I actually managed to complete the first mission the WRONG way.
This was (is, since I saved and quit last night at the sodoku part) my first play through this particular mission, and I didn't know that I have to use the UFJD multiple times to get into Freedom's Reach. At first I used the UFJD in Danna's Chance that took me to an unknown sector, where I'd wandered around aimlessly for a couple of minutes before I came to a conclusion that the mission must be bugged or something. So, despite the warning I jumped in FR with the regular JD with my Magnetar (edit: Zephyrus) equipped with a Turbo Booster and with four M3s in the docking bay, and upon entering I immediately engaged the the UFJD...ending up in an unknown sector once again.
Long story to short, I ended up zooming through the sector starting from the north gate towards station, dragging hundreds of xenon ships along in my wake as I passed by the beer can doing 350 m/s in my TM, swarms of enemy fighters spawning in front of me, tousands of poltergeist missiles zipping around me, without knowing what exactly I am supposed to do once I get there.
So, after 10 or so reloads later and trying various tactics to evade the massive amounts of fighters and missiles (including hiding beyond an asteriod and taking potshots at the enemy from my experimental shuttle) I decided it's best that I don't leave my TM at all, just head to the station, do some crazy maneuvering, shoot a couple of M5s, and dock as soon as I get the mission update. It left me with 86% hull and 27% shields, but at least I did get in. After that it only took one more reload to actually manage to get out of the sector - on the first try I got toasted while waiting for the JD countdown, blowing up the exact same moment my ship entered the warp tunnel, ending up in pieces in Elena's Fortune.
It was intense, I tell ya.
(edit: i somehow managed to mix up the magnetar with the zephyrus. i don't even have a magnetar, so i have no idea why i wrote that)

Well, here's one that's different...
Vanilla game.
Advanced Chokaru with 4 Sabres aboard in Danna's chance.
Plot guidance pointing to FR gate.
Can't see any weapons on screen for the Chokaru, although weapons are installed.
6th UFJD gets me to Freedoms Reach no problem, with Guidance active!
Strange communication and then plot line message comes in telling me to protect Teladi station.
Plot line points to Teladi station, but absolutely no baddies to protect it from...
Arrows point to Teladi station, but nothing ever happens when I get there...
I be most grateful for any guidance here...

Oops...
I gave up using Cycrow's patches for "A New Home"
What I really have is a Chokaro.
Good catch!
Additionally, if I dock my Chokaro at the Teladi station with no energy cells, I get a message indicating that as I didn't have enough energy cells to jump out of this sector, some have been added to my ship.
The message then tells me that I must "go quickly."
I must have broken something somewhere...

Sounds like it might be O.K. Just fly where you're supposed to fly and the mission might well be fine.
Spike
*edit; I've just updated the walkthrough with some of the common bugs that appear in the first mission.

@Spike
I was remiss in mentioning how terrific your walkthrough is!
Seeing more than a few less-than-positive posts about this mission, I read it twice, just to get me going.
I'm most grateful for the time and effort you put into this...
And, thanks for the boost.
I'll keep plugging away...
Cheers,

It's the long strings of events with sequential triggers that is the problem. If you want to make constructing a stable code as hard as possible, then you build your missions with long strings of events!
I suspect that being a community-designed plotline that has been signed by Egosoft, rather than developed by Egosoft in-house, may have led to a slight lack of testing in comparison to other plotlines, though many of the original bugs seem to have been fixed in later patches.
No disrespect intended to the creators; I think that given what they've tried to do they've had about as much success as is possible. And I really like the ANH plotline. It's developers have a full five stars from this direction.

Good way to put it.
In my case, without your painstaking guidance, the "long string" would be at the bottom of very tall grass.
Your last boost got me out of the Teladi station, and because I was low on energy cells, I decided to go sector by sector to Elena's Fortune.
Easing on through these sectors, I came upon a station with a blue book symbol!
Wow!
Plot line activated, big time.
On my way to Ocrakoke's Storm (sp?).
Many thanks Spike!

Not sure if this will work for everyone but it just worked for me;
After 4 hours of working the Sudoku puzzle (I hate sudoku and suck at it) i got mad, went and got my Boreas with 4 Heavy Centuars for support. I jumped in normally and attacked #cafe (at the same point in the mission) with my Boreas, and had the Heavy Centaurs on fighter duty, and when #cafe's sheilds dropped, I used a Mistral Super Freighter fully stocked with the best marines and captured it (after 5 tries/deaths) Once it was captured the mission continuted on normally, much to my surprise.
Quick extra tip: no active turrets on the freighter and the enemy fighters pay less attention to it.

How the heck did you do that? Mistral SFs can't launch boarding actions!?

Check the number of docked ships. There may be no remaining docking ports.
Remove you own docked ship and then try docking; that'll fix it if it is indeed the problem.

There seems to be something very wrong with this mission for me. I've just reached the step where I am to dock at the teladi trading station to pick up the survivors.
I realized after a few reloads I couldn't even safely get to the station before being torn apart by the missile spamming M3s that spawn around me. Knowing I had to remain in the system for the mission to not disappear off my missions menu I ordered a Pegasus from paranid prime and had it fly over to my sector with a docking computer in it. Once it entered the system I was quick to have it eject the docking computer before it exploded due to the plot's *kill all everything that isn't player ship instantly* deal.
I was finally able to get to the station now and pick up the passengers... But now I can't get out of the system before being killed because of the massive missile spam that kills me before the jump drive even reaches 30%. I have to be missing something here because there is no way this mission was implemented with this being the intended way to do it.
Edit: Fun fact, the aura can also kill you while docked at the station.

I used the unfocused jump in my magnetar a few times until it dropped me about 108km beneath the station.Spychotic wrote:How are you getting into the Sector?
I did the pickup of the docking computer by jumping manually to the same sector so I could pick up the cargo that the pegasus dropped. After that I flew back around to the side opposite of the cpu ship so I wouldn't melt.

Suggest that you reload, buy a docking computer before jumping into Freedom's Reach, and then execute the jump-in again. If' you're tangoing with the CPU ship then it's no wonder you're finding the mission tricky.

To clarify, the cpu ship never moves or shoots. It just sits between the gate and the trading station in the middle of a fighter swarm.
I've tried a number of times but every time I've been able to make it to the station I can never live long enough to jump out.
Is being close enough to the cpu ship so that I take constant damage also the range where M3s spawn all over me? because I noticed though all my reloading that sometimes when I would first enter the system the cpu ship would be in different locations, but still in the same general area.
