Well, it would hardly be a good idea to try and make that horribly undershielded Carrack do anything- annoy anything bigger than an M4 and it's going to damage the ship. Either way, we'll soon be raking it in- I've initiated our first business venture!

Filling the gaps

After a few, various missions, I have accumulated slightly over 1Mcr, so I decide to look at building a station somewhere in Teladi space- they seem to have a lot of high-tier goods like weapons, with the mid-tier food to supply them, but no bottom- tier food factories- in Blue Profit the Sun Oil refineries are running on empty and paying a premium for the 'Sunrise Flowers' used to make the oil. So I fly to CEO's Sprite after picking up my Elite and hire the supply Albatross there for a very fair 500cr. It docks at the local shipyard and I order an L-sized flower farm. I comm. the captain to fly into Blue Profit and make for the gate. In Blue Profit, I move to the East- out of the trade lanes- the hostile traffic seems to like taking potshots at me. Idling maybe twenty kilometres North-East of the South gate, I notice a hostile corvette class contact headed straight for me! Worse, it's one of the Khaak models, and doesn't seem to want to leave me alone. I fly away, searching for a handy asteroid to hide behind. I don't find a suitable candidate, but do spot the distinctive silhouette of a Teladi battleship- a Shrike M7. Perfect. I fly up behind it and wait for the Khaak Corvette and Shrike to meet. When they do, sparks fly:

The Shrike's escorts open up with PBGs, ending the battle moments after it starts:

Impressive. Anyway, the Albatross has arrived and I ask the captain to unload the station. My first above-board business venture is unpacked, and I assign the mercury hauler to energy hauling duty. With any luck, this'll be making a decent profit while I do other things.

I've always liked the Teladi- they have a refreshingly clear view as to what their aims are, and they are surprisingly good at organising other people to help them reach their goal- old Tsunagolis had been a prime example of this- you wouldn't expect the child-sized Teladi to be especially charismatic, but they certainly know how to retain loyalty. In a poor light, the shares of the profits on pirating runs could have been called fair. But still, I don't see what that lizard saw in me to start with- I mean, I was young and stupid, with not a minute's combat experience under my belt, yet I was taken in and trained- by Pirates! Why? A clan chief doesn't need another rookie to go and waste a perfectly good ship by biting off more than they can chew... Why was I sent along this path? To see friends- or at least colleagues- killed in a second, but to have been in command, and watching your organisation grow... What made that Teladi accept me?

Your optimistic disposition maybe
I'll have you know the factory's already begun to pay for itself. I'd be amazed if it didn't- there are three oil refineries and the nearest flower farm other than mine is three sectors away. If that's not a gap in the market I don't know what is...

Sailing the solar winds once more

With the flower farm safely set up and the freighter going about its business, I decide to look for a shield factory- the Teladi don't sell 1GJ shields at their EQ docks, so I need to find out where else I can get them. Which is a problem, since nobody else will deal with me. I'm in luck though- CEO's Sprite has a heavy shield complex with three in stock and I have 900,000cr. More than enough for the two to put on my Carrack. I call the mercury over and order the shields. A desperate Teladi at the shipyard's selling a slightly-dinged Manta Hauler for 150Kcr, so I buy it. The resale price is a cool 605k. She must have been stoned out of her mind- that's why Pirates sell space weed to the poor souls who have nothing to lose but their sanity. No- we drink copious amounts of Argon Whisky instead. I go to pick up the Carrack.

The crew greet my news that we don't have to be quite so light- handed any more well, particularly Krek Asimar. I'm not sure what to make of him- the Terrans are famously stiff and opposed to piracy, so I don't know what makes this individual quite so eager to kill (generally) innocent civilans. But still, he's allowed to fire back at anyone who shoots first now. We should be able to pass that off as self-defence... The freighter arrives and we redock at the EQ dock. I transfer all the rubbish in the Carrack's hold to the freighter to sell when the opportunity arises and take the shields, and some jumpdrive energy, onboard. We sail again! But what to call ourselves? I'll think of something... Now we have some more protection, I'd quite like to explore through Split space some more- I stopped at Family Tkr last time I followed that string of sectors- even though I've done a couple of missions for the Split and quite a lot of Split are now neutral towards me, they still don't want me in their core sectors. Now that I'm rather better protected, I think I'll go digging again...

