A second Chance to screw up [DiDs]

Post by RyuKazuha »

[Setup]

X-tended Terran Conflict, Medium Difficulty, Argon Emigrant Start

[unnecessary babble]

So I'll do it again. This time as a first play through, or into, the XTC-Mod. I hope I'll last long enough to entertain you guys, as well as providing some insight into the mod.

[Let's get started]

My name is Matthew Kotaka. Most of my friends call me Matt. Well, they used to. Now they're either dead or somewhere the sun never shines. See, that's the problem of being firiends with a bunch of thieves, con artists, burglars and pirates. When it ends, it ends bad and in my case, it ended really bad.

In theory, the whole thing was foolproof. Some of us would employ themselves as guards to a convoy, receiving half of the payment in advance. Others would provide Pirates with intel on the transport and the third group would lay an ambush for the ambushing pirates.

The pirates ambush the convoy, the guardians make a run for it. While the pirates plunder, they are surprised what seems to be the returning mercs with reinforcements. The convoy has fallen victim to pirates, the pirates are gone for good and we get everything, everone's happy.

Well, that'd be, if you work with guys able to control what drives them: greed. The theory is all good, but it breaks when some of those involved decides to turn in survivors for bounty, to "raise profits".

Before long, someone gets a call from prison and you find yourself on the black list of a pirate clan. Moreover your name "mysteriously" connects with the lost convoy and bounty hunters swarm you like flies the shit.

Your only way out of this mess is a one way trip to hell. So here I am.

YES! A Xtended Terran Conflict DiD, good luck with it. It seems to be even better than your previous DiD's/FF.

There are basically two ways to disappear from the screen of your pursuers. You either change your ships ID, or the whole ship. To me it has proven handy, to store an old, ragged up fighter in a junkyard way off the trade routes. While an asteroid would make for a good short term storage to, it's just to probable that some illegal miner will stumble upon it.

You crash your ship into the next 'roid, spacewalk through the junk and hope your piece of scrap metal is still there, able to get you out of the mess. And because you don't want a shiny new Nova floating about unattended, the piece of scrap metal is nothing younger than a first generation Elite.

Crossing a couple of dozen systems in your barely 100m/s "fast" trashcan makes you think about one question: Why the hell didn't I just kill myself?
This may be influenced by realizing, that anything you've with you are 100 Credits cash and a couple of emergency rations, while your legal and illegal deposits are closed off by either a clan leader or a corporation.

Life's harsh, unfortunately I don't believe it'll get any better after death.

Neither side of Pandora's Gate is a place you'd want to be for too long. Most unfriendly Terran Military set aside, approaching the Gate is like approaching a highest security prison You don't know exactly whats behind, but you're quite sure you'll never come back out. Ever.

Once you're through, the tension rises. I had enough time to read the news, detailing the cold war situation, but seeing how Argon Citizens, wich I pretend to be, are treated out here, the war isn't cold, it's freezing.

Encouraged to leave by the Terran Military, the path leads north through a TOA, to Collins, fomerly know simply as "the rock". Small forces of the Aldrin Self Defense Forces are on patrol here, but nothing else is going on, so I turn west, through another TOA into the Howard 'roid Field. Nothing to say about it though. Rocks'n'roids, nothing interesting, though Colossi are a familiar sight.
I travel west, to the Shattered Dreams Gate and take peek into the System wich has been cleared of Xenon and resettled, but a burning planet isn't where I like to spend my holydays, so I turned back, than North and reached Aldrin.

After several Hours of empty, dark, lifeless space, it's quite a shock to enter Aldrin. Blinded by the shiny blue pearl I feel remembered of my first visit in the Boron Home System.
Two superstructures are fighting for Domination over the visitors Attention, first being the #deca, and second the new build flagship of the Free State, the Leviathan Battleship.
However, it seems most of Aldrins Economy is still planetary based and I need a job in space. So I turn West locking onto the Gate leading to the promising Colony of New Horizons.

New Horizons has a thriving economy, well, it looks like. A constantly empty SSP usually indicates that. As far as I remember base rules for trading, Energy is always a good start, as it is cheap and easily nets profits over 50%.
Trying to find a full SSP I decide to go north to Naos Nihall and find three SSPs filled to the brim. I'd say jackpot, but lets face it, a jackpot would be a fully equipped and manned M2 for no cash. It's however good enough to profit from and make sure I won't starve to death.

