Trans-atmospheric fighter (wip)
This started off as a quicky the other night:
[ external image ]
Wasn't particularly happy with it, but I liked the basic design... so I carried on:

And here's where I'm at now:

Reminds me slightly of a WW2 fighter...

I'd like to see it with the wing mounted guns flowing over in bigger curved gunpods which themselves would be semi part of the wings along the guns' axis.
Also perhaps ad more detail to the cockpit like a recessed or bevelled cockpit frame and maybe clip the wings a few degrees back- and downwards so to give it a little more speedish, ME 262 look.
The 2 Tailfins are way too small imo...they do the rest of the frame little justice.
Otherwise it looks great...too bad you can't port those particle effects straight over into X3...

Tail fins made bigger, more definition on the wing weaponpods, engine pipes added, gun-muzzles remodelled.

Not sure about that - there's plenty enough intakes on the main fuselage already.Stevio wrote:perhaps some grilled bodywork around the cockpit and nose might be good, Detail, Detail, Detail

Added a preliminary/undercoat texture, carved out some struts on the cockpit and added transparency.

What's the atmospheric top speed? It doesn't look like it would be able to maintain hypersonic velocity or even keep a supersonic velocity. However the wing structure looks pretty good for maintaining lift and manuevering at lower speed.
Here's a pair of concepts of my own...
SF-36 Raptor Interceptor.
- High speed MECO Starfighter designed aggressively for speed and manueverability at the expense of payload capacity. Capable speed and manuevers in both space and atmospheric conditions thanks to attention payed to both the airframe and the thruster assemblies.

SF/A-30C Phoenix Bomber
- Designed to deliver payloads at un-precidented speed with astounding precision. Hypersonic atmospheric trajectory produces a glowing trail during high speed bombing runs. Cannot be intercepted by SAMs due to the friction heat and brute speed. ... Spectacular to watch during a bombing pattern when an entire squadron is pressent.

no thats not what i meant, grilled probably wasn't the best word to useesd wrote:Not sure about that - there's plenty enough intakes on the main fuselage already.Stevio wrote:perhaps some grilled bodywork around the cockpit and nose might be good, Detail, Detail, Detail

hmmm... what word to use

but it doesn't really matter now the new texture fits the bill

Very nice progres!
Some things which might even make it more nice:
The tailfins could probably do with a curve coming up from the hull just about infront of the cockpit, possibly even flowing from the intakes just before the cockpit , gradually sloping into the tailfin itself..not sure about this one though.
The part where the gun barrel connects to the wing and/or gunpod looks too 'stuck on' (I know, partially because of textured vs untextured but still) atm, perhaps if you made it so the gunpod 'mouths' like a glove over the barrel with a recessed innerpart? this would also up the illusion of the guns actually going further inside the wings and thus make them look less cut-off.
The aft-part below the tails could do with a little more curving imo, it looks too boxed and might be better of with twices the length, gradually becoming smaller..that way you'd end up with a much better sleeker hull silouette, though it might also take away some of the vessels uniqueness.
Difficult to say.
Apart from this nitpicking, again, great work!

They have similar profiles as far as body style and wing sweep go. However the ESD one has the following differences.
It has a nose that will actually allow it some aerodynamics. The cockpit is further back, and is round. The weapons are mounted mid wing instead of wing-tip which makes them more accurate against small targets. The engines are partially built INTO the wing structure where as the model in the SNAP link looks to have them hanging like jet-liner engines. Also, ESD's is trans-atmospheric or MECO capable. Where as the model looks to be jet engine propelled. (The engines have intake fans on the front. Only required if you're using the air as part of your engine system.)
I wouldn't be surprised to See ESD's design outperform that model in all fields.

maybe its just me then... don't take offence anyhow as none is intendedesd wrote:BDStyle wrote:SNAP!
I thought i'd seen something similar somewhere before, nice job none the less and i'm very sure its just a coincedance![]()
Other than the fact that it has two tails, it has wings and it has underslung engines, where's the similarity?
