Brief Background:

My name is Mingan Nyx, for the last 3 years I've been the CEO of Black Sun Enterprises. Ever since my father 'mysteriously' vanished. Of course I was extensively questioned about it. Owner of a huge company disappears leaving his only child hundreds of millions of credits, and in charge of one of the largest corporations around. Before they seized our assets BSE had stations in 30 sectors with roughly 15,000 ships on it's payroll.

Now look at us, for the past few years it's just been a constant grind to make the cash, over the past week I've assembled a small fleet... BSE now officially owns 210 ships, not counting my personal M7, 1 headquarters, and 5 trading stations. The sectors we used to call 'ours' have mostly been reclaimed only what we once deemed our core sectors remains. I've got enough cash left to set up a decent complex but I'll wait a couple days to decide where I want to put it, and what I want it to produce.

Mingan sighed, looking through the holo-logs of his 'empire' was depressing. Over the past couple days he'd been loosing more money then he'd been making, the rookie miner's he'd hired doing a terrible job, his universe traders barely making enough credits to pay for the fighter pilots, and his fighter pilots were sloppily letting Split through their lines.

This whole nonsense with the split was absurd too, when they heard that he was rebuilding his fleet they declared war on BSE, that's right, a government declared war on a private corporation. It was absurd, and since he didn't know why they did it, he didn't have any idea how to make peace with them. Ever since his father had disappeared things had stopped making sense.

Mingan knew exactly where his father was, well, at least what planet his father was on, but he had promised him he wouldn't tell anyone. With another heavy sigh Mingan pulled up the data on his father:
Nebula Nyx
Date of Birth: Unknown
Race: Argon
Sex: Male
Date of Death: Missing, presumed dead as of 07/22/764
With a wry laugh Mingan turns off the holo-viewer and stands walking through the door of his cabin and onto the bridge of his 'flagship' a custom built Argon Griffon. Just before he had left his father spent more credits then his fleet was currently worth to have this thing built. She was a beauty of a ship, her hull coated in an anti radar black paint, probably the only reason it wasn't seized, and brilliant crimson letters on the side reading: BSE Battle Angel. A quick glance at the small crew told him that everything was in order, a grand total of 5 other 'people' called this ship home, all but one of them Argon.

Benjamin Chance, the current helmsman who everyone calls Ogre. Ogre is a small scrawny looking man not even out of his teens yet, but one of the best pilots Mingan had ever met. His nickname came not from his size but from the fact that when it came to doing anything other then piloting he did it with all the grace and skill of an ogre.

Jade, the 'weapons master' as she dubbed it. Half the galaxy believed that she could hit a m5 from 5km away with an Incendiary Bomb Launcher. Of course she wasn't going to tell them that it wasn't true, but she was a decent gunner, and even better in close combat. Which was why they'd given her the nickname Blade, their saying was “she's always got one on her.”

Jacob McViel, more machine then man he was rarely seen outside of the engine room, having had most of his body cyberneticly replaced he was ideally suited for both internal and external ship repairs. He was an imposing figure if you didn't know him or what a softy he was. The rest of the crew called him squid because he was terrified of the Boron.

Einstein, the science officer, and for good reason, able to make near instantaneous mathematical calculations in his head the man was absolutely brilliant. However in his brilliance he might be a little bit mad, no member of the crew could even tell you Einstein's real name, let alone favorite food, planet he was from, anything.

The final and most odd member of the crew wasn't technically a living being. The Xenon entity 61a2e who the crew fondly referred to as Blaze. His father had picked it up out of the remains of a Xenon Q that was found embedded into an asteroid just outside the newly found gate to Terran space. Upon connecting it to the BSE historical database Blaze went through a radical change in mindset. His goals have changed from “terraform all planets” to “spread the truth to all xenon” and “beat Einstein at chess.”

a xenon character given compassion. I like that.
The skunk really is a bare bones model. It doesn't even have a GPS to highlight the way. Or targeting software MK 2 to allow target selection and painting from the sector map. It lacks a Trading System Extention to show prices in the sector you are in. The lack of satellites in rebirth is also annoying to the trader/pirate looking for a mark.

Glancing around the room Mingan slowly walks towards Jade, she's dancing a blade across her fingers while reading something, her short vibrant red hair flashing off the blade. Leaning in close Mingan glances over her shoulder at a long list of ships, glancing again at the knife he asks calmly “What's going on?” To which she turns and looks at him slipping the blade back into it's sheath.

