Question on DiD's

I am thinking of starting my own DiD, but not sure I want to start a new game for it. I have died plenty in my current game, and reloaded without consequence aside from losing a bit of progress.

I have plans to keep it interesting and, from this point forward, would follow the rules of the standard DiD, but am curious as to what you guys thought.

Also, is it "against the rules" to allow something that while not technically possible ingame, to be apart of the story? If I wanted something that my character did to happen that is reasonable, but not possible ingame, is that against DiD rules?

I have read quite a few DiD stories already out have yet to find one that I didn't get sucked into and enjoy reading. So am hoping to create my own, both to share my experiences in the X-Universe and to hopefully entertain a few readers.

This area is about more than just DiD - so if you want to write about something not possible in-game, just go for it! :) Before DiD started to take off, the Creative Universe was populated by lots of things that couldn't be described by the game engine...

There is 'Vanilla' DiD, and Modded 'DiD'. It wasn't 'technically' possible to play a Xenon, but I managed, and it was fun too! Try not to modify the game or allow exploits that make it easy to gain assets, money, or reputation.

There was a recent DiD that started with the 'Lucky Heir' game start, and the character made their money mobile mining Nvidium. The character basically had huge assets, unlimited money, and good rep, so why even play?

The best DiD's (IMHO) have a intresting character telling the tale. In the case of 'Teladi Super Trader' (or something along those lines) the main character (A Teladi TL Captain high on spaceweed) had me rolling in my seat. It barely conformed to the 'traditional' DiD framework, but it was really amusing to read.

Thanks for the responses, I went ahead and started a new game with some DiD rules, just because it sounded a bit more rewarding then the way I had been playing.

I have a little back story for my character, but my writing abilities aren't that great so not sure if I will narrate this or not, will see how it goes.

From my personal experience, its best if you write in first person, past tense.

All machines are made to break.

Now all I had to do was convince the frigate it was escorting of the same thing ...

Posting chapters as a recollection / recap sounds too much like a captain's log. It's concise, but rather dull. Sometimes it fits the character (An Armchair Admiral for example) but action filled are more exciting. Just don't get lost in the details, and highlight the best / most unusual portions of that play session.

There are basically two types of DiD-Games. The first is more like a game log, the second is a narrative. Both can be quite entertaining, but they differ largly from each other.

The "Game-Log"-Variant is, like the name implies, a reproduction of what really happened in the game. Since the Engine likes to produce quite entertaining things, it won't become boring if you don't describe every single step, but just "slide" over the more boring parts and describe the fun ones more in detail.

The "Narrative"-Variant is the more creative approach. Here, what happens ingame is still told, but it's more of a base, rather than the sole content. In this type of DiD characters aside from the main character may show up or you get some scenes in-station, wich are not possible to play. Also some things may be described somewhat different from how they really happened. (e.g. in my DiD the character steals a advanced perseus from paranid military research center, since there's nothing like that really in game, I instead collected the abandoned advanced perseus in the system)

Your decision what variant you want to write may be influenced by your style of playing the game. If you play it more like a simulator, you may prefer the "game log", if you like the roleplaying aspects, you might prefer the "Narrative".

Whatever you choose, there will be some guys who enjoy reading it, and if you're lucky they even post something. *g*

I think I am gonna give it a go, I appreciate the guidance. I think I got too caught up in rules when they are really guidelines at most. If nothing else I think it will enhance my game play, add a bit more depth to it.

In my DID I TRIED to setup a separate in game company with a back-story of how I got the assets that I did but it didn't go so well. I started out doing a story based one but so far its started to evolve into a narrative of my experience instead. Also going to finish the plots before I start another DID, see what happens then.
