Good luck Sluggy. Good hunting everyone!
What's that? You'd like your application fast-tracked? Why of course!

128 - The Cake Is A Lie

Beware of confectionery products bearing gifts..

.. Yipe, I wasn't expecting that lot!

Any other time that would have been quite the ambush and my initial reaction while I'm busy choking on my doughnut is to put out an emergency call for backup, but fortunately this time I've got a sizeable Terran Fleet who've tagged along for the ride so suddenly things aren't looking quite so one-sided. 'Hellbound Handbasket' duly turns up anyway in answer to the call with it's new captain looking slightly disturbed over the comms that he's been called into action quite so quickly. Frankly it's a bit early in the morning to stomach the sight of a grizzled old captain with a fuel hangover sat in his pyjamas so I cut the video feed pretty quick and stick to audio only. The Panther was due a light shakedown cruise to run some systems tests and a livefire excercise wasn't really on the cards so soon. Still, nothing like a little adversity to bring out the best.

Blue and Orange wings get dropped into space and I'm all set to order them in to clear a path but decide at the last moment that actually no, I'm not going to spoil the Terrans moment. Not because I've any particular problem with stealing their thunder, but more because with roughly equivalent fighter wings there I'd quite like to see how the Terrans fair going up against Split ships as that may give me some indicators for when I find myself facing down a wing of say, ooh, 15 Thors.

And it makes for quite an intersting skirmish to watch actually. Initial points go to the Terrans with their opening salvoes of Poltergeist missiles making a bit of mess of the inbound Split fighters, but once the dogfight closes down to knife range the inaccuracy of the EMPC starts to become very noticeable versus the PBE equipped Mambas and despite their superior shielding the fight quickly turns agains the Terran forces. All in all the Split comprehensively trounce the Terrans fighter screen so it's probably just as well they brought that Odin along as well. With the Split occupied attempting to take the Odin down that makes it the perfect time to send in Blue and Orange to help mop up, a bit of light excercise for them as this is the first bit of combat they've seen for a while so it wouldn't hurt to ease them back into it before T-day.

http://dbbr17626.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/steve/128-2.gif

Good stuff, some of those interesting Poltergeist missiles to retrieve amongst the debris field of smashed Terran fighters and the TL captured as planned. The TL captain tries to make a run for it in his space suit but unsuprisingly doesn't get very far. What kind of nutter tries to flee a battlefield in a just a spacesuit? On the plus side tho his abandoned personal Jaguar has some very interesting modifications so we've recovered that one and I'll be passing it along to the tech boys for evaluation. No casualties among the flyboys and a bit of a loosening up session so that's all good too.

The Terrans have requested the Split captain we've taken into custody be dropped off at a secure facility at their Moon base and being the mercenary type I'm hoping they'll run true to previous form and give me a freebie ship or two for my troubles, but despite being duly grateful apparently I'm out of luck this time, or they're out of freebie ships as instead I'm just invited to 'enjoy the view'..

http://dbbr17626.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/steve/128-3.jpg

.. Do I really look the 'view enjoying' type? You guys can't even spare one of them little Rapiers? No? Meh..

*Squeals in joy* Err, *Whoops in joy*

Alez, the pilot of Sword, reporting to...err...who's in charge of blue wing now? Well at least I didn't get killed during my ship's shakedown run. And it's big enough that I can enjoy a good rest in an actual bed. Not like you fighter jocks who've got but a cockpit to yourselves.

And NS, I'm removing my application to fly a rapier now. I like my M3+ just a bit more.

That's some nice looking Odin. Sitting out there. All alone. With no escort and nobody to help it.

That's also a plot Odin, sitting all alone, with super-secret invinci-tech. Or at least, that's my guess.

I am a bit surprised that the Terrans got trounced, in every one of my games they always came up on top and I never brought anything more than an M3 into the fight :P.

Steve hasn't really assigned someone, but I've been handling things till we get word from the brass hats. You've got the room with the giant fish tank, so you'll probably want to grab squeegee and mop before you head in.

So, I'm very curious as to what approach Steve plans to take in attempting to capture the Tyr. Use his fleet to clean out the Tyr's support, then go one-on-one with the Tyr? Sit back while dropping shiploads of fighter drones to keep the flak busy? Or possibly spamming large amounts of wasps and flails to occupy the turrets, while the boarding pods sneak in? Or, with the greatest risk, throw every available fighter pilot at the Tyr, hoping enough survive to keep the shields down while the marines cut through the hull?

How about another option: Ion Cannons? Shield and weapons energy suppression! Akuma, Boreas, Brigantine, Phoenix, Ray, Thresher, Titan, can all mount them. You're gonna need something to keep the Tyr's massive weapons energy generator tied up.

Steve hasn't got any of these ships yet, so I think Ion Cannons won't be an option at all.

My choice would be Fighter Drones... lots of them...
Throwing Fighters at the Tyr is a waste of good men. Of course, some would be proud to die in a battle against such an enemy - but there's a difference between "honorable death in battle" and "kill your own dumb self".
Maybe the Falcon Haulers or Sentinels could have a chance of surviving that amount of flak. But still they should have a lot of Wasps ready and the launch-percentage up in the high 90's.

But I tend to consider N-S capable of accomplishing this mission and look forward to the next chapter ;)

Steve's story will not end (yet) - worst case, he'll jump out with heavy casualties among the fighter wings  (unless he goes all suicidal on us...)

Thus far, none of N-S's stories have ended when a plan has gone bad. They end when he jumps though a gate and, whoops, there's a hostile M7 on the other side.

Pre-Engagement Interview questions from Argon News

1. How do you feel about attacking your friends?

2. What do you hope to accomplish?

3. How do you deal with the fear of death?

4. Are you really prepared to give you life for your corperate master?

5. Have you ever thought about mutiny?

6. Wouldn't it be great to have your own fleet one day?

7. Surely you will not fly into a suicidal situation?

8. More questions to follow...

It lacks a Trading System Extention to show prices in the sector you are in. The lack of satellites in rebirth is also annoying to the trader/pirate looking for a mark.

And finally, we at Argon Interstellar News service have some sad news to bring to you tonight.

One of our colleges, Kenny, was killed recently while on assignment. You may remember Kenny from such stories as 'half of Argon fighter fleet quits' and 'how to reform a pirate in 10 days'.

Argon authorities are still investigating the death, but we can confirm that the body was discovered with a warning note, written in kenny's blood, which said: "This is the fate of those who try to undermine moral."

OMG I thought that was Steve posting that at first. I hope he steals that Tyr though.

And now for the fkn news! A tyr went missing today in the Terran/Argon border regions. Bothe governments are denying involvement and in fact all they know is that the pride of the Terran Navy was stolen by forces unknown to any government. Radioactive residuis and fist sized holes found on ship debris suggest the escort was wantonly over nuked and picked off in their weakened state by at least 6 fighters mounting Energy Bolt Chainguns. Foriensic scientist are surveying the floating debris field where this unwieldly invisible foe unfairly and decicively ambushed the Tyrs defences. Some bits of the Terran flagship are emmiting radiation suggesting it was also hit but there is not enough debris to conclude it was destroyed but rather crippled as hull plating from bording pods has been recovered in the area.

Also recovered was a recording suggesting the pirates are to blame presumably the Yaki as they are the only organized pirates known to be in existance.

The recording is audio only. Let me play that for you.... AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Its not that he's worth dying for its that this contract clearly states that if I don't die for him he will be legally allowed to shoot me.

Also I'd like to sign up...
