Post by Blade168 »

Custom maps are often part of mods. But these maps are often not usuable without the mod they're coming with, because they may use objecs only available with the mods.

I've seen posts here in the forum that offer custom maps, but I can't remember exactly what these were. (Wasn't it something like Pogi's?) Maybe someone else remembers....

And of course there are such tools as XeHonk's GalaxyEditor and Orca's XUniverseWizard - Random universe generator. These tools are designed for generating random universe maps.

It's hard to find custom maps, your best bet is to generate your own!

If u only need to edit the existing universe (like modifing the existent sectors) you can use the ingame galaxy editor, when u start the editor it will load the X universe and u can modify that map (as for adding new sectors that arent in X universe i think its more complicated and i think the links that Chris Gi gave are more suitable in ur case, in particular the random universe generator).
I remember i read some threads about how to add new sectors to X universe but i cant remember where ...

EDIT: BTW to use the galaxy editor u must first enable it and the prob is that i forgot how to enable it (i dont play x2 anymore , havent playied for a long time now, playing x3 so i forgot)

To enable the in-game Galaxy Editor, you need to type "Thereshallbewings" in the main menue. You won't hear a sound or anything, but if you did it right, there's a new entry in the Start-Menue.

The in-game Galaxy Editor can only edit maps if the physical file is in the [X2-directory]/maps folder. The original map doesn't exist in this folder, it''s inside those dat files.

I extracted it and you can get it from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/205939341/x2_Original.zip

You can't add new sectors to a map with the in-game Galaxy Editor. Adding new sectors can be a pain. It's very easy to add a sector to an existing map (with either XeHonk's Galaxy Editor or the galaxy editor that comes with X2Editor, or you can even use a text editor, if you know the syntax of the xml-file). But you need a t-file that contains the names of the new sectors, a small script that loads the text into the game. And you need a new model for the in-game galaxy map. There is an in-game galaxy map with all 300 sectors available (look at the stickies), but it uses a 2D layout (laid out in rows and columns). A real 3D layout like the original galaxy map is possible but has to be modeled just like ships.

You mean extracting the galaxy map from the cat/dat's?

With tools like those offered at Doubleshadow's Site you can easily do it yourself. But unless you want the galaxy map for X3, there's no obvious use in extracting these files. X3 uses different ships, factories and so on, that X2 doesn't know of. I don't know if these maps are loadable.

If you still want them, and don't want to it on your own, just say so, and I will upload the maps..

Code: Select all

wasn't it something like "makeanapplepiefromscratch" or something?
This is the code for X3. In X2, "Thereshallbewings" work both for the SE and GE. The only difference is where to type the code - in flight for SE, in the main menu for GE.

Interesting. I think carl sagan said that you can't make an applie pie unless you can make the universe. That's from one of those quotes in x2.
