Noob here...looking for mods/add-ons that are considered "MUSTS"

I'm new to this game, and I must start by saying that this universe is absolutely beautiful and I'm fully looking forward to playing in it. :D

I'm looking for mods and add-ons that you, the x3 community, think are necessary.

I usually try to play a game through and then after beating it add mods and such.

That never happens with this game though. Just yesterday I broke down and got the "Beam Dock" mod to dock TS ships in carriers and other bigger vessels.

I also just got the "Realspace Backgrounds Mod" which adds sweet looking backgrounds to the game. Doesn't change gameplay just, to me, makes it look more spacey.

I want to get the XTM mod, which in 5 minutes of being on this forum you will realize it is one of the most popular and well done, but I currently have a vanilla game on the go and am still learning everything there. I don't need MORE wares to trade :P

If I were you, I would play the game a little, decide what you think is missing or what you would like to do but can't, and then search and look on these forums for some solutions. Looking for mods/scritps is very fun actually... Hmmm what do I want to change today.

It all depends what you want though. do you want more ships? More systems? more speed, money?!?

To others, is there a site that has a decent listing of mods/scripts or is the forums still the best place to get them?

If you have a higher end machine I recommend the "increased visibility" scripts. They ramp up the maximum draw distance in game and also change the nebula effect to make navigation easier. This will stop things like asteroids 'fading in' in very large sectors.

If you're the opposite, I recommend the "No Civs and Taxis" script, which removes all civilian traffic (freighters and fighters remain, only those useless M5 with no weapons get deleted). This can give up to 50% increase in performance in heavily populated sectors.

I also recommend the "M6 Rebalanced (Pock Destroyer)" scripts, which turn the M6 class Corvette ships into something thats actually useful. Search through the forum for many, many topics on the utter incompetence of the M6 class.

  • At first apply the latest patch 2.5 from here.
  • Then I would install the official Bonus Pack 3.1.0.7.
  • I would further suggest you the XTM 0.73 mod. Many new ships, improvements and a far larger universe to explore.
  • Use Cycrow's Plugin Manager for installation of the .spk-files. Or simply follow the instructions in my first link.
  • You can also install further ships with this mod. But note that not all ships are compatible with the XTM mod. I have installed some ships from Star Trek and Stargate. Look in the forum for the related threads.

I can't find the "increased visibility" one anywhere on the forum search or library. Is it under a different name?

This is especially good advice if you're thinking of XTM. Play the vanilla game until you are pretty good fighting pirates and Xenon. Then install XTM and you may have a fair chance at survival. :twisted:
