There is no way on Earth that removing a codec will affect the offer of in-game TL hiring. You are being confused by a coincidence that is caused by something else in-game that is intentional and/or hard coded. NPC TLs will not offer to be hired if they are already on their way to do something else such as build an NPC station or dock at a shipyard to pick up a station kit, check their cargobay and current orders.

I suggest that you get rid of the harmful codecs again. They are unwanted intruders in your System files and should not be there. You will not find them in the OS as originally installed and then kept clean. I do agree though that you should not mess with hidden or system files if you do not know or are not being advised of the wisdom and implications of doing so.

Okay, I looked it up and it was supposed to be for some kind of TV tuner, but I don't have a tuner on my computer, that was kind of strange. I uninstalled the program but it left the file folder Hauppauge in my system 32 and I moved it to my recycle bin.

Hopefully it will not cause any errors, I didn't know that you could get rejected by by TL's, so I was kind of freaking out. I went to two different sectors and both TL's turned me down and they have never done that before. Is that new to AP?

No, not new for TLs, just coincidence. So are you more-or-less free of the really technical issues now?

I ended up fixing the problem just by deleting the Hauppauge folder in system 32 and uninstalling that program that had those files in it.

Thanks for the help. Seems it was a TV-Tuner program that was faulty was acting like a virus on my system even though I didn't have a tuner in my system. Not sure how it even got there, or why they would add system 32 files to run that. I guess I will have to watch out when buying a TV-Tuner if I ever get one. I had one on my old computer, I wonder if that was the cause of all the problem I had on it, oh well too late now to try and fix that one.

many programs would add files into system32, as this is where most shared libraries go, which alot of programs will install and use, so its not all that uncommon.

althou it is abit strange why hauppuage drivers would have been installed in the first place. Its possible they would have come bundled with another application, possibly some video editing software or codecs pack, that have used the libraries

I guess it turns out I lied, I guess that is what happens when I open up my big mouth, lol. It worked fine without any problems the other day (it hasn't gone a whole day without doing this before), went a whole day without doing it, but then I tell you that it is solved on the forums that it is fixed and then it goes and does it again. I think it did solve the sound issues I was having, I think the alt/tabbing was caused by another issue.

Yes the Alt/Tab issue is more likely a Steam issue rather than a game one I believe as it seems to affect some other Steam games only since a recent Steam update. I think we may have to wait and see what future Steam updates bring about on that issue.

I do not know much about programming, but I do have an associates in electronics and some troubleshooting background. Intermittent problems can be hard to solve, sometimes if you get close to the correct cause of the problem it can seem to fix it but it will still be there.

It seems like if deleting that folder decreased the frequency of that problem, then the problem may come from when the game tries to access that kind of file in the system 32, so instead of going to the wrong file then it goes to the correct file, but maybe there is a problem with it accessing the correct file as well. So then instead of going to the wrong file and having the problem happen more often then it could be a smaller problem accessing the correct one.

Or maybe do you think I could have another program that is acting like that folder that I removed? If so then it could not be the steam game.

While a second misbehaving set of codecs is a possibility, the problem that some Steam users are seeing with some Steam games is not so much that other applications are grabbing the OS window focus (which was always a possible intent of theirs), but that Steam is now allowing them to do so - which it didn't (we think) before the recent update. That is the Alt/Tab change-issue that we need to Steam to consider and confirm as correct/fix or deny outright so that we have to look elsewhere.

I don't think this is a system intermittent problem at all. I see it occasionally and I don't have the misbehaving codecs. I think that the relationship and priority for Steam has recently changed with respect to some other applications. That is the best way that I can explain my opinion on this.

EDIT on seeing your new DxDiag:

Yes, these are still active:

DirectShow Filters:
MainConcept (MCE) MPEG Encoder,0x00200000,2,1,mceesmpeg.ax,
Media Multiplexer Category:
MainConcept (MCE) MPEG Encoder,0x00600000,2,1,mceesmpeg.ax,

Look again for mceesmpeg.ax on your system, including in hidden files.

This is strange, I did a search on my computer and it cannot find this file. I even went to the folder options and changed it to be able to see hidden files. I then ran the dxdiag again just to make sure and it only shows up in the dxdiag, then did the search again and the only place it finds it is in the dxdiag data...

Does this mean I am going insane? Or is there some reason why it would only show up in the dxdiag data, I even double checked to show hidden files and it is set on show...

Have a look at this for hints. I am afraid I cannot test what is going on because I have not allowed any such codecs to install and I have various security applications to stop it happening without permission.

The other thing you can do is search for that codec name in the registry using the Regedit.exe Find/Ctrl F function and see if any entries for it identify the directory and path used for it (or them). Do not make any registry changes in Regedit or allow them to be saved though!

Not sure how to use Regedit and said I tried invalid commands. Not sure what you want me to do when you say to look it up there but not change it. I don't think I know how to do what your saying or what that is exactly.

On another note, do you know how I could just change my mouse pointer speed in game? I change it in options outside of the game but that seems to have no effect, I was wanting to speed it up, I don't like having to lift my mouse to drag across screen.

If that thread I linked cannot help you then there is really nothing else I can suggest.

If you first look up Regedit on your browser search, you will see what it is for and info about it. Regedit is a system tool for examining your Registry entries (and making changes - but that is not recommended unless you are experienced and really know what you are doing). If you just click the Start icon (bottom left of desktop) and type regedit in the search box it will come up and can be selected to run it.

I was suggesting that use its Find function just to find any name entries for that codec in the registry and just look to see if those registry entries identified the directory paths to its locations, so that you could later find all instances of it by a manual directory search. I was not suggesting that you make any changes in the registry at all. The codec is probably in a system folder that a 'normal' system search is afraid to look in. I am afraid these misbehaving codecs are often deliberately designed to be hard to find and remove!

If you are not comfortable in registry stuff then I suggest that you leave it as is or maybe get someone you know who is more registry-experienced to have a look. Experimenting with changes in the registry is not a good idea at all!

I don't know what else to suggest to you on that codec.

As to mouse sensitivity, that is not controlled in game and, as you say, the OS commands do not affect in-game sensitivity. Your only hope to change things would be if you had a scaleable mouse and driver with its own sensitivity controls built into its driver and control panel. Yours is a generic PS/2 hid/ts mouse driver though.

The thing is I don't know what I would be doing, and the first problem I got was not being able to even run the program. It acted like I needed to type in a correct command function just to get it to run. IDK, I just have a bad feeling about messing with it, and like you say if you don't know what your doing you probably shouldn't mess with it. Maybe if it is a steam issue of letting these misbehaving files have there way and they fix that sometime it will be solved. Or I could ask my brother about it he might know, he is going to graduate from a computer gaming programming school soon.

The next time I get a mouse I guess I will look into getting one with a sensitivity control on it. I heard a while back that to be a pro gamer that you have to play on high sensitivity and then I started using it and got use to it. Going back to slow mouse speed is kind of a drag for me now, I feel like I might as well be having to wined a crank in order to issue space ship commands. You shouldn't have to raise your mouse off of your mouse pad to go across screen, that is just time where you would just not be able to issue commands at all and anything can happen during that time if you play long enough.
