Some questions about this section:

Post by Jaycen_Aelis »

Hello! :D Let me say that I'm enjoying reading everyone's creative contributions; they make the X-Universe an even more thriving and bustling place. However for all the fun, I'm left with a few crucial questions about what belongs in this forum, and just what's going on here.
1) Generally, what can one put in this forum?

2) Why the prevalence of DiD's?

3) Why list your "custom rules"/scripts/mods?
-I'm particularly curious to the answer to this one, because from what I'm gleaning from trying to read between the lines here on the forum, I'm seeing things like "drop-in/drop-out", and "Pilots wanted", and things like that. Now I know X is not multiplayer, but these phrases had me confused. I have some speculation as to why this is--but I want to hear it straight from a source, so I don't go off half-cocked with my own (likely incorrect) theories.

4) Do you have to be "approved" somehow before you can start writing here?

Thanks a bunch in advance for your replies! :D

1: Pretty much anything, stories, art, videos if that's your thing (links anyway, not embedded). It doesn't even have to be from the X universe, although I'm not sure what kind of reception you'd get for anything else :p

2: DiDs are the single most exciting way to play the X games. Because it's SO easy to die if you take your eye off the ball a lot of folks like to record their exploits, some write stories around them, others just like a straight action report style. Because we're all X gamers we can all appreciate somebody elses experience :)

3: Because there are so many different ways of playing, especially with the use of mods and scripts, we generally list rules etc so readers don't get confused. I think Dragondream said in his original DiD listing 'If you're playing with the Battlestar Galactica mod and haven't made your readers aware of it they'll be a bit confused when you announce the purchase of the Galactica'. Also, because a lot of us have played the game to death and know most of the exploits we can avoid things like this: Day 1 - Mined Nividium, Day 2 - Mined Nividium, Day 3 - Bought myself a sick ass fleet. :p The whole 'Pilots Wanted' thing...I'm not sure where that started, but making a story at least partially interactive makes it more fun, and adds another element for the author to play with. Check out Scion Drakhar's 'From Nothing' for a perfect example :D

4:  No. :p Anyone is welcome to post here.

Hey, thanks for the awesome and quick reply :) Really appreciate it! I don't know if I'm gutsy enough to do a DiD yet :P But I keep good logs--so I may at some point simply write all of them down, spice them up into a coherent plot and place it here--but it'll be a while yet. I don't even have my player HQ  But again, thanks, really appreciate the helpfulness and speed of -everybody- around here. :D

Don't worry to much about DiD's. Flip through the list and look at all the ones that died rather quickly. They're still great stories.

On the other hand, the most fun I've had with one yet is writing A Truly Savage Split, which was a Dead Is Drunk. I tried 5 times to start it as a DiD, and it just refused to go. So I wrote it with each death being told as him getting so stone cold drunk he died in a dream. Tons and tons of fun because I still had to try, but I could revel in the accidental pain and torment I ran into.

Hey thanks. BTW, you guys are equal parts evil and awesome :P I started "From Nothing", and I can't. Put. It. Down!!! Ach. I'm gonna lose sleep over this--I just know it. ;) Thanks for the tips, both of you--and of course you both star in "From Nothing," so was that a plug?

No plug on my part, I only suggested FN cos it's a great story and a perfect example of how reader created content can enrich an already epic tale :) When I started getting pilots listed for my own DiD I was like 'Awesome! More for me to work from than just my imagination! :p '

As no had mentioned it yet, definitely read Nuklear-Slug's works. You won't regret it, and he did popularize the idea of DiD, if not start it.

DID Tales:

Post by Sabrina Bergin »

I concur with all the prior comments The X universe is an immersive sandbox game that develops by necessity in solitude.
The DID Tales allow us to participate in other player/authors games vicariously, true but it all enhances the experience that is the X universe.

By suggesting writing a praisee of a character that an author includes in an active DID story. It further enhances our experience and enjoyment of the game as seen told through the authors eyes/imagination.
