Honestly I don't know what I was thinking; I went back through this thread and I must have hallucinated someone mentioning America. Disregard me having a stupid moment.bounty_hunter66 wrote: What? Did i mention anithing about America? Im not even from america, im from Europe. What does america have to do with what i said? You got some issues there my friend...
Like I said though *MANUALS* they do contain decent information, especially the TC and X:BTF ones. I don't know all that stuff, I never read any of the novels and barely managed to learn that the boron campaign was argon + boron Vs split, but that's just backstory fluff. I'm fairly certain that most people couldn't say why the Human race calls itself "Human" but it doesn't affect our ability to go about our daily life and play computer games. I mean if we're gonna suspend our disbelief enough to accept that we're flying space-fighters and that there are sentient fish people then we can extend that to believing that races chose their names based off of the periodic table.
And yes, also as I said, I strongly suspect that this XTreme Edition will have LOOTS of backstory and additional awesome fluff.
Edit : jrd417 - X2 and X3:R should certainly. I shall see tomorrow morning if I can manage to get my copy of X:BTF to run in Vista 64.

This is a great idea! Here's what I think should be in it:
CDs in the box:
All the X games (obviously). Make sure they are the patched versions
A CD that holds the best mods, and some fan fiction.
A CD that has some developer diaries, every trailer for the X series, and other media, history of X video, etc.
A CD containing the X soundtrack
Paper stuff:
Every manual for the games. Make sure to fix up some of them.
Print what people say the best of the fan fictions.
Make an "Art of X" book. Include the best screens, concept are, etc.
X posters!
Quick reference sheet.
Other
Include a little Argon Nova model, and an Argon Buster keychain
This would be a big box, but I would get it.

How can one player flying one ship defeat a big gang of pirates?
Good flying, or reinforcements. Lots of reinforcements.

I'll second the art book idea, and the tagged mp3 soundtrack idea, or even an actual music CD set of the soundtrack that people could rip for themselves if they wanted.
I would like to see maybe a cleaned up and printed version of The X3 Handbook by apricotslice, it's been incredibly helpful to me in the past.
I would also like to express my hopes that this superbox sees the light of day in the US even though I haven't been able pick up a copy of Terran Conflict yet, which pains me greatly.
Stupid need to replace my burner over buying fun and addicting video game crap.

No. You got it all wrong. The races in X were not based on the periodic table. Is Paranid an element? is Split an Element? is Khaak an element? Its true that Argon Boron and Xenon are elements but their names werent given from the periodic table.I'm fairly certain that most people couldn't say why the Human race calls itself "Human" but it doesn't affect our ability to go about our daily life and play computer games. The Argons are named after the legendary Nathan R. Gunne (AR-Ggon, get it?) Who sacrificed himself to save the earth by luring the terraformer fleet out of the Solar System destroying the gate in procces but saving the earth. That was the point where X univeres was cut out from Earth.
The Xenon are named after the greek word "xenon" wich means "alien". The story tells us that they were named that way by Argons and then the word spread really quick among the races

I suggest my ship size comparison (link in my sig) the only so far that lets people see ships from up and from front views.
)

why not adding ALL the Argonopedia site? it contains a frikkin load of lore and tech info, will save years of time needed to create a PDF with all the data. (if the site creators agree of courseOr at least include the X timeline found on Argonopedia.

That was recently done for the entire Thief series (bought it, and I'm really enjoying it). There is a definate market for older games that people want to replay, so I'd hope so.jrd417 wrote:Will the older games be redone to play on newer OS's?

Why
The X series has already had more releases than "My way"
What is the point of this ?
I've got X3, and X3TC, there is now X3 gold and X3 V2. Once patched they are all pretty much the same game already.
The extra content mentioned here is already free for these games, and lets face it the old games will be a big let down.
Will any great number of people really want to spend time playing XBTF ? or Xtension ? (Themselves both released numerous times in the past )
XBTF is 49p in my local software store, and has been on the shelf for at least the seven years I've lived here..at that price - in fact now I think about it they have a 20% off day every few months for slow moving stock, so even at 40p it didn't sell.
This horse is flogged to death, It's legs have been cut off, it's bones are glue, it's flesh is dog food and it has been rendered to oblivion.
Give us something new Egosoft. Something REALLY new !
(oh ok, it is still a good game, but this seems likea tired and cynical idea to me)

If it's possible to sell year old games bundled with stuff you can download freely then it is nothing but economically sound!
And if it helps funding that "something REALLY new" you should actually support the project! At least be a REAL cynic and a good egoist. =)

Re: Why
We live in a capitalist society believe it or not, there is something called the profit motive - Supply what people demand - I'm usually broadminded with peoples comments but I struggle with the presentation of an opinion dressed up as a news bulletin. - You are not the people, you are an individual speaking with one voice and I think it fairly safe to say you are a minority.scritty wrote:The X series has already had more releases than "My way"

I thoroughly love the idea of the culmination of a (decade?) of X with this final product which I am sure will help FUND the next space game project.

I know this and know it well, but why does a new player need to know or care? How does this affect his gameplay experience in any way? Names from the periodic table are a perfectly acceptable conclusion that they can reach, and that's fine, or that the Split are named that because they're particularly flexiblebounty_hunter66 wrote:No. You got it all wrong. It's nice, but it's fluff and it doesn't matter.

oh... I disagree... the fluff is critical and in most cases makes the difference from a good and a bad game! It's nice, but it's fluff and it doesn't matter.
If the Universe is unbelivable, the immersion and the fun is ruined.
If you dunno the lore (at least a bit of it) you cannot understand what is going on and you will lose the "epic feel" of the entire series.
X-games are not a simple "shoot-em-up-with-your-fighter" nor a "become-the-richest-man-in-the-universe" type of game... they are much more.
this superbox will need to contain EVERYTHING that is related to X (the idea of the "superbox" is just that: a ubercontainer of all things made during this saga).
there is a section of the Superbox with fan-art and stories... would you cut them off just saying "fluff doesn't matter?".

I like it and it does add to the game for me, but Joe Random who picks up the game in his local video game shop probably doesn't, is what I meant to say. That is the reason why the entire in-universe history of the X-Games isn't included in most of the regular retail releases. If you've played all the games and know all that stuff then it is going to improve your experience, but by then you're a hardcore fan, whereas a regular guy just picking up X3 in a shop isn't going to have his gameplay experience damaged by not knowing it.someone else wrote:oh... I'm sure that the XTreme edition will include all the awesome backstory, but generally the people who buy the collector's edition of a game are the people who care about that stuff.

I, too, agree that the backstory is important. These games are not meant for your average gamer (they have console shooters).
+1 for a music CD and fan art.
I would also like to see a standalone kind of Argonpedia with 3D models and detailed information on various X-objects. The various storylines could also be presented. Perhaps even the best guides could be displayed through a central type of interface.

I've been playing X3 for some time now (Haven't got to XTC yet for some strange reason
) and to think I never had the patience to play XBTF
. Unfortunately, my CD with XBTF is useless now. Not just because of the graphics but also because of the speed of my PC nowadays.
I think it would be the icing on the cake if all X versions before X3 and XTC would not only be playable with modern systems but also with the graphics of X3 and XTC. It's basically the same what they did with the first Tomb Raider game.
I believe the X-games are worth every effort to make that happen.
