Your sound driver is pushing 7 years old - there's almost certainly a newer driver.

However, from your description about losing power, my guess that the real problem here would be that your power supply is on the way out.

TC Problem.

Post by arnak »

Hi,

The first thing to do is to go into start, control panel, system, advanced, start up and recovery and in there make sure that shutdown on error is unchecked.

Then go into the control panel, administrative tools, event log.

Check in there for any errors relating to TC.

Please copy the full error message and paste it here please.

Thanks for the replies, here is what I have done so far:
The old SB Live card, that stopped being supported a few years ago has been removed, and drivers un-installed, not that there was a problem with it, just lack of drivers, I now use the on-board sound, with the latest drivers installed.

If the PSU was faulty it would also fail at other times, not only when I load TC, and it isn't too old, and more than enough for my System.

arnak, when you say 'shutdown on error is unchecked' I am assuming you are referring to 'Automatically restart' as that is the only option close in startup & recovery, and yes it is unchecked, one of the first things I do when I install windows! ;)
And there is absolutely no reference to TC in the Event Viewer!

The problem still persists, the game still kills the power on my system as soon as it loads up, before I can select new game/continue etc..

Thanks again for any help.

TC is quite stressful on a PC, and will cause system components to work harder, resulting in a higher power draw from the PSU. If your PSU is borderline, it could be enough to push it into failure. You could test this theory by running some system stress test utility - it should be fairly easy to find one (free) via google.

eladan is spot on with that, there is also a chance to see exactly what is wrong by using a motherboard utility, specifically one that checks the voltages. The ATX specification allows for a rather significant variance in voltage (on the 3.3v, 5v and 12v rails), but it is very easy for a PSU to be pushed over...been there and done that. Just out of interest what PSU do you have?

Hi there. The same happens to me, but with X3:Reunion (as I do not have TC installed yet), with "medium" settings all over. It costed me a HDD in a year of applying the "press power button for 5 seconds to shut down the PC." advice. The Vista performance index program crashes the PC the same way, so yes, I assume it's all about loss of power when loading textures and whatnot. I do not give it up though, having managed to do some things that improved the X-perience.
1. I struggle on an AGP 7600 nVidia card/256MB (boy I'm ancient! :D ). I increased the Graphic Aperture in BIOS to 128MB, from 64, making room for extra video work in the 3GB RAM that the PC has.
2. I change the priority of the X3.exe process to "High" in Task Manager, as I understand the CPU is more stressed than the GPU both during Reunion and TC. This one I perform while the first menu window (the one with buttons for settings, check for update, start etc.) is displayed.
3. I do not wait for the intro video to go far, I press Enter about 1 second of play, go straight to the game menu, which I do not look long at because it also seems to cause CTD for some other people. From now on until I enter a game, either new or saved, I press the keys rather rapidly
4. I've also toned down the frequency of the monitor, from 75Hz to 70, on an 1024x768 in-play setting and 1280x1024 otherwise.
With these settings and an extra fan inside the case (that keeps on miraculously working after each crash), Reunion didn't crash in a week... I am not completely illogical as to assume that this is due exclusively to this combination of settings, but things came out definitely better after applying them. Also, I assume a new PC would be required in order to be able to play TC. Cheers.

I hate to say this, but it does sound like a PSU fault, how old is it, the reason im asking is that While the PSU may have been adequate when put into the PC they loose about 10% of theyre output each year, so after a few years may struggle to power a pc that it was previously powering no problem. I recently spent 3 weeks chasing a problem with a friends pc, which was randomly crashing or locking up whenever he ran WOW, but reunion and crysis ran fine on it for hours. but it only did it whle at his, it ran stress tests fine for up to 72 hours at mine, so we thought it might be his power in his house, and bought a UPS, problem continued. We replaced the case fitted PSU with a higher amperage one and the problem was solved. froms 30A to 72 still only a 600W though. However when first built the psu was capable of supplying everything the pc needed even though it was actually pulling more amps than the psu was rated for, when the supply was swapped it was tested and within a month had lost 30% of its efficiency hence the issues appearing.

The PSU is a Trust 570W and is about a year old.

For some reason Sandra can't read my system monitor chip, so haven't got any results from stress tests, although they seem to run OK.

It is weird that this only happens when I try and load TC.
Everything else runs perfect and have no problems with Crysis, Tomb Raider Underworld, Dead Space, Far Cry 2 or Fallout 3 to name but a few of the games that run well on my machine, with no problems at all.

