[AP] Win7-x64 out of RAM issue -- Resolved

Post by Mergelsberg »

I've been playing AP for the past few weeks now and recently I've been getting a message from Windows after a few hours of gameplay.
In this message Windows suggests that because X3AP is using ~3GB of RAM that I may want to close it down to free up RAM.

When this happens there is always several GB of swap still available, but even tacking on 2GB extra in swap doesn't pacify windows.

I've run with perfmon open in the background to see if this message is caused by some sort of memory leak, but that does not seem to be the case. Memory usage seems to hover around 2900-3000MB and the message only pops up when it exceeds 3100MB.

As it stands my game is relatively new, under 2 days of played time. The only thing I can think of is that the messages started soon after I launched my first ST.

I have the steam version of the game and both TC and AP verify correctly. As far as I know the game should be vanilla, although in game statistics do show the modified tag.
I have no idea why this is, I do have the bonus pack for TC installed, but the AP install is fresh from steam vanilla.

Anyways, is this message a known issue? If so is there a fix or workaround other than hurry to make a save and restart the game?

fake edit: DXdiag is taking awfully long. I'll post a report once I sort that out.

edit: DXdiag64 will not generate a report for some reason. DXdiag32 will.

Looking at your DXDIAG report, it suggests you have a 2GB variant of the NVIDIA 460.

Windows 7 (and Vista) will hardware reserve ~80-100% of your graphics card RAM in system RAM. Your graphics memory allocation from your report is below:

     Display Memory: 3805 MB
   Dedicated Memory: 2014 MB
      Shared Memory: 1791 MB

You can see here that you're system is reserving 1.791 GB of system RAM purely for your graphics card.

Your symptoms are common, in my experience, when specifying a 2 GB graphics card for a system with 4 GB of RAM.

Please don't rush out and buy more RAM though, incase you have a different underlying issue.

Specifying more swap file won't alleviate this issue.

If you have an alternative graphics card you can use, with 1GB of RAM, that may be a good test.

I'm also not sure that the memory remap feature in some BIOS's will help this issue (incase you've tried this).

I would be really interested if CBJ could comment on this / the way the new GFX improvements in AP v1.1 affect memory addressing with either the graphics RAM or the hardware reserved system RAM. I'm sure this might be a spurious line of inquiry however.

Anyone else got any further thoughts on this?

**EDIT** Just so you know, you have some codecs installed which behave badly with X3(haali, ffdshow etc). I'm sure the Mods will do a much more thorough assessment.

In addition, you have a generic Microsoft sound driver installed. The OEM driver might be a better option.

Sort of correct for 32bit windows. However, this is most assuredly NOT how 64-bit Windows works. Win7 Ultimate 64bit Windows has an User address space of 196 gigabytes, and to top it off, video RAM is re-mapped to the Top of that memory space. So no, Win7 does not reserve system RAM for accessory RAM, it just maps the video card to it's HUGE memory space.

@OP

Is FFDshow set to exclude X3? See sticky at top of page. However, I don't believe this is the source of your issue.

If you add an additional 2GB (or more) of physical RAM X3 will use up to ~3.6-3.7GB, instead of ~3GB. As a 32bit application X is limited to the first 4GB of address space. However your O/S, and other applications can reside in the additional memory, freeing up that 4GB address space for X3?? to use.

You might also try to pare down the amount of memory your O/S and ancillary programs are using. You should be able to free up as much as 200-300MB of memory by either starting msconfig and disabling everything not Microsoft, or opening Task Manager and shutting off the extra stuff.

I'm going to guess you are modified because your Anti-virus doesn't play well with others. You should be able to exclude the X3 directories from you AV software's tentacles. After you exclude X3?? you can re-verify with Steam to get a clean install. However your current savegames will be marked *modified*.

As to whether this is a known issue, I haven't had high memory usage in AP yet, but my current TC game uses 3.6GB after about an hour of play. I can tell because sector changes become slower as the system flushes the game cache. I do not get out of memory errors however.

I've written this as I've read your post. You are going to have to repair your directX install. I don't know if this will solve your issue, but it is a good place to start.

I haven't got a spare VGA card with less VRAM, I suppose I could borrow my girlfriend's GTX560, but that is also a 2GB card. Suggesting X3AP to the IGP seems like a bad idea.

I have excluded Haali and FFDshow etc from messing with X3, I've known that mess since X3R, I assumed AP would be the same so I sorted that before even starting the game the very first time.

As far as it's relevant I run MS Forefront for anti-virus, I've not known it to interfere with programs before, so if that has caused the *modified* tag then so be it. I was planning on modding anyway, so I was just curious if AP games are supposed to be tagged as *modified*

The MS generic sound driver is oddly enough the driver the OEM tells me to install. It's HDCP compliant and so far has never given me trouble, so I'm not complaining about it.

