Its a frequently documented hearsay that whenever the release date gets close, the occurrence of word "when" is counted from threads like this, and that number is added to the release date. (Neat trick actually. A person bound by NDA can innocently drop in a when now and then to hint about the severity of remaining problems without actually saying anything. )
So when could then devs add word "multi" to the list of counted words?

LOL! I don't know what cracks me up more, my duh'm comment or SymTec's reply! However, it made me go back and do a little digging, and came across this from News v24 (Dec 2006):
BurnIt!: Of course there will be, but it is too early to say anything specific about it. There are many big changes planned, and we are currently at the stage of finalising the concepts and sorting out all the ideas. We listened very carefully to our fans about what they liked and did not like about X3. Though there will be much more than that - for example we're re-creating the whole way that players interact with the game to make it all more streamlined and intuitive and we're also putting a lot of effort into a completely new AI to make the game experience even more interesting. Sorry, but we can't reveal any more than that at this stage.
If this is still on track, and what the upcoming patches will do, then that is just awesome!
That quote was not referring to this patch, which wasn't even a twinkle in a developer's eye a year ago when that news article was issued. This should have been obvious given the question, which was about the future of the X-series.
I never post here, and I thought I'd throw my speculation out there. DirectX10 rendering.
ArtificialLife streamlining.
As far as anything else feasible, testbed for the next installment (as far as features and by features I don't mean multiplayer or superleet multithreading support or multicore support)
Anyways, I'm just going to sit back and watch now as everyone here runs around crazy.

I suspect that would be a change of a similar order of magnitude as multithreading, meaning it's not likely. I'm not all that familiar with graphics code though.
The actual implementation of DX10 would allow for more dynamic lighting environs, "real" fog (as in nebulae would no longer be texture after texture slamming into your view) which allows for "rays", of course the introduction of real-time occlusion would also be pretty nice, although, in a space sim it's not necessary unless on the surface of a planet or in a nebula.
Anyways, rambling complete.
I'm just proud of myself for actually spending some time playing X3 this month, instead of letting it sit on my shelf for two years like a did in the past.
nirwin, the problem with adding DX10, there would need to be two versions of the rendering engine. A DX9 compat (which is what we have) and a DX10 compat (which for the time being would only work on Vista, and only with DX10 capable video cards see, GeForce 8 series cards)
So unless you're looking into upgrading the scalability goes right out the window. Now, if there was someway to make a DX10 wrapper...
Multiplayer - out of question..
DX10 - out of question...
I think, i hope ctually, they will add some notoriety fix with sector takeovers hihihihi Some full scale WAR maybe As this ordinary trade and stuff - boaaaaring
We want to trade/fight in war zones ... thats where the bigest moneyz r made
a patch for DX10 is highly unlikly as it would most likly mean a complete rewrite of the graphics engine which is no easy feat, and only something u would do for a brand new game, its not even likly for an expansion
You should check some old threads. For example:
* In the beginning the Borons butchered Argon Mammoths that player had hired, and so on ...
* Version 1.3 turned GoD and Kha'ak Invasions on. Some players had empires before that update ...
There are two ways to be "in the receiving end" in war
I wouldn't be for constant warfare, but wars starting and ending would be nice. Wars without RRF's assistance, anyway.
I doubt that that sort of thing will appear in any patch, though. It made enough people mad that the universe was too safe, and it made even more people mad when the universe wasn't safe enough, so I think Ego is going to leave the danger balance right where it is thankyouverymuch.
