fact XP-64 bit that is hindering us. Anyway, I'm not sure is someone can help but here is my system specs:

Intel Q6600 @ 3.6gHz
ATi HIS HD4870 @ 790 core 4400 RAM
8GB Mushkin DDR2 PC6400 @ 960mHz and 4-4-3-10
2 X 150GB WD Raptor HDD's in RAID0
DFI LanParty LT X48 T2R
Windows XP Pro 64-Bit
800W PSU
Antec 900

Oh and I'm using X3 from steam so it is still the 1.2.1 version ;)

People with 1.3 do seem to be reporting performance improvements. You'll have to wait for Steam to provide the 1.3 update, of course, but hopefully it's something to look forward to. :)

I am running Steam Version of 1.21 on XP-64 without problems. My old game is kinda slow, but the new start is UBER fast.

Give us your dxdiag report as mentioned in the sticky at the top of the forum. Someone may be able to spot the problem. :)
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.

Hey,

when you say that's the framerate you're getting, is that in-game or in the benchmark, and if it's in-game what are you doing at the time?

A framerate of 30-40 isn't shabby and I wouldn't personally call it a problem :P but it depends on the business of the sector
Math problems? Call 0800-[(10x)(13i)^2]-[sin(xy)/2.362x]

Well in the bench I average 64FPS and at the other forum I frequent where we have a thread dedicated to this bench identical systems with different OS's are hitting about 100FPS @ 1680X1050 and everything maxed including AA and AF. In the game if I'm just cruising through a crowded sector with everything maxed and only 4X AA and AF I'm hitting around 35FPS, then if I cruise through at 600% seta I drop to about 20-22FPS and in fire fights as low as 15 FPS. Also while I'm playing every 10-20 mins I get a little blip where it drops to 0FPS for about 1-2 seconds and then it picks up again.....I'm confused.

The demo doesn't emulate the heavy CPU load that this game generates, so unless your CPU is substantially more powerful than your GPU you won't likely see the same figures in both. I'm not really an expert on judging performance just by looking at the PC specs, but your experience seems ballpark at least, to me, on your specs.

I just thought I'd add in my 2c. I have 4gb ram, and with the extra ram switch enabled on the exe, for me, X3TC will run faster in Vistax64 than Win XPx32.
Also, I did notice slightly less stuttering with the 1.3 update. Saying that, my biggest performance increase was my move from 32 > 64 (WITH the >3gb switch enabled; unmodified EXE was better in 32).

I've read up on this a little and I seem to be getting mixed reviews on it, can I change the switch even though it's ran through steam?

Well I got it all set but then on Steam it says the game is unavailable at this time and I had to verify and fix game cache files......I really need to buy a hard copy, I hate steam.

Yea, you wont be able to get the 1.3 patch to work on Steam. Since the patch updates the exe, steam will have a fit when you try to run it afterwards. The previous patch (1.2.1) didn't modify the exe (so I've read), and Steam wouldn't overly mind that the game files had changed, just as long as the exe is still the "valid" steam one (hence some people got that one working on Steam).

Also, I just realised that you're using x64 XP, not x64 Vista... x.x
I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if there was a decrease in performance on 64 XP to 32 XP, and also to 64 Vista.
x64 Vista has matured greatly over its life, and is now quite stable and runs at least as well as x32 XP. The biggest problems plaguing Vista and its slowness were immature drivers; x64 XP is still likely suffering from this due to its low distribution levels.

The main reason I have XP-64 is because I needed 8GB of RAM for school, and when I build the rig back in 8/07 Vista was still to new to be bothered with, I just need to stop upgrading everything else so often and get a new OS

Ah, yea, I too went through that phase (needed the extra ram but Vista was still shit so XP x64 was the only choice). However when I upgraded my comp a couple of months ago I decided to go Vista x64 - I have yet to have any regrets.
I have maybe the slightest of problems trying to get ancient games working, but in 99% of cases, it is resolved simply by running them in compatibility mode; I strongly recommend you try it. If however you're anything like me with computers (knows what they're doing), a quick bit of Googling to disable the stupid UAC, and activate the "REAL" administrator account (do this!), and it's exactly like running XP (I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers; I know how to take care of my comp, and to not run the "freesexpics.exe" files, lol).
I'd recommend trying it as a dual boot at the very least; you never know, it might actually fix your problems.

Yeah I really need to, everytime I have some cash I seem to upgrade else where. For example I just bought the wife a new rig for x-mas and a new Canon 1000D DSLR, anyway here is what she will be running:

Antec Three Hundred Case
Intel C2D E7300 2.66gHz CPU
ATi Sapphire HD3650 GPU
Silverstone ST400 PSU
Asus P5Q Pro Motherboard
2X2GB OCZ Gold DDR2 PC6400 RAM
Western Digital SATA 200GB 7200RPM HDD
LG DVD Burner
Multi Card Reader
Sunbeam Core Contact Cooler
XP Pro 32-Bit Corp Edition

Who knows maybe I'll play it on her rig instead