As for killing tasks, there isn't much to be killed. Not counting FF, Steam and Pidgin there are 56 processes running, all of which are either non-descriptive svchosts or driver related stuff.
Currently taskman reports about 1,4GB of RAM being used when the system is idle. Though I am pretty sure that part of that is pre-fetched data to make programs start more quickly.

Mind you I have no issues with slowdown in game, sector transitions take a few seconds, but they do not get noticeably longer.
It's just that after a while windows will alt-tab me out of the game to advice me to close this memory hog. I can continue to play after that, but the message will come back every few minutes.

Upgrading my RAM wasn't in my planning, DDR2 isn't as cheap as it used to be. Considering it's not a part I can carry over into a new system, I'm not that keen on spending money on it.

@Shootist - If you're that confident on the memory addressing issue, then fair enough. My info came from a conversation with a MS consultant onsite, about a similar issue with a corporate app. It is however, not the first time I've had conflicting/ambiguous infomation from individuals at MS (nothing inferred). Your explaination makes sense, so you learn something new every day.

To the OP, fair enough on the sound card issue, it was worth a check.

Regarding your endpoint security (MS Forefront), try excluding your Steam repository or your X3 directory (+subdirectories) from the live scanning. AP isn't modified by default, so MS Forefront has most likely interfered with this, unless you had some mods installed at the time your status changed.

Read up on Kernel and User memory in 32bit Windows. Then compare that to the memory structure of 64bit Windows.

What you described is a memory shortage caused by Windows 32bit re-mapping video RAM to the top 2GB (Kernel) of the 4GB memory space. This can cause a reduction of memory in the lower 2GB of memory space (User). Which is why video cards were generally limited to values up to 768MB. (nvidia 8000 and 9000 series, for example).

To OP, I've been successful reducing my start up memory load to about 800MB in Win7. But I've not yet been able to find the site that had a list of all the unnecessary services that can be disabled. If I find it, I'll post here.

[edit] Oh, and you can kill the Steam processes after you start the game. That will save 50-60MB. When you do, a Steam error server will start and you can safely kill that as well.

[edit2] Here is a list of services that can be disabled, or set to manual, to reduce memory load on start. This list is not exhaustive, but the site I originally referenced appears to have gone to the great bit bucket in the sky.

@ OP: I wouldn't worry about your graphics card, it seems fine for use with Win7 x64 and I wouldn't downgrade it. Make sure you are using x64 sound and graphics drivers and not x32 ones though.

Definitely get a brand-named Win7 HD audio driver for the the sound chipset on your mobo rather than use that default MS one.

If you have disabled Ffdshow for use with both X3TC and X3AP .exe files then you still have Haali. I am unaware of any way to disable Haali for specific files that actually works. I would uninstall the codec pack that probably installed them as you really do not need them.

The most convenient way that I have found to kill unnecessary applications and services when gaming is to download and use the freeware/shareware Game Booster.

Consider fixing your pagefile size by setting both initial and max size to the same value of 6 Gb. X3 is not a good user of dynamic pagefile for some reason. It is easy to put back to OS-managed if you do not like the results.

I need Haali when messing with video for my work, I understand the dislike of this meddlesome mediasplitter, but I don't think it's causing this problem.

The sound driver has no OEM version, there is a Realtek reference driver, but that oddly enough gives me choppy sound in other games. I went back to the MS driver because that seems to work better.

My pagefiles are all fixed in size. There's a tiny 512MB one on C:, the two big ones each have their own partition on the other two physical drives.
It's a habit of mine, I like my swap to be separate from the rest of the files. Letting the OS manage the pagefile will invariably lead to fragmentation, which gleefully kills what little performance the pagefile had to begin with.

Also all my drivers are x64 versions if they're available, for some reason DxDiag64 was being stubborn about generating a report. The report in my initial post probably shows 32 bit drivers because it's the 32 bit version of DxDiag.

I believe this realtek sound driver is a year newer than the one you have installed. It is specific to your motherboard model.

I am aware of this driver, however, like I said earlier it gives me choppy sound. Sound will play fine for a few seconds, then hiccup, then play fine again for a few seconds, then hiccup again etcetera.

Though I have found the root cause of the issue and resolved it. Turns out that this isn't X3AP related, but was an issue in the firmware of one of my hard drives.
The drive would drop into a deep power-saving mode after only 8 seconds and then take too long to wake up again. This caused Windows to think the drive had disconnected.
This in turn made windows reject the pagefile on that drive, leaving the system with only ~500MB of headroom left in the pagefile. Which explains the low memory warning as X3AP nearly takes up all RAM.
Editing the firmware of the hard drive and changing the idle time out from 8 to 300 seconds prevents this.