Returning to NH, it's only a matter of finding the right customer, but with Crystal Forges there's a good chance to find empty stock. The second try is a hit. Looks like I'll do some more shipments...

There are two things I really need: Money and a Ship worth of calling it so. The second will come with the first, provided I get a better standing with the local authorities.

So let's see. Like in the inner Regions, the Argon are happy friends with the fishys and give Three-eyes a frosty glare. They hate our Terran brothers and are united with the Aldrin People in that, if anything.
Split still like to eat fish. Terrans hate anything nonhuman and unwilling to join their "democracy", so... everyone. The Teladi do everything for they own gain and them pirates do, what pirates do.

Guess I'll stick to the Argon and Boron for the Moment, until I'm able to compete with the lizards. As of now the most profit they'll gain of me is by selling my ass to a split mining company.

My quest for cheap energy led me deep into boron territory and even at the edge of the Expansion Region. Necessary Tribute was the last sector not reached by professionel Energy traders, so I got to make a few thousand credits from running E-Cells around, until the first professional emptied the whole stock with a single purchase.
Leaving the sector behind I traveled to Aspiring Hope, onter Boron Colony at the edge of known space to increase cargo space at the local EQ-Dock. Taking a load of energy cells from the local SSP I began to make my way back to New Horizons.

Trying to make money by trading with an outdated M3 is tedious and slow, but it's also safe and has the advantage of building trust with the factions you trade with.
Making money by ... more martial means is usually faster, but besides the risk of getting killed, most of the time you make yourself enemies instead of friends. And enemies are something you don't need, if you fly a rusty can like I do.

Trading with a small Fighter requires a lot of traveling and attention, first to find promising opportunities, second to avoid any kind of situation wich is about to endanger your bank account.

A Xenon Patrol consisting of a Q and several fighter is that kind of situation, but sometimes you just can't get past trouble without receiving some blows. And since I havn't the materials to repair the ship, I'm know bound to crawl with just 80m/s in a ship thats as rusty as it is dented.
The OTAS-Mechanics in Sirius III estimated the damage at eight to nine thousand credits.

And to make the whole thing even more frustrating, I stumbled across a pair of Photon Maser Cannons, capital weaponry worth enough to buy a fighter wing and - unfortunately - L-classed cargo, so it won't fit through the tailboard.
I really considered spacewalking them to the EQ-Dock, but Cargo Crates tend to break apart when entering a gates event horizon. At last, I allowed myself at least the fun to take away from others, what I couldn't get myself and destroyed the weapons.
Consolation was nearby in form off several wasp and moskito type missiles.
Hopefully they'll net enough to at least get the ship back up on full speed.

[Some info outside of the story: XTC introduces a new system of ware classes, ranging from Tiny to Station wich is somewhat tied to the Ship Classes roughly as following:
T-Class: M5
S-Class: M4
M-Class: M3
L-Class: M6
XL-Cass: M7
XXL-Class M2
ST-Class for TL

Freighters of Course deviate from this a bit of course. How this affects the ships equipment will be displayed later.]

Still not enough money to repair the damn ship. To push income, I started to take on small scale Convoy Defense Missions through Core Sectors. Most of the time the Freighters are able to defeat any attackers themselves or the Police will take them out, resulting in easy money for me, as long as I stay out of the trouble. Station Defense Missions would be another source of such income, at least if I'd find them, but it seems the expansion region is just to peaceful right now.

This may be due to the way the new colonies of the races are distributed throught the expansion region. Argon, Boron and Terran colonies are found west of Solara, the Colonies of Teladi, Split and Paranids to the east. Devided by the Free State of Aldrin, there's not much potential for war as of now, and pirates are still a rare sight.
GalNetNews just reported about a second wave of expansion. Let's see what is to be found in the new sectors.

I guess the game just doesn't like me. Explored the new sectors of the Argon. When I reached Gemini and saw a freighter blowing up right in front of me I started to realize how bad the day was going to end.

Considering the shock wave brought my shields down and I was the only target left for a LX and a PX to shoot at, it was a small miracle I even survived long enough to even hope to reach the event horizon with my pesky little piece of junk, before I got to face Mr. Scythe.

