[TC] Lag and freezes

I'm experimenting lag spark and frequently freezes since I started to play X3TC.

In the last few days I went in heavy populated sector and I started doing missions with more opponents... game became near to unplayable, with strong lag spark.

Mainly it seems happening when a number of objects enter in visual range (this includes when a big ship starts firing with all her guns also), and the game needs to load a huge amount of data from HDs.

Of course this has a huge bad impact on playability: having a 2 or 3 seconds freeze when you are flying away from an M6 in an M3 is not the best thing you can imagine to improve playability :evil:

I triple checked my systems and it seems OK, but before declaring X3TC one of the worst programmed/optimized game I ever played I wanna make a try in asking Egosoft "Techs" help :wink:

Following my PC technical specs:

CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66GHz (I tried also overclocking it at 3.2GHz... no improvement)
RAM 4GB DDR2 800MHz CL4
MB Asus P5Q Pro
VGA ATI HD3870 512MB GDDR4 (also a bit of overclock here... no change)
Audio Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer
HD: 1 SATA2, 1 SATA and 1 IDE
Operating System: Windows Vista HP 64bit
Operating System and X3TC are on separate HDs, my personal data are on the third HD, moreover I defregment them very often

I want to make clear that after the lag spark the game runs fine, with decent FPS... till next load from HD. :evil:

Oh, about the audio, I tried using Alchemy (that doesn't officially support X3TC) and not using it, I also tried disabling EAX effects... no impact :cry:

My fault, forgot to mention:

I have installed the latest driver for every hardware component in my system; obviously Vista is SP1.
So 9.1 hotfix stand for ATI Catalyst 9.1.

I also disabled ffshow, of course.

Triple keyb depends on my G11 is seen as two keybs and, for a period, I used another keyb... now this isn't installed anymore, of course.

Try disabling the onboard sound in your BIOS. Looks pretty clean otherwise to me. Congrats on the largest number of partitions I've seen in a non-server. :)

Just out of curiosity what ship are you flying in when you get pauses? For me I don't get anymore pauses, except once in a rare occasion I still get one only if I'm flying the Heavy Nemesis.

When I first started X3 it was constantly pausing. Now only very few times only with the Nemesis it seems. I don't know exactly what I did that improved it. I tried several things on my computer like;
-Disabled onboard Realtek audio in Bios
-Ran CFF explorer >2gb switch
-disabled audio and video FFshow X3TC codecs
-updated my sound card drivers for my creative sound card( I updated them 9 months ago, but recently noticed it had a 2006 date on them?)
-Ran two programs;codecfixer and codectweaktool 231(that supposedly fixes codecs)
-Ran Installedcodec(a program that can disable Nero codecs(Be very careful because my Anti-Malware program A-Squared keeps telling me now the file contains malicious malware, and I got it from www.download.com which says the program is 100% spyware free! so I have find another program or site.)
-update my graphics driver
-let X3TC handle the graphic settings,not Catalyst(so in other words I always put 'Let application decide')
-I have my page file set at 2048 minimum and 4080 maximum

I probaly did a few more things but can't remember now.

Anyways download programs from the internet at own risk, so don't blame me if something bad happens.



Note: I just emailed Download.com and nirsoft about the malicious malware attached to their file and am waiting for a reply. Last week I tried downloading a program called RSIT and scanned it with my Antivirus. It said there was a backdoor virus attached to the file. I sent an email to them and they replied "Trust Us, there is no virus"? Trust Us? I don't think so.

I tried with 3GB patch: it seems to go better... a lot better :o

I need some more tests, but first impression is good.

It seems this game needs a lot of memory, and the 2GB per process limit of Win 32bit is a huge limitation... at a moment I was using over than 2.6GB :o
Another chance is that some poor programmings cause memory not be released when no more necessary ;)

Has anyone tried Defraging their Pagefile?

I was aware of 3rd party page file defraggers, but didn't want to spend money. Sysinternals has a free one and I thought I'd give it a try.

It takes about 3-4 minutes to run after reboot.
I reran X3TC using Fraps, and flew around Seezewell with my Heavy Neomosis and glow enabled and settings on high as usual.

I noticed I got the same frame rate as I measured before, but.........it flew smoother. I could tell.
I think because it was accessing the hard drive but not the graphics card or cpu at the time. So its better, I'd just I'd mention it.

Something else I noticed, examing my computer, I don't think the store I purchased it from installed the correct Hard driver drivers. In my device manager it says IDE but I believe its supposed to be SATA.
I've read that Win xp doesn't natively recognise SATA and must be installed with a floppy. So I ran a couple of speed tests, One was Barts Test. It said 40mbs. But the specifications for my SATA II hard drive are anywhere between 100-300mbs? So I may have to reinstall...........

My paging file is in a dedicated partition and is fixed in size (about 2GB), so it doesn't need any defragmentation ;)

Moreover I have 4GB on a 64bit operating system, so I have enough RAM to run a 32bit videogame and all the background services without the need of accessing the swap file.

Despite this, only thing that improved performance for me was the "3GB patch"... overclocking CPU and GPU didn't have any effect about lag&freeze problem.

I was wondering about implementing this "patch" as a standard features on 64bit operating systems on a future patch (not on 32bit ones, cause 3GB is unsupported by Microsoft on 32bit "client" Windows).

What graphics settings are you using?

Yesterday I bumped down my textures to medium and turned off AF because of lag spikes.

My CPU is an E6750 (so more or less comparable to your E8200)
My GPU is an ATI 4870 1GB...

As an aside: rumour has it that the 9.2 Catalysts will be released this week perhaps that will sort things a bit...

As I said granting to X3 access to 3GB of memory, instead of standard 2GB, solved all my performance problems.

I have enough RAM, so that shouldn't be an issue...
(Prices for DDR2 these days are a joke :D )
