when is it decided that the AI pilot is going to bail?
I reloaded 3 times to try to cap a Duke's TP but all three times the stupid guy wouldn't bail. So, when is it decided that the shield will be destroyed leading to pilot to bail? When I enter system? every successful shot? when?

Longterm average for bailouts is about 1 in 10, so don't expect every pilot to bail, even on multiple reloads. It's mostly random, but there are other factors involved, including your relative ship size, the enemy pilot's morale level, and possibly a few others. But the mighty RNG rules all.

There's a hidden stat, called 'morale'. If it's high, they are less likely to bail, if it's low, they'll jump out as soon as their hull falls below 86%. Ýou can only see this stat if you don't mind your game being tagged as 'modified'.
Edit: Every shot that lands and does hull damage below 87% will potentially make the pilot bail. That's why PBE's are so popular - does lots of shield damage, but not much hull damage.

Maverick: Requesting permission for flyby.
Air Boss Johnson: That's a negative ghostrider, the pattern is full.
Goose: No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.
Maverick: Sorry Goose, but it's time to buzz a Split.
Split: Split now give you .... Aaaarrriiiigh.

simple bail rules
1 what you want wont, what you dont will every time
2 the more you want it the less likley it is too happen
3 the pilot will bail just before that last burst of HEPT strikes and blows it to bits.
and the golden rule
there is no pattern too bails just the human mind not beign able to comprehend caos theory.

I have submitted this before:
It's the fault of the in-game Player Anxiety Detector (PAD) software extension fitted as standard on all Player ships. The more the Player wants something, the more the AI detects the rising blood pressure and avoids providing it. It was introduced in Patch 2.3 I think as a means of increasing the longer term appeal of X3 gameplaying. I think the S&M forum threads have a few clever means of turning it off in the most fraught situations, however if you want to stay vanilla then the further use of patience and quiet determination is advised.
