Mod`s downloads other than nexus?

Post by zdan30 »

Ive resisted joining the nexus so far in my life and for just a few mods that id like to try help me get into this game more i dont really want to join it now.
So is there anywhere other than that i can get all the mods for Rebirth?
Im hoping someone has their own page with them on or something similar.

Im expecting to take some flak as im sure your all staunch nexus fans.

Also if this is on the wrong board im really sorry,i know ppl get touchy about these kinds of things too,i wasnt sure where to post this but its a question about mods in the mods and scripting section?

Anyway im goin gto hide behind this wall and await a hopefully positive reply x

Why the anti nexus? You don't have to pay to d/l although nexus obviously encourage that. Just d/l or don't :)

Hi zdan30

I have used other download sites and waited upto a day fore the download to finish and using Nexus i've found Nexus the quickest so if you want to wait a few seconds use Nexus and if you want to wait anything up to a day or more use another download site.

I've bought a lifetime premium membership on the nexus sites for 60 dollars or something and I have to say it was one of the best investments of my life. I've download many many .... many mods for many games from the site. So yeah, at least try it out.

I personally tried steam workshop, nexus, and moddb and I prefer nexus.

Nexus by far is the site that has most # of XR mods I know of (FYI: it's true for lots of other games as well). I personally don't want to use steam workshop since I've gotten used to the nexus's UI a while ago... Not to mention it offers the modder more autonomy as well. (submit without moderation, multi-author, version control, permission control, separate forum allowing multiple topics posted for the same mod, user-specific download bans, etc. etc.)

Hi all, Just wondering why some modders pefer Nexus over Steam?
As a player that really dose'nt know much about the inner workings of computers. With Sream workshop all I have to do is subscribe and its added to my game kinda like click and play. With Nexus I have to make a new directory? I don't know how to do that.If someone can guide me how step by step I might be able to figger it out. Thanks in advance for any help. :)

I have Windows 7 home premium service pack 1

The Steam Workshop has a file size limit of 100 MB. So if your mod is bigger than that and unless you want to split it into several parts (which can be rather unpractical), you will have to find different hosting places. In addition, the Nexus website is already a famous hosting place for different other games (Fallout 3, Skyrim etc.) providing features to upload and manage mods for modders and to browse, rate and discuss mods for users. If someone uses Nexus already for another game, this would be a strong argument for using it for XR as well.

As for installing mods manually, there is an explanation at the top of the X Rebirth modding guide sticky. Creating a new directory, isn't anything else than creating a folder.

@rguy

Go to this folder in explorer (in win 7, I assume same for win 8 ) :

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\X Rebirth
You should see there is already a folder called 'Extensions' here, as it will be made when installing from Steam Workshop too.

The Nexus mods will be placed inside this folder, so for instance my "Copilot Convo" mod from Nexus will have the folder structure :

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\X Rebirth\extensions\CopilotConvo
Feel free to ask again if uncertain about anything.

Hi Yorrick, thanks for the info but I could'nt find it the way you showed, but was able to find the right file ( I think ) by going to the start button on Win 7 then going to " computer " then to C: and following your code was able to find C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\X Rebirth\extensions . So now I know how to find it if I download from Nexus. So you did help I don't think I could have found it without knowing what to look for :D

Ok another question, I downloaded some mods from Nexus to the extensions folder, but they do not show up in the extensions when I start Rebrith. Is there something else I need to do besides just downloading from Nexus? Do I need a program to unzip them? If so where can I get one,and where do I download it to?

P.S. when I go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\X Rebirth\extensions, they are in the folder

Yes you do need to unzip them :) If they have a .zip name, windows can do that for you so double click to open it, right click the folder inside and select 'copy', then right click + 'paste' into the extensions folder, deleting the .zip afterwards. If it has a .rar name, I recommend 7zip to open it. Once installed again double click the .rar but this time just drag the folder to extensions.

Also see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... =windows-7 for zip files on windows :)

Thanks Yorrick, but 1 more question just to make sure I'm clear on this, I downloaded the files to the extension folder so can I just unzip them there or do i have to put them in another folder and then copy/paste to the steam extension folder, sorry for the bother but I don't want to screw something up

Just Unzip them there.
Don't worry about screwing up, if something goes incredibly wrong, you can clear out the extensions folder and then start again.

Just a tip for modding (and this applies to every game that can have mods installed), is to backup your save games before you install any mod. The location that XR has its saves in is 'My Documents\Egosoft\'. Simply make a copy of the X Rebirth folder and paste it somewhere, so if a mod stuffs something up, you always have a backup of your progress.