Some time later, the flower farm has produced a good few thousand sunrise flowers, so I switch the Mercury to selling duty, which makes the first profitable trading run ever made by my- as yet unnamed- company. Minor triumph soon forgotten, I pick up a Buzzard Sentinel at CEO's Sprite for 90k then sell it for about 300k. These Teladi aren't all they cracked up to be when it comes to making a profit! At least, some of them... I charge the jumpdrive, feeding it the co-ordinates for the South gate of Ghinn's Escape after a cartographer fortuitously sells me the map. In Family Njy, having leapfrogged several potentially hostile sectors, I am met with the front end of a Python, the captain telling me to leave. OK, I'm faster than it, but I have a horrible feeling that I wouldn't have the chance to get away fast enough. I retreat, jumping instead to Thuruk's Beard, an altogether more lax border sector, although I don't intend to stay- I'm just using it to save the 20 energy cells I'd expend to get through to the next sector. Yeah, I'm a miser. So what? I need to be as economic as possible with the little money I have. So there.

A boron trader flying a Magnetar decides it's his time for fame and opens up on me, secure(or so he thinks) in the knowledge that he has some M3 escorts. Well, it's time to see what these beam cannons are all about, eh? Krek, you're cleared to fire. Harmon, see they don't overheat. Utmancketslotslaycutllosret, put the kettle on, would you? And get some food ready. I think a celebration's in order- we're operational! And there goes our assailant. Can't say I feel sorry for the idiot... And, since we're in Split space, we actually gain some trust with the locals!

Property:
1x Flower farm

1x Carrack, hold now empty of random stuff. Now a fully capable frigate. Missing some guns though.
1x Elite
1xPirate Harrier Raider, 'Banshee'
1x Iguana Vanguard
1x Mercury hauler

~800kcr.

Well I don't have time for a chapter today, but I promise you'll get a super mega one tomorrow- I've expanded my Universe map. Clearing four(well, three really- one was already empty.) Xenon sectors on the way. After combat testing, I've decided to limit my use of the Carrack(canonically!) due to the incredible OP ness of the PBCs. I have some nice screens of them in action though(Attacking two Xenon stations at once, for example. That looks awesome.) . So, coming soon to your sub-ethanet reciever, the next episode of 'A robbery never to be forgotten',

OTAS frigate(was it Astreaus Hauler?) Which is basically a Cerberus with spiffed- up stats.(About 30 more speed and generally better stats.) Can also mount PBCs. And yes, they are awesome. Their only weakness is simply that they are considerably weaker than capital class weapons. Far more energy- efficient and slightly more powerful than the CIG/ISR/IPGs though. All in all, a nice gun. Too nice, hence the self-imposed limitation.(Or rather, player/story-imposed limitation. It's not Xanvié who limits the use of the Carrack. Any more will spoil the surprise, so there.)

Yes, but what I mean is that my crew shouldn't be drunk while they're on duty- particularly the engineer responsible for GIVING ME RAMMING SPEED and generally keeping the ship running. Yes, you heard me right- RAMMING SPEED! With only two gigajoules of shielding, it requires quite some finesse to pull off without hull damage/death.

Oh yes, and it's time for a random Monty Python sketch. It's Piratey!

Part one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX61PUZ3xkI
Part two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iakR7sB0 ... re=related

OK, maybe not, but it's still awesome. Mods feel free to get rid of it if it's too un-X-ish.

I'M A-FIRING MAH LAZORZ!

