thats been on the site for years, and so far theres been no confirmation that its even been started
Does it happen all the time on play.com? Because pre-ordering games years before they even announced is not a common practice. Or perhaps you bought a game from them and waited for years, if so, please share your experience with us. Did you receive the game? Since these are all digital copies and there is no shortage of it, why would you make them an advance payment?

I am really curious about the motivation behind selling a game not even backed by its developer yet.

no i havn't paid for any of those, i very rarly pre order a game, especially one that early and one thats not even been announced.

but it does happen alot on play, like i said, Elite 4 has been available on that site for a long time now, and there are plenty others like that. Play isn't the only one to do it, i've seen other online stores do it as well

Usually they pre-sale , already in development games couple months before their official release date. To be honest I am not too familiar with play.com and I will take your word for it.

My mind on one thing doesn't change though. If egosoft authorized them for collecting orders, then it doesn't need to be a secret since game is already on display. If egosoft didn't give them permission then its better asking them what they are selling :)

I used to use play.com all the time.
You can pre order from play.com but they only take money off
you once the item is dispatched, so if its delayed then you dont lose
out by them taking your money off you in advance.

Dragon Piolt No1: "Split say lets all charge at this Terran M2 and fire our Hammerhead missiles at the same time!"
Dragon Piolt No2: "Split say that's a good idea".
Random Boron: "Take ship!"

Could be a belivable start.

I would not pre-buy any first generation offerings anyway, let alone on the premise that it will come out some time in the future. I think most of us know what it is like to have lack of tech support, requiring immediate (and not getting them!) patches, then finding v2 is same price, if not cheaper!, fully working, only requires minor adjustments and gets expansion packs that don't require major game updating.
:(
Then I came across X-Universe and life has never been the same... What life?.

That, in my opinion, is the last thing this game needs really. Some new shipmodels maybe, but the graphics engine should be left well alone save for additional optimising.

Average people are only just getting systems that can run it at full spec as it is!

Just to correct you there, esd, it could well be the East... afterall, it was the East who launched out into the X-Universe. Just look at all the Asian symbology and text (I believe it's Japanese?) plastered over Argon ships.

The universal trade language in the X-Universe is also Japanese.

It appears Japan may be Earth's superpower, or maybe just one of them.
Quite the opposite, actually. I read the timeline a while ago, and what happened was, Japan had a serious economic crash and most of the Japanese fled the country to go work elsewhere. Because of the permeation of Japanese scientists around the world that followed, Japanese ended up becoming 'the language of science'.

Yeah, it didn't make sense to me either, but it's what Egosoft decided would happen, so it's lore until they retcon it.

As for the unified government or national government thing, there are two facts I think warrant consideration.

First, they call themselves 'Earthfleet'. That suggests that they're the only fleet Earth has got. At least whoever organized them views them as the official fleet of Earth, which you wouldn't really do unless you were claiming dominion over the whole world. It's possible that only, say, NATO was able to actually field a space fleet, and thus calls themselves Earthfleet, but if you're so technologically superior that you're fielding the most powerful ships in the universe, you'd be a real jerk to leave other nations without even the ability to make a station in orbit. Really you're doing people a favor by just conquering them at that point so they can share in your advanced technology.

Two: The big ring around Earth. Either there's just one government, or all the nations are REALLY buddy-buddy to have allowed a project that covered the ENTIRE EARTH to succeed like that.

Another small point. It's 1000 years in the future no? Even if we just take the small island of Britain in 1007 and contrast that with 1000 years in the future. How different will Earth be in 1000 years time?

personelly I think they are going to fill in the gap between the xenon attack on earth and them coming through the gate to Heretics end, some kind ok war between the terrans and an unknown race which makes them so protective of the earth gate.

Duno if anyone has seen this as i dont frequent these forums much anymore after being disapointed with the lack of progress from x2 to x3. But i keep an eye out on new space games so thought id post that i found this. I duno if its just made up stuff or not but play.com gets it right with this stuff alot of the time.

Anyhow so this might be the expansion pack to x3.

Absolutely, we haven't even seen everything the current engine can do, let alone have them add to it.

Egosoft need not go the way of first person shooters, with their unbelievable graphics and correspondingly high hardware spec requirements, just for what is, when it comes down to it, a game where you run around shooting other people. Each new FPS is trying to outdo the competition and themselves on facial expressions and suchlike. It's crazy.

Heck, I still play quake (well, glquake), and love it.

I'm entirely happy with the current X engine. I wouldn't mind seeing some new additions to the trading options, and a new map with new sectors, that'd be enough for me.
