Scout for Enemies Command returning blank messages

Post by JFJohnny5 »

Whenever one of my scouts sees an enemy while running the "Scout for Enemies" command, it sends me a blank message from Unknown and all I can do is click OK. I verified this by buying a brand new Disco then telling it to Dock at a station and tell me when it completed its command. I received a normal message telling me it had finished what it was doing after it docked. I then set it to patrol in Elena's fortune. After a couple minutes of SETA it spotted an enemy and I received a blank message. Now here's the really weird part - I then told it to dock once again (still set to tell me when an order is completed) and now even THAT message is coming back blank. Every single scout I give this command to develops this issue. They report blank messages upon sighting enemies and any further order completed messages form them are also blank. Is this a known bug?

I only have a few scripts running (or even installed for that matter):
Community Plugin Config, Command Queue, and Improved Boarding by Cycrow
Factory Complex Constructor by Dusty
Military HUD by Ulfius
Universal Best Buy/Sell by alex2069

Nothing that touches the scout command that I can think of...

After some more testing I have narrowed down the bug. So long as I do not change the name of the M5 it works fine. But if I change the ship's name to anything other than "Your Ship Name" it returns a blank message from "Unknown" whenever an enemy is seen.

I've had a similar issue with my traders which I always rename when I get them. I will try and experiment and see if this is the same issue, but from different commands.

And I have narrowed it down even further. If I rename the ship to anything with brackets in the name [NameHere] it will start delivering blank messages. But if I rename it without the brackets, it's fine. So it doesn't appear to be the command but more accurately something with brackets in the name. Any quasi-official comments on this bug? Can others verify the issue?

If that's indeed the only issue then it isn't a bug--you're simply not allowed to use square brackets in ship names (CBJ said this in response to another thread some time ago). It may well be a bug that the game actually lets you do so, though!

the message log doesn't allow certain characters, like coloured names or squar brakcets [].

so if you try to put these in your ships name and that name is then used in a log message for something, then you will jsut get an empty message as it cant format the message correctly

Alright. I understand now. So does that mean we'll never be able to use colored name scripts again? The property list can get so cumbersome without some visual organization...

Thats the same conclusion I came to. Bit annoying though, can't see why there should be an issue with it.
