In front of the ship, some 10-ish meters away, is the satellite I earlier placed for the previous step in the quest. The HUD will helpfully show you a range to the satellite, in easy to read decimal format: 10 meters. Or 12, or whatever.
Directly above the satellite (no more than a meter or two up, and only less than a meter off center) is the quest marker for where to leave the ship with the antimatter cells. The HUD will helpfully show you a range to the quest marker, in easy to read decimal format: 22 meters.
These ranges cannot be reconciled. Try strafing your ship horizontally around the satellite in a complete circle to verify that the quest marker is always displayed ABOVE the satellite. Then position your ship above the quest marker, looking down at the satellite, and read the ranges supplied by the HUD (Edit for anyone who doesn't care to do the experiment: the quest marker (closer to your ship) shows a range that is reliably about 10 meters further away than the satellite, even though the quest marker is in between your ship and the satellite).
Something is wrong, and I wonder if this error can't be a symptom of the same thing that causes all sorts of random guidance weirdness.

Whoops edit for basic statistics: This is on the Linux/GoG version of 2.50hf1. Nvidia GTX1070 w/proprietary drivers. Unmodified game.
P.S.: The subject line words "Basic math error" are intended to indicate that only basic math is required to detect the presence of the error. I'm sure in the guts of the code, the math gets plenty compllicated!