With our battleship running well, and the flower farm hauling in profits, I decide that it is necessary to expand our horizons at all costs- Teladi space is all very well, but we're nowhere near non-aligned or hostile space- which is by far the most profitable. I must search for the Xenon. I happen to know that there is a cluster of Boron sectors to the far North-East of the Universe which is terrorised by Xenon patrols, so I once again set off for the East-West string of Split sectors, which was cut so short by the untimely appearance of that Python. I am again saved the journey however when yet another cartographer provides me with the co-ordinates for Hila's Joy and- vitally- Bluish Snout, right next to the plagued sector. Of course I refuel the jumpdrive and go there directly- it means I'm less likely to get ambushed by a Boron battleship. I enter the Menelaus' Paradise sector and move towards the sector centre. There's an equipment dock there, but I don't have landing rights. I'm about to move on when a Boron ship opens comms. He claims to be from the Royal Boron Intelligence Service. A very strange offer he has too- recon the two Xenon sectors to the East(So that's where they are!) and destroy any installations or ships I can find. The reward? A pardon- the option to start from scratch with the Boron kingdom. I smell a rat, but it's a potentially profitable rat which is too good to resist. I'll show those flying microchips what this ship can do!

The first sector is incredibly boring- the Boron told me that the next sector was to the North, saving me the toil of searching for the gate- but it's so far away! And I haven't seen a single ship for ages! I spot a small Xenon corvette patrol near the gate, and move to attack range. Even without my main weapons array, the Plasma Beam Cannons rip the corvette and its escorts apart in seconds. The only salvageable thing is a lone Silkworm missile, which is no good at all. On to the next sector... Ah! Something to fight! Two Qs on scanner, a J or a K in the distance and some fighters. The nearest Q is engaged, and searing white beams of plasma contact its shields, nibbling them away as I lead the Xenon battleship, its weapons out of range of me but mine chipping away at it. Soon after, the shields drop and the hull practically evaporates! Beam weapons seem far, far more powerful against hull than shields, certainly. The other Q has arrived, and begins to put huge amounts of IBL fire into space. I avoid all of it, the carrack's small size allowing me to slide between the attacks using my strafe drive. Moving away from the Q, I repeat the tactic to just as much success. There're a few Firestorm torpedoes lying about, so I collect them and move towards the anonymous-classed Xenon battleship, which turns out to be a J carrier. It has a couple of fighters onboard, but somewhat less shielding than a destroyer. I lead it around, and my beam lasers begin to fire. The J falls, quickly followed by the small cloud of fighters it managed to launch. How strange... No stat- oh. Dang, they hid that well! Black on black, to be sure! The big spherical Xenon station's position is only betrayed by the red lights on its exterior. At least I found it... Move near, Krek? You've done great so far- now let's see if you can hit a stationary target! Get it? stationary? *ahem*

The thirty gigajoules of shielding slowly tick down, followed shortly by the hull. I am immediately messaged by that Boron, and told that my pardon has been accepted- my work was exemplary. And indeed, I am a Boron Acquaintance, 50%. I charge the jumpdrive, setting co-ordinates for- I charge the jumpdrive- Why isn't it working, Rabb? And- more to the point- can you fix it?Bob the builder! YES WE CAN!*ahem again* The answer is that it has been tampered with, and that it can't be fixed. Brilliant- stranded in a most definitely active Xenon sector, after doing the orbital equivalent of kicking a wasp's nest. Let's go, people. Krek, shoot anything that moves. If it isn't moving, wait 'til it does. Then shoot it. Here we go! I think I see a Q at the gate. CHARGE! The Q's shields fall to 30% before it can turn to face us- obviously a rushed rapid-responce force, hastily equipped, if machines can be hasty. Now, GIVE ME RAMMING SPEED! CHAARGE! *bong.... BOOM!* Y'arr! That was fun! Shields at 50%. And now for a long, boring journey through an empty Xenon sector. Ugh. Hang on.. Not empty- they're Pirates! What're they doing here? Whatever. They don't seem to want to kill me, so I'll leave them alone. They're on their way to the marauder- long trek, guys... But anyway, I'll be having words with that Boron when we get to the EQ dock.

