X3: Albion Prelude - Black Screen - Fixed

Hi, I just bought Albion Prelude off steam and after trying to run it, I encounter a black screen when there should be video playing. I can hear the sound, just nothing shows. Except for the loading screen. It will show the "Loading" and after it loads nothing. Just black screen and audio.

I can run X3:TC just fine but for whatever reason X3:AP just won't work. I have tried all sorts of different graphic settings but nothing worked. I have the latest drivers for my graphics card, everything is updated that I can think would play a part.

Any ideas?

Strange that X3TC would work without problem. One thing is the ffdshow codecs which have been known to cause problems. More info on what you can do about that here.

So, other than the loading screens, nothing shows? Intro videos? Main Menu? What happens if you try to start a new game by pressing 'enter' twice once the main menu has loaded?

I'll try and see if i have that ffdshow codec, but after trying to start a new game i hear that video with the girl breathing but i see just a black screen and then the loading screen appears again, of which i can see. After the loading screen X3 crashed.

EDIT: I disabled the ffdshow codec but it still shows the black screen and will crash when i hit enter-enter to start a new game.

When you played X3:TC was it modified? as in mods installed there's a few people reported that it cause's issue's for AP.

Soon after I installed AP I had a similar issue. Showed vanilla but was corrupted and my guess is that it corrupted due to game crashing (my hardware was not healthy at that time). Deleting local content and doing another Steam install fixed. In my case running scandisk was needed too.

You have X3-unfriendly ULead and Haali codecs. Also I am unsure whether your onboard graphics chipset is borderline for the capability to run X3 (I know you said TC runs OK though).

I fixed it, after reading glens post I thought maybe my TC or AP install was corrupted so I did a integrity check and that caused AP to download about 300mb of files and after it finished it was working fine. So it must have just had a bad install for what ever reason.

So, I know this is an older post but I had this issue and I did some looking and came across this.

I had previously had XRM mod installed, thought I had deleted all the game files for a clean install, but I missed a few because I'm a moron at times... but aren't we all?

Anyway, I wen into steamapps/common and deleted the X3TC game folder completely and this resolved my issue. there were still around 800 mb of mod files left that upon a clean install cause havoc on the games hud.

Anyway, I hope this helps anyone else out there having a boneheaded forgetful time like I did!