I am guessing that I just can't play TC any more :(
And I really don't want to risk too much dammage to my HDD by the power being killed whenever I try and load it!

What a waste of £30 :'(

TC Problem.

Post by arnak »

Hi,

If you are really convinced that it is the power supply you could try testing that theory by unplugging any usb devices, disconnecting the power supply for any extra drives that are not required for TC.

It does seem strange to me that starting a game, even one that is cpu intensive as TC is that it should kill the power supply?

The only thing that I would think is that one of the power supply lines is near the limit of it's available amperage so reducing the load may be a good test.

Just had a quick look online for the Trust 570W psu and nowhere can i find information on the +12V rail amperage. The info should be sitting on the grey sticker on the psu. I have emailed Trust's helpdesk to ask what the specs are on that PSU, but apparently its up to 72 hours for a reply. Personally i have never had hardware fail due to sudden loss of power, but i have had it fail when power is restored after a sudden loss hence having a nice Surge Protector with everything plugged into it, Will be getting a UPS when i can afford one.

this is a common misconception.

the amount of power the pc uses is dependant on what hardware is running in the pc and what the pc is actually doing.

simply running the computer in windows, doing browsing and general pc stuff, doesn't use anywhere near the power things like games would use.

games generally require more processing being done, which means your hardware is requiring more power to run. For example, the more you use the graphics card, the more power it demands.

Unlike most games, TC is very demanding on both the CPU and GPU, which means both of them require more power than usual which is y you dont see this issue normally.

simply stopping playing TC isn't the solution, as there is something seriously wrong with your pc that TC is just highlighting.

The usual cause is lack of power, but it could be some other hardware that is damage and causing the computer to crash.

some ppl dont relise the importance of having a good PSU in the computer and generally try to save some money by getting a cheap one. Many cheap PSU's quote thier power rating as its maximum rating, not its normal rating like the more expensive ones do. This means that althou it states 570, in realitity, its very unlikly it will ever go that high

OK, here is the info on the PSU, copied to the best of my ability, just in case it helps:

Code: Select all

--------------------------------------------------
| AC INPUT | 230V/46-63HZ/3A |
|-----------|------------------------------------|
| | +3.3V | +5V | +12V1 | +12V2 | -12V |
| |------------------------------------|
| | 32A | 30A | 16A | 16A | 1.0A |
| |------------------------------------|
| DC OUTPUT | 360W | 192W | 192W | 12W |
| |------------------------------------|
| | max combined output 570W |
--------------------------------------------------
I am still not convinced the PSU is to fault, I shall try and reduce the consumption further by removing my slave drive, and disconect un-used USB devices and try again, watch this space!

thanks thats what i was after, and it makes me almost positive that it is the PSU causing the problems.

as the pc that was randomly crashing was almost the exact same spec as mine

but i had a beefier psu

we swapped his for

I give up! :(

I just tried my system stripped, only 1 HDD no USB devices plugged in except my mouse and joystick, and the soundcard was removed yesterday.
Un-installed and then re-installed TC, which takes forever, patched to 1.3
Still exactly the same, as soon as the game menu loads the power is instantly killed!
Surely the menu can’t use that many resources can it?

If my machine was failing at other times or when I had it under heavy load, I would be more inclined to replace the PSU! But this problem only ever happens in TC!

I really can't budget for a new PSU just to play one game!
And I am still unconvinced that it is cause of the problem, as games with higher requirements still run fine!

a game on its own will not cause the computer to power down, blue screen or reboot. So the problem is usually faulty hardware or bad drivers.

but all games do different things and stress pcs in different ways. So some games will show up these problems and others wont.

the requirements specified on the games doesn't really show you how much a game is going to push your computer, just what is needs to get the game running, they are 2 very different things.

im pretty sure none of the games you listed previously will push your CPU as much as TC does.

if it was really a bug in the game, then surely it would be happening to everyone not just a few ppl ?

Is there someone you know that has a higher ampage power supply you could borrow because if you could borrow one that would either confirm or deny the psu theory.

Nope I don't have anyone I can borrow one from and the only other PSU I have is only 400W with just one 16A 12 rail, and no output for my HDD.

Thanks anyway

I think you'll need to take your PC to someone with the ability to test it. There's only so much you can do on your own.

While I'd still rate the PSU high on my list of probable culprits, it's possible some other component is misfiring in a way that causes this. I can't say absolutely and definitely that a driver issue can't cause this, although I've not seen it happen myself, and it would have to be a rather unusual issue. There is absolutely no way the game can cause this, so you can rule it out immediately.