“Apparently our TL has vanished, and I mean straight up vanished, along with it's full load of ore. Left it it's place were 10 unarmed Falcon Haulers, equipped like UT's” Her expression is one of disbelief but Mingan takes the news in stride.

“Just vanished? Commission a Mammoth from the Argon Shipyard in Argon Prime, send the Falcon's there and sell them.” He turned slowly glancing out the front of the bridge. “Have the mammoth outfitted with a jumpdrive and some energy cells, the purchase a FDN (freight distribution network) XL node, a FDN Trade Post, and a Trading Station from the Argon Prime Shipyard. Drop all three of those in Savage Spur. Send the miners there also and tell them to drop their freight at the node and mine in that sector. Freely sell the ore from the trade post and buy Cahoonas, BoFu, and Soja husks to distribute to our trading stations to feed the workers.” He turned back towards his cabin.

“And send out a message to all races that any non-split can set up factories in our sectors, of course for a small tax.” With that he calmly walked into his cabin, within seconds what appeared to be a teenage girl with blue-green hair and matching eyes materialized in the center of the room. Without bothering to look Mingan simply asked “what do you need Blaze?”

“I'm just concerned about opening our sectors to building, your father didn't make many friends when he attacked the Paranid, and 4 out of our 5 sectors were once theirs, if you allow them to build then not only are you allowing them to reclaim some of what they lost, you're essentially giving them the go ahead to move military personnel into our sectors. From there it would be a simple process for them to retake the sectors, especially with our weakened state.” 'Her' voice was light and musical, warm like the sound of a crackling flame, and her arguments made sense, but Mingan was already shaking his head.

“Yes the Paranid may hold a grudge against us, but we have a treaty signed by the Priest Emperor himself, they won't dare attack us for fear of dishonoring him until the treaty has expired. For the next year at the very least we're fine. To top it off the Paranid are slow to attack, they will wait until they feel the time is right. What we need to worry about now is the split, their military could crush us right now, and I'm surprised they haven't attempted it yet.”

Mingan shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head lightly sending his waist length white hair flying, “Let the other races make money for us, let them eat our food, populate our sectors, buy what our miners mine. They will pay for our sector defenses. Start planning a microchip factory, that should make us some money quickly. It's like a more complex game of chess Blaze, except in this one the pawns give you money to buy more pieces, the more you have the better off you are.”

Beware of the mighty Split. Thier ships speed and heavy armaments make them EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I've seen the Split CRUSH the argon during an attempt at crossing Split space with a small fleet that included a M1, M2, M7, 2 M6, and about 10 fighters.

yes their military is scary. In my game I make a point of having robbed everyone but them....well except I stole some elepahnts from them when i didn't feel like forking over 10 M for them but I barely got away with my prizez and that is the point.

The parianid are a bunch of over confident pushovers. If you cough loud enough you might defeat their whole empire! As for the borons all you have to do is look scary and they will eject in mass. It's true. The boron are scardie fish!

“Speaking of money” Mingan turned and walked back onto the bridge, his voice shifting from normal tones to what his father referred to as a 'captains voice' he called out; “Ogre activate the jumpdrive, target sector Kingdoms End. Blade warm up the weapons.” He sat in his chair and pushed a button on the arm “Squid we're about to jump, prepare for possible need of damage control.” Letting go of the button he glanced back at the young man standing on the far side of the bridge. “Einstein let me know about anyone offering combat missions in Boron space, and/or any hostiles detected. Blaze,” 'She' materialized next to him, “keep an eye out for any of your friends if the xenon decide to invade a Boron sector I want to be gone before they get there unless it's only a small force.”

Within a matter of seconds the ship was inside a warptunnel, not even a half second after Blade had fired off a singe shot from each weapon mounted on the ship. 4.5 seconds later they were coming through the south gate of Kingdom's end. The sector was it's usual quiet self, then Einstein's voice broke the silence, “No threats captain but numerous stations are selling ship blueprints, a little over 12 mil to buy them all.”

“Which bp's are they selling Einstein?”

“Mako, Mako Vanguard, Barracuda Raider, Barracuda Vanguard, Pike, and Hydra.”

Nodding to each name Mingan looks back out the bridge window. “Buy them all. Ogre take us through the east gate.”

