Hi,
Does someone know why L Class Capital Ships have better Radar range than XL class ?
48k for L class , and 36k or 24k for XL oO
I wanted to build some fleets for patrol, and i ve just found that using a L ship as leader may be efficient than using a XL ship
thanks.

Maybe after all the guns and shields, and the generators to drive them, there's not much room for scanners... (Ie. they can't see/hear past their own "awesomeness") Or maybe all those weapon and shield power sources cause interference... Or the thicker hull and shield get in the way (though, presumably, the sensing bits of the external sensors would be on the OUTSIDE of the ship.) (And suddenly I have an image of a Taranis with a Command Relay, the station radar module, strapped on.)
Anyhow, I prefer to use L ships for patrol duties anyhow, as they are faster, so can respond more quickly to unruly guests. That being said, when I do have spare XLs lying around, I do dot them around my important zones, on their own so that they don't slow down my faster patrols (in plot DV, for example, I usually use pairs of Strommies, sometimes with a Balor attached, as patrol squads, while spare Sucelluses [Sucelli?] get to roam in solitude and look big.) Obviously in OL this is not generally possible if (as I usually do) I insist on going fully indigenous, as everything in OL is so beeeeeg...!

Oh, if you're still using MICT, that's my fault. Vanilla l ships have 24km radar range.
Can't actually remember why I increased their radar range. One reason might be MICT Balors having such long range, but I think I also had this vague idea of l ships doubling as radar ships for their squadrons (which I think I never got around to doing because they use their own radar or their squadron commander's). Makes them better at long-range interception than xl ships which fill a more primary strike role though. For the life of me, cannot remember if it was planned that way, or if that effect is serendipitous.

Whatever the case, I think your reasoning is soundw.evans wrote:Oh, if you're still using MICT, that's my fault. Vanilla l ships have 24km radar range.

Actually, vanilla balor has 24k radar range, and arawn has 36k !!!
I payed attention to the radar range, beacause, i wanted to know if actually the subordonates uses the leader radar or not,. I thought making a fleet with a high radar range as leader would be better on patrol zone !

Capital ships and small ships directly subordinate to capships use their squadron commander's radar range to acquire targets. Once acquired, they'll start using their own radar. This was done so that all members of a squadron attack more-or-less at the same time if the squadron is authorized to do so.
Small ships escorting small ships use half of their own radar range. This is to keep fighter wings together until they're fairly close to their targets.