Game over after only 7 Entries. Take it as granted, that XTC is much less forgiving than TC is itself.

Since I don't want to quite this just yet, I'll change perspectives to a young Teladi female. Her reason for coming into the expansion region being a went wrong deal you've already heard about.

Did you turn off the buggy shock wave effect plugin?

Its a known issue. If you didnt and it was the freighters shock wave that dropped your shields, then I offer a reload.

No I didn't , but considering I was blown up by a missile able to take out the ship even with its full 5mw shield, it didn't really matter anyways.

And tbh choosing between a new start getting back into this elite, Well...

[Writers Comment]

I think I'll return to the third person narrative for this one, since I get somewhat tired of the Log-Entries.

[A second chance to screw up: Firaxis]

[Chapter I: Dept]

Firaxis found herself in one of the situations most Teladi tried to avoid at all cost: Tied up she was dragged before another of her species she had ripped off some time before.
While fraud was seen as an art, as well as viable means of making money among her kinde, the least Teladi were pleased to stand at the wrong end of it.

"Hieris Sinassis Firaxis the Third." she was welcomed with false warmth, wich seemed misplaced as her hands were still tied behind her back. "I am really pleassed to see you. I hope you had an enjoyable trip."
The lizard facing her was the infamous mixture of the trained fighters and a normal Teladi citizen. His face scarred and his scaled pane severely damaged, disabling a lot of potential for nonverbal communication, he wasn't a delightful sight at all. Unimmaginable greed and hatred glittered in the dark red of his eyes, making Firaxis cringe, as her eyes rose.

The fist of one of the split mercenaries working for the Teladi brought firaxis to her knees, barely kept from falling over by the Humans who had brought her here. The second punch struck her richt cheek, a third at her breast took the womans breath away, nearly sending her into a coma.

The Teladi rose his hand to stop the torture from advancing. Firaxis didn't even try to raise her head. Opposition held no profit in her current situation, so she just had to endure.
"I really wanted to congratulate you for thiss plan. It wass ssimple, yet effective. I'd probably assk you to be my bride if you'd pulled that off on ssome other." Firaxis couldn't help but to feel flattered. Of course this resulted in some more punches covering her face and upper body.
"Unfortunately, you picked me, Issemados Sissandras Sibasomos the Seventeenth. You'll undersstand I can't let this go unnotissed, even if I'd like to." the Teladi kept on talking. Every time he paused more than half a second, Firaxis was again beaten by the split, who seemed to enjoy torturing a helpless woman.
"However, the amount of money you sstole me iss in fact the ssole reasson for you sstill being alive." A glass was filled with Space Fuel and given to Sibasomos XVII.
"I'll give you a chance to pay back, what you've sstolen. I have allready taken everything you've got, but unfortunately it didn't cover your dept completely." The Teladi laughed. "Sso here'ss the deal. You'll pay me 10 Million within the next month and I'll conssider letting you walk free." A gesture stopped the beating and freed Firaxis of her chains.
"10 Million." she replied, slightly gauging her wounds while she stood up. "Exactly. You'll even get the shipss my employeess caught you with." A freighter and a scout. Better than nothing our heroine thought. "I'm very generouss Ssweetie, but if you try to **** with me again, you'll be laying eggss for the resst of your life. Did I make myself clear on that?"
Just the thought of this made Firaxis gag. "Very clear." she replied while fighting for her composure. "Fine. You're free to go then."

Free to go. As free as one was on the false side of the Pandora Gate. Being brought to Atropos II, Firaxis knew she would have to stay in the Expension Region for some time. Navigating the maze of terran bureaucracy would cost considerable amounts of money and unforseeable amounts of time, as most terrans were probably fond of the idea to contain the "aliens" between a gate they could shut down at will.
At least the ships given to her offered a positive surprise. While she remembered flying a scout when being caught, she was equiped with her private Interceptor "Creditor" and the Vulture "Nividium Horizon", inheritance from her mother.

[Chapter II: Unexpected]

Reviewing supply and demand withing the sectos economic setup, Firaxis found herself bored. Any "old-as-dirt"-trading rule applied to it, with many stations longing for energy and a solar power plant filled to the brim, the onky thing needed to make a fortune was a freighter to harvest the profits.
"What a wasssste." Firaxis thought, seeing her bank account reduced to mere tenthousand credits where millions should have been.Quitely swearing she vowed not to work with people again who'd endanger serious profit for some thousand credits more.