Well that just takes the cake! I file an official complaint onboard the local dock, and the little squid tells me it's of no concern to the Boron kingdom- they know nothing about it! Well, who else could it have been? Not my crew- I think they're about as trustworthy as any Pirate(Very, so long as they get their wages and their booze.). Anyway, can't stop- I've got to see a jumpdrive specialist about a blown subspace transverter. Or not. Apparently there's an Argon sector nearby, called Getsu Funé which also has a Xenon problem, and the Argon government will lower my wanted rating if I scout out the neighbouring Xenon sector and destroy any forces which look as if they're gearing up to an invasion. Another one? What idiot wants to try and hold an outpost here, with three Xenon sectors in a five- sector block? Ah well. If it gets me out of the reputation pit I'm in, then the jumpdrive can wait. Let's go. Wow! Foggy. My sub-ethanet reciever's playing nice music though.

And... A K, a J, loads of fighters and three Qs. There's definitely something going on here, so I should throw a spanner in the works. Sounds fun. And again... I'M A-FIRING MAH LAZORZ!

[ external image ]zzap!

[ external image ]Tsshhhhh....(Yes, that is approximately the noise PBCs make)

[ external image ]There it goes...[ external image ][ external image ]BOOM!

[ external image ]Now you see it, now you don't.

The Argon lower my 'wanted' rating as promised, but someone decides to stick some more assignment on to what I just did- last time this sector was cleared, the Xenon came back and ambushed the Argon from the West, leading them to believe that there's another sector somewhere. I need to find it. Another long, boring journey.

[Stay tuned for part two of this chapter. Yes, there is a part two- did I not say it would be a super-mega chapter?]

To continue, I do as asked and fly to the West for a while and, lo and behold, I find a gate. Behind it is an unmapped sector, riddled with asteroids. Inquisitive, I scan some- finding Nividium! And there's quite a wealth of untapped mineral resources lying about too. Maybe a good- what's that? A massive hulk looms out of the darkness. It appears to be the remains of a large factory complex, now decrepit and inoperable. Whatever happened here? Well, it's still a possibility... I fly around, surveying the asteroids some more, when a fighter shows up on my gravidar. A Teladi Falcon Sentinel, a fighter with corvette- level shields. I claim it, but here it must stay for now. I take the two HEPTs it has and fit them to my Carrack, then make for Getsu Funé.

When we arrive, the Argon representative offers thanks, and asks me to dock at the Teladi EQ dock to have free jumpdrive repairs. I still don't have enough favour with the Argon to dock... But at least we get jump capability! I am informed that Black Hole Sun, another Argon outpost, is also plagued by Xenon! What is it with these guys? It's as if they deliberately set up shop next door to the genocidal microchips! Oh well- I can reach that region easily enough through Split space- Thyn's Abyss- so long as I'm careful travelling through Family Njy. Xenon sector 472, here we come! My word... that's one heck of a lot of red...

X472 contains five Qs, a Xenon station, a Xenon shipyard, two Ks, two Js and lots of fighters. This is gonna be one heck of a scrap! Here we go! The Xenon seem to mostly be camping the South Gate, zapping traders foolish enough to try and take a shortcut through here. All I have to fight is one of the Js, but the small size of the sector means backup could arrive in very short order. The J goes up, and I take out an inquisitive Q, but the sheer number of fighters with PBEs begins to drain my shields a worrying amount, so I jump to Thyn's Abyss to recharge, then rejoin the fray. Krek Asimar's sharpshooting dispatches the fighter cloud and I lead the four remaining Qs on a merry dance all around the sector until they're all dead. The last one manages to knock my shields down to 5% though, so I jump out again. Back in Thyn's Abyss, I come across a nasty surprise... The Xenon must have dispatched one of those Ks while I was busy, and it with its fighter contingent is roughing up the locals. We'll soon put a stop to that! [ external image ][ external image ] Y'arr!

