That 'opportunity' is unfortunately bugged. The Drill miner explodes within a few seconds of being within 5km of it (and I 'jumped' right next to it using a 'space jump patch/mod).
Due to the short few seconds being all there is, It's impossible without cheating - assuming it's actually even possible to remove the hazardous element in Northwest Void.
The 'Out of Sector' aspect is fine. No damage to owner ships nor the ownerless Drill; however, the default setting of attempting to claim even with maximum compliment of marines is still a non-starter. They'll say they've found something but, won't claim it. It's just a waste of time and yet another bug in a game that was 'Panic-launched' for Christmas.
I had to restart my entire game due a 'missing' lockbox in one of the Argon 'main' (Guild) missions because I'd probably discovered it days earlier. As a result, I leave the lock boxes well alone in case they're needed later to complete missions. I've opted for the fan-written Argon Citizen start or whatever it's called (fast-forwarded to researching at PHQ).
Soft EGO clearly haven't tested very much prior to launch (as many will doubtless testify due to the elusive '2nd Xenon P' to be destroyed - had to leave the Xenon alone in the hope that they'll produce a 'P' whilst my Adv Sats are in all of their sector in all corners of the map).
Anyway, a Drill mineral miner is less than a million when kitted-out.
Happy empire-building.
