Uhuh
I'll try and work on that.
I need help with transparency. I can't use GIMP on my computer for some reason (and I did install those other GTK+ runtime environment things). I think it's to do with the BIOS and that's out of my reach. I don't have photoshop but an old version of ArcSoft Photo Studio, though. I also use some basic programs such as photofiltre and IrfanView as well. The thing I'm strugling with is that all the transparency tools in these programs are based on colour, not on sections, which can be really annoying.
For example. This is a picture beforehand:

And this is it after transparency with pure black as the colour.

Even with zero tolorance it's messed up because the Levi has black colours on it as well.
I can't find any 'section' tranparency tools. Can anyone help?
What programs do you use? If you don't have Photoshop, try using Paint Shop Pro, there is a free (test) version or try to find it in PC Magazines, its almost as good as Photoshop, but still only almost.
In the Terran sig, try to use a gradient transparency (fading effect), so it won't look "cut". (How to do this in Photoshop
Here)
To delete a background you surely can use the magic wand, but as you noticed it wont work always as you wish (specially in dark or low contrast pictures).
Besides this one, there are 2 other ways to do this, and even better.
1. Using the pen tool.

With this tool you can draw a path along the edge of the object you want "cut" from the picture, its a very easy to use tool. When you finish drawing the path, click on the path-tab (usually on the right), right-click on the workpath and select "Make selection". On the next pop up message input 0,5 (or 1), now that u have a selection who fits or object you just need to press Shift+Ctrl+i to invert the selection, make sure that you are working on a unlocked layer and press delete.
This is usually good to cut background on solid object with sharp edges, like Ships and so on. To cut object with no sharp edges like people (especially the hair part, can be tricky
) use the 2. hint.
2. Using the eraser

With this tool you can cut any background and, depending on how much effort you are willing to invest, actually very accurate.
Select de eraser tool, on the top bar there is a number, change the number to fit the object you are cutting, for ex. strait edges on a 300 dpi resolution picture I use a size between 50-100, just change the size as u need to clean some narrow areas. Have the hardness slider between 0 and 50, depending on how much transparency you want/need. Don't be afraid to delete parts of the edges, as they will be not completely erased it will create a better fading effect.
Try all the methods more then once, so you get better results as you go.
Most of the Image editing programs work the same way, its possible thou, that the tool are located somewhere else.
Hope I could helped a bit. Enjoy.
