Joystick configuration issue.

Post by Masaccio78 »

Hello guys.

I'm using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. And I have a problem with the configuration of the buttons.

And it seems like I need some help.

I'm using the POV/HAT Swich thingy to look around. But I would also like to use the POV/HAT switch for example to strife. That is of course with a combination with a botton. like for instance button7 + POV. But I cant seem to do that in the Controller / Game configuration menu. What I can do, is to use the hold button 7 and then add POV left to strife left. But If I would create Hold Button7 + POV up, to strife up. It cancels the previous strife left setting.

In flight sims. I use these Combinations allot. (Button + HAT switch) And I would love to do this in this game aswell. Is there a way to do that? :?

Thanks in advance!

From memory, I don't think you can use combination modifiers directly within X3. Hopefully someone will contradict me however.

Do Logitec have a key mapping utility for their controllers?

If so, you can map the desired combinations through that, to the default keys for strafing. I know I can do it in the Saitek software, so hopefully Logitec have a similar application.

can strife with joystick

Post by inhand »

I use the same logitek joystick. I have not been able to program the hat to strife. I have tried to program other buttons to strife but I have not been able to do it. Has anyone been able to get the logitek joystik to work with strife?

Thank you

The only modifier key that X3's built-in keyboard mapper can use is the Shift key (on the keyboard).

If you want to use a button on your stick, then you will need to use an external controller macro program such as Logitech Profiler, Pinnacle Game Profiler, or XPadder.

It used to work that way in X2 and previous games. But the X3 interface did away with that function, unfortunately. I, personally, found it very useful and was disappointed when it went away. The POV hat is now single use. You can use it for either looking around or for strafing, but not both. Sorry.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

In X2, I use the same stick with POV for straff and twist for roll (IIRC). There is not much that beats piloting an X2 Nova with a Joystick :)

However, for X3 a digital button/POV is inadequate to control Straff (straff is analogue in X3 as opposed to digital in X2) and as a result prefer to use a dual analogue stick game pad with straff up/down mapped to forward/back on the right stick and roll mapped to left/right on the right stick.

I have not tried to map my stick's hat to strafe/roll but I do use the hat for 3 different functions.

1 to look around
2 to switch targets using ITS, next/previous target next/previous group (shift+hat)
3 in menus navigation up. down, left, right (shift+hat)

I have 3 joysticks at home. 2 of them with more buttons a modifier/shift key as well as a twist function on the stick that I could use to roll. At first I tried to use these ones for X3, both hands on the joystick, but it was not something that I liked, no matter what I did I was always running out of buttons and to cram the most use out of the buttons available I had to settle for an uncomfortable setup, I eventually scrapped the whole joystick idea.

It is only recently that I picked up a joystick again and actually started enjoying playing X3 with it, so much that I don't think I would like to play it without it anymore. The difference this time around was that I have picked up the simpler stick, less buttons and features but with all the 6 buttons + hat on the actual stick. This to me is the most important feature to play X3 with a joystick.

I do not know of any joystick that can compare with the keyboard as far as number of buttons and familiarity for my left hand, it has been living on the ASDW for over a decade. Using the Shift key as a modifier (6 buttons + HAT) x2 + full left hand access on the keyboard.

I would advice anybody who is trying to play X with a joystick to try left hand on keyboard - right hand on stick approach instead of both on the joystick using the Shift key as the modifier.

Yeah, that's the best answer, IMHO.

I just realized that I do it automatically. Never really thought much about it. :)

Your post reminds me that I use Shift with the hat on my stick for many functions -- but NOT for strafing. I did try mapping strafe to the hat, but that caused CTD's for me. TC and AP have a problem with repeated signals from some external controllers -- including the hat on one of my sticks. As a result, I use the hat for single-press functions such as scanning, targeting nearest incoming missile, Turret On/Off, Launching Marines, etc.

It is possible that a different stick and/or computer might act differently.
