Hang on, you've said two conflicting things here. Closer to the top you have said 'now you need to vote for your own screens to' but in the example it puts 'your screen' as 'N/A'.fiksal wrote:my 3D glasses are shutter glasses

polls are now open!
here are the judging rules:
Judging is open. Everyone can vote.
The polls will be open until July 12 2007
Here are few rules:
- Everyone can vote
- Have to vote for all screenshots *
- No cheating
- Do not assign the same place for two (or more) entries
* now you'll need to vote for your own screenshots too
How to vote:
Assign a number to each of the screenshots within a category, starting from 1. Where 1 - is the first place.
For example:
===
Ships
#1 : 4 <- the last
#2 : 1 <- the best entry
#3 : 3 <- 3rd
#4 : 2 <- 2nd best
===
Example # 2, where 3rd entry is your own entry:
===
Ships
#1 : 3 <- the last
#2 : 1 <- the best entry
#3 : N/A
#4 : 2 <- 2nd best
===
The winner will be the one with the lowest score.
Use this ballot

er......
not that it matters vastly but,
I'm thinking you were right in previous contests where the
author didn't vote for their own entry(ies). As long as the
no-vote did not count as a zero, but just didn't affect the final
score at all ie the final score for an entry was eg
(vote1 + vote2 + vote3)/3
not
(0 + vote1 + vote2 + vote3)/4
'cos the latter would give a better, lower score, especially with a low number of voters.
(or was the latter method used after all?)
Anyway, in previous contests, I have thought that other entries were better than mine.
Not too worried about it
, but just surprised by the change.

actually the author's vote for the own was counted as 0, but it really didnt matter,Dave Toome wrote:er......

the problem I see here that, say we have
entry 1 :
entry 2 :
entry 3 :
your 4 :
previously, zero(same as N/A, same as ignoring, same as the "best entry") didnt matter, since every other vote was shifted by one...
entry 1 : 2
entry 2 : 1
entry 3 : 3
your 4 : 0(or NA)
now though, if I still go with zero, then it'll actually bump your entries:
entry 1 : 2
entry 2 : 1
entry 3 : 3
your 4 : 0(or NA)
your 5 : 0(or NA)
your 6 : 0(or NA)
since 4,5,6 all share the same place...
so... one solution is to let you all vote for your own entries...
or at least, you have to vote if you have more than one entry, but I dont like exceptions to the general rules

Wouldn't it be better for the score for 4, 5 & 6 just not to have the 0entry 1 : 2
entry 2 : 1
entry 3 : 3
your 4 : 0(or NA)
your 5 : 0(or NA)
your 6 : 0(or NA)
(N/A) value not included in their final score ?
I know it's a little more work to average out a list of values while ignoring
some of them (do you use Excel, or average them by hand?) but it should be more 'accurate' that way

but ignoring the value is same as 0, if the vote is counted... or do you mean not to even consider the vote for entries 4, 5 and 6 at all?Dave Toome wrote:Wouldn't it be better for the score for 4, 5 & 6 just not to have the 0entry 1 : 2

that'd be tricky to keep track off...
I use Excel
... so I did a little bit of counting,
if we count averages only and dismiss votes for your own stuff completely, then entering your vote will always lower the overall average of your entries...
doesnt seem to be fair to "punish" for voting
Code: Select all
use 0's (as was done originally)
1: 4 3 ave = 3.5
2: 5 2 ave = 3.5
3: 3 1 ave = 2
4: 2 0 ave = 1
5: 1 0 ave = .5
ignore the vote for your entries completely
1: 4 3 ave = 3.5
2: 5 2 ave = 3.5
3: 3 1 ave = 2
4: 2 - ave = 2
5: 1 - ave = 1

by "punish" I mean, that since the average of your own screenshots will increase, simply from the fact that you voted, thus hurting your own chances to winDave Toome wrote:The second half of your final table looks far more reasonable to me,
ie "you can't vote for yourself', I'm not sure what you mean by 'punish'.
obviously it's not all about winning
...another (3rd) way we could do that, is
- to allow entries to share same positions
- dont allow voting for your own entries as before (unless you really want to), and count N/As as 0s
does this sound better?

that's fine, the contest is not entirely a dictatorshipDave Toome wrote:I'm actually happy whichever method is used,
I wasn't critisising or trying to change the voting method,
just pointing out a potential mis-score possibility.
It's your call, choose whichever seems best/easiest to you

3rd one it is, I am gonna make appropriate changes...
everyone can vote now

I took the liberty of collecting up the full-size images into a zip file
and renaming them by category & entry number -
eg

should make it a lot quicker & easier to compare categories using any paint/viewer program
(well it did for me anyway).
The names don't contain the description or author so you'll still have to get those from the original post,
I assume contestants will recognise their own entries for the N/A vote
Also the zip doesn't contain the animation entry cos it needs to be viewed in a browser (there's only one entry anyway).

I assume my sector screenshot was rejected because of the lack of quality and grafical soundness. I was running a 17" moniter and a 6600GT back then OK!

It was 'rejected' in the sense that out of the majority of 2 voters it didn't get any good votesfiksal wrote:what was rejected?Syndrome wrote:I assume my sector screenshot was rejected because of the lack of quality and grafical soundness.