K's destroyed, and I return for the last time to Xenon Sector 472- to remove the Xenon's chokehold on commuters here and earn myself freedom with two races- the Split congratulated me on my elimination of the K and promised to give me landing rights if I open up the trade route by destroying the Xenon bases. So that's the Boron, Argon and Split who no longer hate me. Good. Let's finish the job!

[ external image ][ external image ]BOOM! That's their last hope in flames! Let's get 'em!

[ external image ]Double-lasers!
[ external image ]Bird's eye view.

[ external image ][ external image ][ external image ]The reactor's destabilised! There it goes!
[ external image ]Xenon co-ordination station down, that should put the shipyard into emergency lockdown mode! Focus fire on the shipyard!
[ external image ]Yup- that LX can't undock due to the emergency lockdown. It doesn't have long to wait... To freedom! With the shipyard destroyed, the Xenon have lost their hold on this area and trade can move through freely- until next time... There's quite a lot of loot, with a few rare weapons like the Ion Disruptor lying around, so I scoop them up. There's also an M whose AI systems malfunctioned and left it dead in space with two PBEs on board. I capture it and take the guns, flying through into Argon space and seeing a sector of blue- neutral- ships. They were as good as their word, unlike the Boron, who tried to get me killed by sabotaging my jumpdrive! Peaceful my posterior. Now that the Argon like me, I get this message from the Goner, about the Terrans. I'd like to meet Mr. Asimar's race, but I'll have to ask whether he's welcome with them or not first. If not then fair enough- I'll let him keep a low profile. We've come a long way from the bankrupt, desperate Pirates we once were, haven't we? [ external image ]

The local military Outpost is offering a mission to kill some Xenon- what? A rear-guard? A not-so-rapid-responce force? Whatever. It'll earn me money and reputation, which is good. Bring 'em on! Two Ps and some assorted fighter enter th sector, right into my PBCs. They die quickly and I get paid slightly over 1Mcr. Wow! Lotsa cash! Now, let's go to Omicron Lyrae.

I dock at the Omicron Lyrae EQ dock, and am contacted by an Argon. The message follows:

We have quarantined your ship due to the presence of stolen beam weaponry onboard. We must confiscate the ship and weaponry until you can prove that you are trustworthy. We will have finished studying the weapons in three days, so that is the earliest time we can return them or your ship. For its release, you must reach Hero of the Federation rank. You may purchase a Scout ship at the shipyard to leave Omicron Lyrae. Do not return until you can prove your worth. Although, you have done well to get this far- we thought you'd be destroyed when we disabled your jumpdrive remotely while you were working for the Boron. And then, against all odds you destroyed the invasion force near Getsu fune which had been building up for days. You are remarkable, but you are a pirate and we cannot trust you. Good day.

Well, look at that. I take it back about the Boron...

Speaking of which, I'm recieving a message from a Boron named Ybr Ki...

'Hello friend. We have been monitoring you since you reported the jumpdrive damage to us, and intercepted the message that was just sent to you by the Argon. This is repulsive and we must thank you properly for ridding our entire area of Xenon. Please come to the Ocean of Fantasy shipyard to pick up your Heavy Hydra corvette. We have armed it with Ion Pulse Generators, with two salvaged Pirate Plasma Burst Generators, so you cannot pose a serious threat to anyone. We feel that you should be treated fairly, and are making up for the unfairness the Argon just inflicted upon you. Also Note: All Boron shipyards now stock the Lusca heavy M7 designed for maximum anti-capital firepower. Once you have increased your standing with the Kingdom, feel free to try it out!

Score!

