X-online is essentially just an idea. There is no working code of any kind, nor will there be for many years it seems.

I am a very dedicated player of both the X series and EvE online. Both do the same genre in a different way and both are very very good at what they do.
X is all about the ability to be able to truly build your own empire, complete with station loops, AI fleets, and the ability to really customize the game through community created content. And a big bit of it's appeal is the 'in cockpit' gameplay and twitch combat.
EVE is all about social interaction on a grand scale. It forces you to work together with other players to really accomplish grand feats.
For those who have not played EVE, the gameplay is much different from X, you do not 'directly' controll your ship. You can have as many ships as you want but you can only control one ship at a time, and while you can 'steer' your ship where ever you choose, most of the game involves clicking on objects and choosing to perform a task on them, such as Right Click on an Enemy -> Lock Target -> Commence Firing. Combat is figured mathematically based on your weapons tracking speed, optimum range, the targets transversal velocity relative to your ship and so on.
Also you cannot 'own' real estate in EVE. All refining, production, ship fitting, etc. is done at NPC stations. In order to build an outpost (like a station but with limited capabilities) requires a concerted effort among an alliance of hundreds of players, tens of billions of isk (money) and months of planning and support. Great game, but very much different from X for several reasons.
The X-Universe in its present incarnation is not really viable as an MMO. EVE consists of over 5000 individual star systems each with dozens of stations/planets/moons/asteroid belts and even with a limited ability to establish real estate most people would say that it feels crowded. Try to imagine 100k + people building stations all over the game universe with their own fleet of support ships and defenders and well you can see how that would very quickly bog down even the most advanced of server farms. If you take away the ability to build empires, X ceases to be X.
Not to mention the fast paced, joystick driven gameplay. Hell it lags out playing single player taking a fleet into a Xenon sector, I can't imagine what it'd be like with 3 player factions and 3 times as many ships with a crappy connection lol.
I have always said that the best way to implement multiplayer for X (and it wouldn't be that big of a technical leap) is to just write multiplayer support for it and release a server version, along with some easy to use dev tools and leave it open for small community supported persistent world servers, ala Neverwinter Nights and similar games. You get a good server with a 64 concurrent player limit and a player base of a hundred or two and with the X architecture you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and an MMO. Plus you wouldn't lose the ability to own real estate, and since it's all community supported the server admins could run whatever 3rd party mods they wanted on their server making for some real variety in gameplay.
Maybe I'm crazy, but that's what I'd do.

Actually I think if you go to "Search" and scroll down to "Online Universe" and just look down at "newest" - there are plenty of threadsVaygr wrote:I've gotta ask a very prolly stupid question , I've searched and haven't found anything relevant so here goes (/hides from flaming)

Is there - no
Will there ever be - who knows
The popular opinion is that it's in a Egosoft's long term plans... or something
EDIT: someone moved the thread right before I posted the reply... and I think my post went into the twilight zone or something... It looked weird

Yeah, I've seen this site two some years ago. And it's has as much info as it did then. That site doesnt convey a strong feeling that they(Egosoft) are marching towards that game. And a lot of things I've read here, usually started with "there's a possibility...", "I think..." and what notmoggy2 wrote: It's not just popular opinion

I need facts to believe that it's not just a popular opinion

Unless, everyone here got together and decided to keep me in the dark
