Weird Incompatibility with iGPU cards, please fix this egosoft!

Post by rabcor »

In X3TC/X3AP i cannot open the steam overlay.

This is due to the fact that for some reason, if the game detects an active iGPU despite being configured to use the dedicated (nVidia) card it will disable the possibility to open the steam overlay.

Through some testing, i found out that if i have the iGPU Multi-Monitor suppport enabled in the bios (Support for having both the iGPU and the dedicated GPU enabled side-by-side)

It is irrelevant whether i use the iGPU to run the game or the dedicated GPU, i haven't tried to see what happens if i run it with the iGPU but that is besides the point as i need to run the game with my dedicated GPU for good graphics quality anyways.

It also does not matter how i otherwise configure my bios settings related to gpu (for example, default primary GPU) the game simply will not launch the steam overlay if an iGPU is detected in the computer.

I have a reason to want to have the iGPU enabled alongside my dedicated gpu despite not actually using it (it's linux related but i am running the game on windows, i have dual boot)

On a side note, i've been experiencing frequent game crashes (particularily in AP) and i just got told by another player that he has never experienced a single crash. I highly suspect that this is related to this same issue.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Get a computer with a recent motherboard, intel i-series processor and nvidia GTX graphics card set up with Windows 7 x64

2. Configure the bios to allow iGPU Multi-Monitor support and connect 2 screens to the computer (1 to the iGPU, 1 to the nVidia one)

3. Confirm once inside windows that you are successfully using both graphics cards. (after you confirm this, it is completely irrelevant whether there is an active desktop on the iGPU or not)

4. Start X3AP from steam configured to use the nVidia GPU (be it added as a non-steam game, or the steam version of the game)

5. Try to launch the steam overlay (and fail)

6. Disable the iGPU multi monitor support so only the nVidia card is active when the computer starts, and try again (and succeed to launch the steam overlay)

If the devs want to fix this issue but do not have access to a computer with a similar setup, i will gladly assist (this can be done by sending me modified game files or using steam's private beta function)

Original post on steam forums here

Note: I have not checked what results i get in the linux release of the game(Windows just gets better drivers), and not the results i get if i run the game via the iGPU rather than the nVidia one.

Does this happen generally with Steam games or solely with X3/AP? Because at present it sounds more like a Steam issue down to your weird setup than anything Egosoft need to address.

^ as I understand it even though you got your game via steam, you still need to register your game here at egosoft (under your profile) to be able to post on tech support. igpu's are very common now and hopefully this will be resolved asap ...

There would be little point moving this to Tech Support until you've registered your game because you wouldn't be able to respond to any answers you receive. I'll therefore lock the thread--please register your game and PM me and I'll get it moved, or else you could just repost it yourself.

Quite the seperate cause but for the same issue, just to clarify though my UAC is off and i had already tried setting the game to compatibility mode with windows XP SP2

This is only happening in X3, i haven't ever had this issue with any other of the 100-ish games i have played through steam.