However, grief was nothing to further profits. She had to go on, learn from the past and otherwise let it go, as her main goal had to be assembling the cash she needed to pay out Sibasomos. Ten Million Credits in thirty days. Not the most challenging of all things.

Ordering the "Nividium Horizon" to the local solar power plant, the Teladi opened a GalNet-Connection to get an overview on the political situation surrounding her.
Apparently all her old contacts to and notoriety with the other races had ceased and she was uncertain if that was due to her presumed death in the old colonies, or if Sibasomos had used his influence to make sure she wouldn't get any help from old connections to escape the expansion region and thus his grip on her.
The attempt to contact one of her old friends via ExtraNet failed, as private bandwith of the ExtraNet was not transmitted through Pandora's Gate. "Damn you."

While using the "Nividium Horizon" as a Manually Operated Remote Trader (MORT), the Teladi started to explore her Races new first Colonies in the Expansion Region, consisting mainly of the multi sector star system Atropos, some minor planets and one deep space asteroid field.

When she was finished exploring, Firaxis had allready managed to assemble 150.000 Credits and a good amount of notoriety, and employed her M4 to ship Swanp Plants between a local farm and a bliss place.
She also bought a ragged up Harrier on the fly, selling it like it was to the Atropos Shipyards for some thousand credits profit and being somewhat of a gambler, Firaxis decided to invest the effortlessly won money into the GalNet lottery.

The two thousand one hundred and fourtyfour credits turned out to have be invested wisely just a couple of mizuras ago, when the ticket turned out to contain winning numbers. A lot of them actually.

Firaxis fizzle with joy. "Let'ssss ssssee how much it'll be in thirty dayssss." she said to herself. Time to employ some less lucky lizards.

Actually, were you planning the pan-galatic trading empire style DiD? If so, you've pretty much eliminated the boring startup phase.

I havent played XTC long enough to know how dangerous the trading lanes are. Are you thinking of more MORTS?

Currently I try to figure out how to invest the millions most efficiently. The Character of Firaxis is suitable to both Trading Empire and Pirate Admiral Style gaming, but tbh I'm a bit overwhelmed with this sudden rain of money. I usually use the "boring" game start to fully figure out the lead character and adjusting the games style to his experiences.

I'll have to examine the economic system, ship and station prices more closely before I decide on anything.

[Chapter III: Baseline]

Firaxis, even though driven by natural greed , wasn't someone to make a move hastely. Except for opportunities with a certain time limit of course. Examning the economy again, she found to things to be thoroughly lacking. The first being freighters to carry around goods, the second beeing Nostrop Oil, as refineries and flower farm where devided by several Sectors.

Several beeps indicating an incoming connection turned Firaxis' attention to the ComScreen. "Accept." A bluish green colored Teladi appeared on the screen. From the looks of it, he was sitting in a ship manufactured by the Split.
"Hello Missssss. I wasssss told to deliver thisssss Caiman Sssssuperfreighter to you. It wasssss part of your Lottery winningsssss."
Firaxis' knitted her brows. "Why do I get the feeling I know you?" she asked bluntly. "I reckon because you do. But it seems the masquerade works, if even you won't recongnize me." Firaxis narrowed her eyes. Not taking the colour into account, this guy looked like. "Assasis?"
The Teladi grinned. "I go by another name now, but yesssss, it'sssss me." he replied. "What are you doing here? Don't tell me thiss meeting isss by chance." "Maybe I kind of paid the pilot to get hisssss job. I heard about you being taken here, ssssso I desssssided to meet you."
Firaxis' smiled. Her head clearly showed delight, as well as her counterparts did. "Let'sssss talk thisssss in Perssssson. I'll dock at the shipyard."