“No problem cap'n” The lanky youth replied with a voice that was like sandpaper. Deftly executing a 90 degree turn with an easy manner that implied he could do the same in a M1 or M2 if given the chance. The gate was straight ahead of them and with the speed of Battle Angel they were rapidly approaching it.

“Hey Blaze?” Mingan said without looking away from the window, “Remind me later to get some ships to drop Adv. Sats out here.” Mingan laughed as they entered the gate, the blue light of the warptunnel outshining even the white lights of the cockpit. Barely out of the warptunnel Einstein started to speak.

“Nothing worth looking at her, a couple people wanting rides is all. I recommend we head through the east gate and check the next sector.” Mingan smiled thoughtfully.

“Do what he says Ogre, we're looking to blow things up, not taxi them around.” That was all that needed to be said, a few minutes later they were in yet another warptunnel. “See I hate warp, there's nothing to look at, and it gets repetitive after the first time.”

“I found one captain!” Einstein sounded excited, “A three sector patrol between here and Teladi Gain. The base reward for it is shit but like most patrol missions they say they'll pay extra per kill, should I sign us...” His voice cut off as he looked up at Mingan's broad grin. “Applying for job sir,” a couple seconds went by before the since console beeped, “they've accepted our application.”

With a hoot a joy Blade leaned forward and pulled on a helmet that allowed her to control all the ships weapons at once, then looked over at Ogre. “What the hell you waiting for boy? It's killing time, get this bird moving!” Ogre just turned and looked at Mingan.

“You guys don't need me to tell you what to do, I know you can all handle flying this baby in combat. Do what you've been trained to do.”

Eleven Hours and 470 Million Credits Later

Mingan stood, turning and walking back to his cabin, “take us home Ogre. Blaze contact the fleet, I want every available combat ship into Rhy's Desire within the hour, their orders are to kill everything, all ships, both military and civilian as well as all stations. I want the mammoth in fifteen minutes later to drop a trading station and claim the sector as ours, then start bringing the stations we need for a flail and microchip complex.

“Thirty minutes after that when the Split have realized we mean business and have the power to defend the sector then let me know and I'll contact them to negotiate a 'truce.'” Mingan smiled, “within the day we'll have the complex running or have lost the entire fleet.” He turned again stepping back out of his cabin, “Find us one more combat mission, a few extra credits never hurt anyone right?” With a mischievous grin he walked back into his cabin the door sliding shut behind him with it's usual snap-hiss sound.

15 Minutes Later

Alarms were screaming the mission that they'd taken had dropped them in the middle of an ambush, the gate that should have taken them into the 'unknown sector' to the east of PTNI headquarters had instead dropped them into a truly unknown sector, littered with hundreds of ship carcasses. The stabilized wormhole that the gate ran off of flickered and died as soon as their ship was clear. Their shields were down and at least 4 boarding pods were on their way, and without a gate to lock onto they were sitting ducks for the fleet of pirate M6, M7, and M7M that surrounded them. For the past couple minutes Blaze had been hacking the gate in an attempt to reopen the wormhole.

The crew was armed the sentry lasers were activated, and every trap his father had rigged the ship with was primed. This wouldn't be a fight without casualties for the pirates, but unless that gate came back up Mingan and the rest of the crew wouldn't survive. Four loud bangs like someone hitting a giant gong off in the back end of the ship sounded, followed by the screaming of metal as the pods cut their way through the hull. Thirty seconds later the screaming stopped, the pirates were on-board. Blaze materialized in the back of the room as the cockpit was flooded with blue light, everyone except Blaze turned as the wormhole reopened. “OGRE GET US THE HELL OUT OF HERE!” Mingan bellowed as the sounds of the sentry lasers and mens screams filled the ship.

With it's typical small lurch the ship was inside a warptunnel, Ogre having used the jumpdrive instead of manually flying through the gate. They all breathed a sigh of relief, but they weren't out of this yet, there were at least 20 pirates on the ship and if they were smart they'd cut their way to the bridge after witnessing the first couple traps.

5 Minutes Later

The wall beside the door that separated the bridge from the rest of the ship glowed white hot, the pirates almost had their doorway cut through. The crew stood ready, Blaze had them each cloaked in a hologram making it appear as though the bridge were empty. Empty of everything except a beautiful blue-eyed blue-haired teen girl. Blaze's avatar didn't look a day over 15 and the way she curled up in the corner by the window of the bridge made in look like everyone had abandoned ship, and forgotten to take her along.

