I tried the modding forum because this issue related directly to that forum ... it wasn't appriciated ... and otherwise don't see an appropriate place to post. (I'm not a real social person :>)
I don't like the steam versions ... (Of anything) I like the standalone versions because of the ability to use mods and to create scripts and use other people's scripts. Sooooo....
WILL THERE BE A STANDALONE version of Albion Prelude. If so, when. If any of this offends the STEAM folks they need to make their version more compatible with the other Egosoft products, because Egosoft thought all this out very well and for that matter Egosoft makes the ROLLS ROYCE of space sims and the product should be treated with more respect.
If I offend I don't mean to, Egosoft that is, and Valve be dammed, ... but it is very unclear where information like this is dissiminated, or why any product that is so sensitve to the modding community should be chopped up by Valve.
Thanks in advance

I am moving this to the Universe forum where there is a thread similar to your main question 'WILL THERE BE ...'. In short, there will be a DVD version of AP released early this year but it will need to be activated on Steam (and the number and type of methods available for that version to be updated are yet to be fully confirmed I think).
If you want to know how to use 3rd Party mods and scripts with Steam X games then that is an S&M forum question that has been asked many times and there are existing threads there that can easily be found with a bit of Google.

Can you provide a source for that please? I haven't seen an official statement on what the DVD will use yet.Alan Phipps wrote:In short, there will be a DVD version of AP released early this year but it will need to be activated on Steam

Oh and heading it off in advance, do NOT turn this thread into another pro/con Steam debate thread!

For version 2.0 of X3:Albion Prelude, Egosoft is releasing a "no-Steam" executable to registered owners of the game through our online community. Those customers who do not want to have Steam running permanently can simply replace the executable and start the game without the Steam service even being installed.
Because this will remove all additional Steam services, such as the automatic updates and ingame community features, we do not encourage this for everyone. For us, as a small developer, the Steam community is much more than just a distribution platform or protection system; Steam reduces installation and support issues significantly, and adds many online community features for those players who want to enjoy playing an offline game together with a group of like-minded fans.
We do understand that some customers do not want to keep the Steam service permanently installed on their machine. The release of this "no-Steam" executable is, however, a one-time only service and we can not guarantee that this version will be kept up to date in the future.
Customers using this executable will still have to activate the game via Steam once, but can later download the no-Steam exe from our website. To access the executable it will be necessary to register your copy of the game in the Egosoft online community too.

That is why I said what I said above. If the situation changes then Egosoft will let us know, no doubt. When the DVD version comes out it will be 2.0, and at some point thereafter the NoSteam version of the 2.0 executable will be made available to registered users.

The fact that they're working on a no-steam patch at all does make it seem less likely that the game will ship with a more usable DRM but until it's actually announced it's hardly a good idea to tell people that it won't be happening.

You've got statements there saying there's going to be an unsupported patch to remove the steam client requirement from the Steam version of the game when it's updated to 2.0 and another statement saying the DVD version will start at 2.0. Nothing about steam being required for the DVD.When the DVD version comes out it will be 2.0, and at some point thereafter the NoSteam version of the 2.0 executable will be made available to registered users

Thank you so very much
I really am not much of a social nietzen ... never have been. I am trying to learn at bit ... I am 57 and am approaching the time in my life when I have a bit more available time.
I am a programmer and would like to learn more about modding. What do I have to do to raise my level above 3?
Again - thank you for the reply. Do you think we could have a forum or fixed thread that deals with this type of information. (The availablility of versions.) I really would like to know what is required to make AP work with other scripts. IE ... file layout and how steam processes the "addon" folder.
THANKS!!

@ GearHead: But we do have a forum exactly for that called the Scripts and Modding Forum. It has several novice guides and walkthroughs in the Sticky threads there. You should research the basics before posting there and then only post specific questions in your own thread when you know what you want to do or if in relation to specific mods or scripts using their relevant threads. This Universe forum is for vanilla X gameplay and so I am locking this thread now.
@ Neversnake: I answered your specific question as put to me. Why make a no-Steam exe available for use by DVD users if that DVD is not at least partially Steam-dependent? I will not be discussing the topic further here.