Property:

1x flower farm plus Mercury hauler freight shuttle

1xCarrack(in quarantine, not allowed to fly for 3 days and until I have Hero of the Federation Argon rank.)
1x Boron Heavy Hydra(cannot command until I pick it up from OoF)
1x Harrier raider, 'Banshee'
1x Pirate Elite
1x Discoverer, 'Betrayal'
1x Xenon M, on its way to OL shipyard.

Where'd everyone go all of a sudden :? Where are my readers? Maybe I've fiddled around with the game too much...

The Terrans

I fly quickly through the sectors between Omicron Lyrea and Ocean of Fantasy quickly, eager to get out of the very cramped discoverer cockpit- my crew's all in here too and this is only a one-man fighter... Xenon sector 472 seems cowed- it contains precisely one Xenon N, too damaged to keep up with a freighter, never mind my 380m/s Discoverer Vanguard. Still, it's fun to be going this fast again.

At the Boron shipyard, I find the Hydra waiting for me, armed with six IPGs and two PBGs as promised. It also has a jumpdrive, but absolutely no other upgrades- cargo, rudder, engine, fight software- nothing. So its first trip is to the EQ dock for much-needed tweaking. It has two turrets- front-down and back-down, leaving its underside very well covered but its upper face vulnerable. I keep the PBGs in the frontal turret, to add extra firepower to the main array. Oh yeah, I checked the Lusca thing. It costs 47Mcr, so is a little out fo my price range for now...

With my new ride radey to go, I set off North to try and find some missions from the Boron regarding the Xenon I trounced eariler. Nothing, but I do see a Q some way off attacking shipping. In a spirit of goodwill, and hoping for loot, I attack it, taking off 10% of its 4GJ shielding before I run out of laser energy. I then try to 'ride' the Q, staying above it to let my PBG turret damage it while I stay in the gaping blindspot. One problem- the Q turns faster than my Hydra, which despite being fast, is only fast in a straight line. Indeed, it seems suited to running away- the high speed and engine-wrecking IPGs seem to go well together. But still, the Q out-turns me and begins to put PPC shots into my shields. 80%, 60, run away! Weaponry reshuffle! I put two IPGs into the rear turret and the PBGs into my main array, and turn tail. Krek Asimar, again manning the turrets, begins to fire at the Q, reducing its speed while I retreat to a safe distance to recharge my shields, which have dropped to 20%. I keep on making these runs, each time stripping a little more of the Q's shields until I reach the hull. Where I stop- the IPG is awesome against shielding, but has very little effect on hull. I switch them off, slide in behind the Q- risking the PBE fire it sprays at me- and toast it. Its reactor goes critical, and I fly through the nova of its explosion. It leaves absolutely nothing behind. Damn. I pick up some Ecells in Bluish Snout and jump to Omicron Lyrae.

Now, I technically shouldn't be here, but when the Boron gave me this ship, they also rigged it to hide my identity from the Argon so long as I'm not scanned by police and don't draw attention to myself, so I should be able to take that escort mission for the Terrans at the local Trading Station... So far so good- I've been accepted for the mission and the convoy's setting off for Circle of Labour. Still my cover remains intact, and I dispatch the small wing of Pirates who try to impede us. Fools! Why throw away your lives when there's nothing to gain? I mean, it's not like any of these ships is carrying anything interesting, and you can hardly kidnap the Terran diplomat when you have no boarding equipment... Too much space weed- that's the new generation of Pirates, all too drunk or too busy seeing pretty pictures to properly plan a raid. I mean, look at these groups who ransom stations- they don't even bring bombers when they make good their promises, so can't damage the station and immediately get creamed.*grumbles*

We arrive in Heretic's End and dock at the impractically huge Terran Orbital Defence Station. This takes far longer than it should, due to the stupidly long approach path our ships have to take. The Argon escorts shove off, after declining the Terran's offer of a possible contract. The leader says 'We Argon do not hold with side-switching, ma'am' Speak for yourself, idiot- I do. Now, about that job...