The pirates kicked the wall in and stormed through momentarily stunned that the room was empty. One, most likely the commander, noticed Blaze and slowly made his way towards her his weapon at the ready. “Stand up!” he barked his voice betraying amusement as Blaze stood. Glancing over Blaze he obviously assumed her tightly woven low cut dress couldn't possibly hide a weapon. But Blaze didn't need a weapon she had a whole crew to back her up. With an evil smile on her face Blaze's form suddenly twisted, changing from that of a beautiful girl into a terrible demon, complete with the fire, in a state of shock several of the pirates dropped their weapons and ran screaming back towards the boarding pods. Back to where Squid would have taken up position to kill them when they did. The commander turned and screamed, the claws of the demon closing over his head.

Of course, Blaze couldn't physically manipulate objects inside the ship, that's why Mingan was standing behind her with a sword, a sword with a vibration cell, and a 2 ½ nanometer thick serrated blade. He cut through the commanders head three times, once for each claw the demon had. More men screamed and started to open fire, none of the shots were aimed though, and the rest of the crew cut them down before they got a chance to focus on the core of the demon.

Two Minutes and Thirty Seconds Later

Blaze stood in front of the one survivor back in her human form. “Let me put this a way you can understand” she practically was singing with the amount of glee she had in her musical voice “if you don't tell me who hired you to ambush us, I'll eat you.”

The man shuddered, “I don't know who it was, I was just told to come here and help take the ship, I don't know anything about who hired us, all I know is they want the crew of this ship dead badly enough to have sent a bomb with us. They only actually sent the squad here to capture the ship and make some extra credits on the deal.” Mingan whispered something that he knew the mad wouldn't hear but blaze would.

“Can you defuse this bomb?” She asked, her voice still holding the mocking tone of someone who doesn't believe they can die.

“NO!” The man yelled, his eyes wide, “now let me get out of here before this whole ship goes up.”

“Blaze” Mingan said loud enough that everyone could hear it as he slit the man's throat. “Let Squid know we're abandoning ship.” He thought for a second. “How long has it been since the boarding pods hit the ship?”

“Twenty-seven minutes, and forty-five seconds.” She tilted her head at him quizzically.

Mingan just shook his head, “warp us to Argon Prime, East Gate, then eject your core from the main computer. We're abandoning ship, and I'm not letting you go up with it.”

She just nodded before disappearing as the ships jump countdown started. Mingan knelt down by the captains chair as it slid to the side and reached into the now exposed mass of glowing lights, pulling out a cylinder that glowed brighter then all the rest, the looked up as Squid stepped onto the bridge. “Everyone into the pods, we're getting out as soon as we're not in a warptunnel”

Everyone just nodded before running to a series of hatches on the left wall of the cockpit and climbing in, two people per pod, that was standard procedure on any ship. Mingan and Blaze slid into the last one as the warptunnel collapsed. Mingan was un-docking the pod as soon as it's hatch had slid shut, autopilot then taking over and flying it towards the Federal Argon Shipyard.

the bomb was a bluff. i would tie him to a table and pull out his toenails one by one with a pair of plyers untill he told me where it was. I wouldn't touch his hands because marines are good at engineering and he can probalbly diffuse it.

That or inject him with water and tell him he has to tell you where the bomb is or you won't administer the antidote.

or get a rubber hammer and a towell as a pad and bang on his kneecaps.

But for starters blindfold the victem and beat them with a bar of soap in a towell and soak them with Ice water to keep them concious.

And of course in the event the bomb was real and had say, a 30 minute timer? The story would become rather short don't you think?

hmm..... right. maybe it is real. All hands abandon ship. Still policy dictates all prisoners are to be dumped in xenon space it they will not talk. My policy anyway. Being assimilated is usually enough of a threat to get them to talk.

My policy is much simpler. Once the prisoner has outlived his usefulness, x-terminate ^.^ him/her. Saves e-cells that way.

well it would be against the pirate code of ethics to outright kill them. No one wants to be directly responcible for murder. So dumping them in the middle of an xenon sector gives them some chance of being rescued according to The Hitchhikers Guide to The Universe.. the first book. There is a thin chance in hell of them being rescued but I'm no murderer. All my victems get a chance to surrender and all prisoners get set free.