Some minutes later, the Teladi met at a bar located near the shipyards docks. Shady and filled by the smell of Space Weed, it made for a great place of reunion.
"I hadn't hoped to meet any acquaintance over here." Firaxis said, ordering drinks and weed at the same time. "Actually there's quite a lot of us around in the Expansion Region." her friend replied. "Some days after the Crimson Scale was dismembered and you disappeared, the Yaki launched an attack on an assembly of clan leaders in Hatikvah's Faith. The pirate queen and many clan leaders were killed. Pirate alley is no longer unified to say the least." he reported what Firaxis had missed. "Some of the smaller clans and most freelancers retreated from pirate alley and a good portion of them made it here. It isn't long before the fight for territories in the Expansion Region will start, but right now the situation hasn't ignited."
Firaxis wasn't pleased about what she heared, even though she somehow had to reevaluate her abduction to the Expansion Region. However, past was past. "So what are you doing right now?"
"Nothing worth talking about. You know I'm more of a organizer, not a mastermind."
Firaxis smiled. "I get the picture." she answered. "Consider yourself hired. I think it's time to reinvent the Crimson Scale." "Cheers." The Teladi clinked glasse, before the male resumed speaking. "So what do you plan on doing next?"
"I've the funds to build some stations. I'm not certain on wich I'll open up, but I think about an Oil-Refinery in Mutual Benefits and some kind of mine to use as an out of the way HQ." Firaxis explained. "The rest of the funds I gathered will support a fleet of freighters. A legal faccade will be helpfull as well as profitable. We're no longer on pirate alley, are we?" "Sounds good. I know a TL captain who still owes me, so cheap transport won't be a problem. However, I reviewed your ratings in the Company and I've to say you've not enough notriety to buy freighters just yet." Firaxis raised her eyebrow. "Part me? I'm allowed to purchased stations, but no Freighters?" "The region is still in development. The Company wants to settle industries and lure in traders from the Core Region, so they restricted access to freighters, making the companies more dependant on free traders."
Firaxis wasn't really pleasured by the fought of building a company dependant on Free Traders, but for the Time being it was the only way. "Fine. We've got two freighters at our disposal, enough to support the needs of an Oil Refinery. I'll try to buy some used ships to bypass the prohibition two. Find us a nice spot to set up a mine. I want an HQ until we can afford something better. But don't waste my money on some useless roid. It may very well be, that we need some of its products. I'll file the Papers necessary to found Crimson Scale Incorporated."

The next hours and days were desginated to the Corporations Setup. A large Sun Oil Refinery was transported to Mutual Benefits and constructed right above the main Trade Lane near the Flower Farms and the local SSP, but not to far from the North Gate to shorten the distance to other Solar Powerplants in the nearby Sectors.
A Silicon Mine was constructed on an average (36) yield Asteroid in Atropos VI to hold the temporary Headquarters of the Crimson Scale. Far to the Northeast it was well away from the traffic to be used as a base of pirate activity later on.
The "Nividium Horizon" as well as the "Golden Flower" and the "Profiteer" - a where equiped with advanced Trading Software (Mk2), homebased to the Refinery and tasked with buying Ressources as well as selling Products.
At least the Stations Account was stocked with 500.000 Credits, more than enough, and adjusted to transfer any profit raising the account over this value directly to Firaxis's Personal account.
To lure in walk-in customers, the price for direct sale was set just some credits below the average.

The Mine remained untouched, until the next notoriety update finally allowed Firaxis to buy new freighters directly from the shipyard. 7 Vulture Hauler Variants where then affored outfitted and crewed to fulfill there purpose as trading ships.
Firaxis ordered them to be homebased to the Mine, in order to deny them access to her personal account, and rather using the Stations as an intermediate. She transferred five Million Credits to the Mine, capping it's account at the double. At last, every of the Trade Ships was sent to one of the seven Teladi Sectors currently established in the Expansion Region.

[Comment:

XTC changes many things considering gameplay, like the notoriety needed to purchase freighters. But the basic rules of trade still apply.

Concerning Stations: Fulfill demand and make use of overproduction to maximize your profit.
Build closed Loop Complexes is considered the best by many X-Players, but in the starting phase, where you need to look at your funds, they are just unnecessarily expensive.
If their is demand and if there are resources around that your station needs, freighters buying resources and selling products will perfectly do and net you a nice profit.

Concerning Sector Traders: I personally do like to use them, but I don't like to get stripped of my funds by them buying some expensive shit. The solution is simple. Homebase them to a station (in the story its the mine) and they'll use the stations funnds instead of your personal account. Fluctuation on your account will be considerably less doing that, making it easier to plan new investments.
Just be cautious to raise the Stations Accountcap, if you employ more Sector Traders to keep them all funded.
