[X2] Is 'script' a dirty word?

Post by Andyf »

Right, so I started playing x2 again, after ages away. Up until, I never used scripts, for various reasons:
1) Couldn't be bothered to get it all installed, learn how to use, etc.
2) Its just.. well.. 'messy' somehow. Not quite sure what I mean by that, but you get the gist. Certainly its nice to have a 'clean' installation
3) A lot of scripts seem a bit, well, cheaty I guess.

Anyway this bonus pack of 'signed' scripts (what does that mean praytell?) came up after I stopped playing, so I was thinking about giving it a go. Particularly as just today I realised I hadn't heard from my sector traders for a while, saw they were all having a tea break, set them back to work, and have since been inundated with messages telling me they've got stuck. Urg.

So anyways, script related- questions:

-do most people use them?

-How 'cheaty' are they?

-Are similar ones going to 'fight' (say if two different scripts both try to control how my fac mantas are operating)?

-There seem to be two turret ones (Aegis and Gunnery Crew Turret), whats the difference and do they fight each other?

-Everyone seems to be going on about UTs, I am feeling maybe they are pushing the boundaries of free-money-per-player-input (and yes, I know I can just not use them!), but I could do with my bleedin STs not annoying me every 2 minutes. (Speaking of which, I seem to remember someone going on about STs being able to go above level 10, but whatever, mine never do).

Err.. yeah thats loads of questions already! Sorry for the speil! Cheers for any help!

Signed scripts do not mark your game as modified. In X², the modified marker was rather intrusive - the word MODIFIED got watermarked onto the top-left of your screen, and it was ALWAYS there.

Unsigned scripts (or just activating the script editor) will mark your game as modified.

Thankfully there's a mod out there that mods out the modified tag

Anyway, this really belongs in the relevant scripting forum :)

The bonus pack scripts are just normal scripts made by the community that egosoft have choosen to signed so they dont require a modified game.

Generally, these scripts have been tested to prevent any bugs, and deemed to be balanced in the current game.

No, but alot do, script users are still in the minority. There are still ppl around who beleive scripting is bad without reallying knowning anything about it.
Andyf wrote:-How 'cheaty' are they?
scripts can do alot of different things, anda lthou some scripts are specifically diesigned for cheating, not all of them are like that. So this really depends on the script in question and your own prespective on what is cheating
Andyf wrote:-Are similar ones going to 'fight' (say if two different scripts both try to control how my fac mantas are operating)?
Again, this depends on the script and what it does, there can be certain conflicts between scripts.

but many scripts can do things with a single object without conflicting. IE, you can have multiple scripts all running on your fac.

Aegis is now part of the bonus pack for X3, im not sure about the other. IT might just be the unsigned version

Also remember that both ST's and UT's were originally scripts released by the community. The first part, the ST's were added in a later patch and the UT was added to the bonus pack

i would say use the scripts. there are some excellent ones out there. even for X2. although they are harder to find than X3 scripts as not many people play X2 anymore and so the host sites for the scripts are disappearing at a rate of knots!

there are some people out there though who are trying to keep as many of the popular/good scripts available to us.

if you lookin got some recommendations, just ask. :D i cant think what i have installed off the top of my head, but i shall have a look and post em here if you like.

edit: ive found the list im running at the moment. they are as follows:

the bonus package
marks 3 scripts (patrol, wing & resupply)
cws turret defence
xai-corp automining
buyraregoods
sat. early warning system
xai-corp advance combat ai
xai-corps towing device
burineks laser and economy rebalance - a mod

thats all i have running just now. and they all work together without conflicts. he sez lol :D
